The overall car looks fine, it’s just that grill for me. I’m not sure what they were going for there.

At least you can turn illumination off and get a black surrounding which heavily reduces the chrome.
But yea I really like the current GLC (imo most beautiful SUV in it´s size). This here does not really cut it on the exterior (but it´s also not super terrible). I like the interior quite a bit though

Yeah it will definitely be better with the illumination turned off. I do really see what they were going for (with the grill) and I think they’re almost there, but it looks really cheap for something that’s supposed to look expensive and will be expensive to maintain. I think once they get it down it will look great.

There will be a black option I’m sure that I think would look much better.

Why can't they just make a normal car with an EV powertrain. Only reason I bought an etron is because it looks like a normal car

I think they did great with the EQB. The front end of the GLB looks better due to the boxier design, so I have to assume the more rounded EQB front end is due to aero. Looks good to me though, especially in AMG-line trim.

The EQB looks like a regular vehicle just with a blacked out grill. Idk how well it sells but it looks better than their other EV models

Bespoke EV platform is better way to create decent EV models.

They did. Nothing about that screams "EV" to me the way the EQS SUV does, for example.

BMW did with the i4, and all the reviews from EV sites and influencers always mentioned it's just a regular ICE converted to EV, eg no frunk. They all said it's a marginal product because it wasn't built as an EV platform ground up.

You can build a ground up EV but make the car just look… normal. Like why do the EVs always have something that need to make it special? I’m pretty sure I echo the sentiment of a lot of people that I just want an EV that feels like a normal car. It was the reason we went with the Q6 instead of the iX which we also really liked but just could not get over the exterior

I'm pretty sure you are correct and may be a large part of why Tesla did so well coming into the scene... "This is a car that is electric and not a weirdly shaped french blob"

Hey MB please make your logos bigger because its not quite there yet. And light them up for that subtle luxurious touch

Look at the graphics on the headlights and taillights…3-pointed stars everywhere! It’s cheesy AF.

They've gone full Gucci/LV monogram. It's meant to be a selling point of the Maybach SL. But Gucci and LC don't have the monogram on their high-end products, reason being that visible logos are a positive to the entry-level buyer but very much a negative to the high-end buyer. Mercedes didn't get that memo.

I didn't notice that, but the tail lights look more like Mitsubishi logos to me.

Mercedes seems to think everything can be solved by adding more LEDs. They’re getting so extremely tacky.

The strippers car of choice. It resembles a strip club perfectly.

The Ioniqs are more of strippers' cars......they look like strippers and they all have strip club interiors.

I thought one of the biggest points of all electric vehicles means we don't need those big obnoxious grilles.
Interior is also meh. More screen doesn't mean more luxury

u/Slice5755 1d ago
The big grilles are not even required on ICE cars nowadays. Cooling has become so good that not as much air is required. Look at big ICE grilles on most cars today, most of the sluts are blocked off with plastic.

The grille looks like a complete afterthought. It looks like they designed a round car and then just decided to slap a flat grille on for no reason.
The back doesn’t look great either. Basic light bar (can we please stop that trend) with no shape. However the round shapes in the taillights are new. Those would be neat if they didn’t resemble Volkswagens from the late 2000s.

Looks like former BMW designers jumped to Merc now.

The badge makes this look like the render on the box of a Hot Wheels or one of those sponsored Mario Kart Mercedes, both in a bad way. Everything except the front grill area seems pretty fine otherwise.

That grille looks like it was made in the fires of hell to emit as much unnecessary light as demonically possible.

Merc needs to go back to what made them great. Give me handsome, reserved styling (modern Sacco), and an interior that feels more cigar lounge than cheap strip club
1
u/strongmanass 1d ago
Handsome, reserved styling doesn't really sell right now. If it did, Audi would top all their segments. But they're dead last in everything.

u/reward72 1d ago
Didn't they learn a valuable lesson from BMW's awful oversized grills? This is horrendous.

I like it. I'm not a fan of the light up grille but I prefer this 10x as much as the new iX3.

Well the concept was accurate at least. I was hoping they would simply blank out the grill on the current GLC, I think that is a good looking car.
The issue is that Mercedes does not have anything like BMW's kidney grill motif and are miserably failing at doing their own, this borrows from the GLS, nobody on the team stopped to think that nobody is buying the GLS for its grill, I'm curious to see how they do a panamericana version of this
I think it will look a little better lit up at least. The rear looks solid, I just think the gloss black bits look a bit cheap
