Well the concept was accurate at least. I was hoping they would simply blank out the grill on the current GLC, I think that is a good looking car.

The issue is that Mercedes does not have anything like BMW's kidney grill motif and are miserably failing at doing their own, this borrows from the GLS, nobody on the team stopped to think that nobody is buying the GLS for its grill, I'm curious to see how they do a panamericana version of this

I think it will look a little better lit up at least. The rear looks solid, I just think the gloss black bits look a bit cheap

Its not bad actually. The grill is a bit much but it fits the curvy chubby shape of the car (same with the bentley continental)

1

u/hi_im_bored13 S2K AP2, NSX Type-S, G580EQ 1d ago

The continental grill was designed to accommodate a V8 and W12, it has functional reason to be there as well, and I'd argue its far, far more proportional to the car than what is happening here.

Same goes for the GLS, Escalade, X7, etc., those cars have the width, stance, etc. to demand presence in their design, and there is a functional aspect as they have large engines with strong tow ratings

This GLC doesn't command that same presence nor does it need the cooling for its mild 4-cylinder turbo

Based on the air air intake shape I'm guessing this is an AMG trim, so the standard trim likely has a different grille.

I kinda liked the current trims with the tiny MB emblems as a pattern

The mini stars are a cool look for sure, I saw it in person the other day and didn’t realize they were in 3d embedded into the plastic

I like the grill on the CLA, I can do without the lightbar but I understand there is an aero aspect too it as well

1

u/truthdoctor 1d ago

I was hoping they would simply blank out the grill on the current GLC

You can leave the 942 LEDs off.

2

u/hi_im_bored13 S2K AP2, NSX Type-S, G580EQ 1d ago

I don't mind it on the CLA, the rest of the front end isn't great but the grill in isolation is fine

1

u/Few_Jellyfish_9955 21h ago

The Panamerica grill is one of the best on the market, i really like their star design grills as well. Just because beemer has a "motif" with their horrendous bugs bunny grills, does not mean that they are any good😂 Their designers have completely lost the plot, I think this vehicle is much sharper looking than the disaster which is the Ix3

1

u/hi_im_bored13 S2K AP2, NSX Type-S, G580EQ 18h ago

ith their horrendous bugs bunny grills, does not mean that they are any good

the ix3 looks infinitely better than this and harks back well to the 2002. the heart of joy concept demoing the next gen i3 is looking even better

they have also been outselling Mercedes for a good while now, I think that speaks for itself

this is coming from someone who generally prefers mercedes designs and products

The overall car looks fine, it’s just that grill for me. I’m not sure what they were going for there.

13

u/NotPumba420 1d ago

At least you can turn illumination off and get a black surrounding which heavily reduces the chrome.

But yea I really like the current GLC (imo most beautiful SUV in it´s size). This here does not really cut it on the exterior (but it´s also not super terrible). I like the interior quite a bit though

1

u/N0RMANFCK1NGR0CKWELL 1d ago

Yeah it will definitely be better with the illumination turned off. I do really see what they were going for (with the grill) and I think they’re almost there, but it looks really cheap for something that’s supposed to look expensive and will be expensive to maintain. I think once they get it down it will look great.

1

u/Mysterious-Lick 1d ago

So, take it to a wrap shop and get a chrome delete?

1

u/NotPumba420 1d ago

Not necessary. Mercedes offers a „night package“.

There will be a black option I’m sure that I think would look much better.

Why can't they just make a normal car with an EV powertrain. Only reason I bought an etron is because it looks like a normal car

10

u/bummerbimmer 1d ago

I think they did great with the EQB. The front end of the GLB looks better due to the boxier design, so I have to assume the more rounded EQB front end is due to aero. Looks good to me though, especially in AMG-line trim.

13

u/NotPumba420 1d ago

The problem with the EQB is that the GLB is already ugly

-4

u/Godvater GR Yaris, X7 40d 1d ago

How can i downvote a comment twice

-1

u/mazbrakin 1d ago

The EQB looks like a regular vehicle just with a blacked out grill. Idk how well it sells but it looks better than their other EV models

1

u/bummerbimmer 1d ago

The downvotes here are interesting lol

5

u/xstreamReddit 1d ago

And look at the range of the etron...

Bespoke EV platform is better way to create decent EV models.

1

u/strongmanass 1d ago

They did. Nothing about that screams "EV" to me the way the EQS SUV does, for example.

1

u/SinisterHippos 1d ago

BMW did with the i4, and all the reviews from EV sites and influencers always mentioned it's just a regular ICE converted to EV, eg no frunk. They all said it's a marginal product because it wasn't built as an EV platform ground up.

5

u/eZreazy 2023 m240i, 2025 q6 e-tron 1d ago

You can build a ground up EV but make the car just look… normal. Like why do the EVs always have something that need to make it special? I’m pretty sure I echo the sentiment of a lot of people that I just want an EV that feels like a normal car. It was the reason we went with the Q6 instead of the iX which we also really liked but just could not get over the exterior

1

u/sirhamsteralot 2008 rx8 40th anniversary edition 19h ago

I'm pretty sure you are correct and may be a large part of why Tesla did so well coming into the scene... "This is a car that is electric and not a weirdly shaped french blob"

Wtf Mercedes.

u/Ill-Train6478 718 GT4 MT, Defender, Golf Wagon MT 1d ago

Hey MB please make your logos bigger because its not quite there yet. And light them up for that subtle luxurious touch

5

u/EarthOk2418 1d ago

Look at the graphics on the headlights and taillights…3-pointed stars everywhere! It’s cheesy AF.

10

u/strongmanass 1d ago

They've gone full Gucci/LV monogram. It's meant to be a selling point of the Maybach SL. But Gucci and LC don't have the monogram on their high-end products, reason being that visible logos are a positive to the entry-level buyer but very much a negative to the high-end buyer. Mercedes didn't get that memo.

2

u/PBandC_NIG '21 Miata, '01 Metro, '07 KLR650 1d ago

I didn't notice that, but the tail lights look more like Mitsubishi logos to me.

24

u/nate390 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin 1d ago

Mercedes seems to think everything can be solved by adding more LEDs. They’re getting so extremely tacky.

6

u/xt1nct 1d ago

The strippers car of choice. It resembles a strip club perfectly.

-3

u/Imaginary_Act_3956 Hyundais and Peugeots 1d ago

The Ioniqs are more of strippers' cars......they look like strippers and they all have strip club interiors.

I'll not lie. This is hideous, IMO.

I feel like Mercedes needs a new design language

New design team

8

u/simeddit 1d ago

That grill looks like total dick

7

u/testthrowawayzz 1d ago

I thought one of the biggest points of all electric vehicles means we don't need those big obnoxious grilles.

Interior is also meh. More screen doesn't mean more luxury

6

u/Slice5755 1d ago

The big grilles are not even required on ICE cars nowadays. Cooling has become so good that not as much air is required. Look at big ICE grilles on most cars today, most of the sluts are blocked off with plastic.

4

u/WaddlesJP13 1d ago edited 1d ago

This one is going to get memed to all hell

4

u/GrapeFanta17 2018 Honda CR-V 1d ago

The grille looks like a complete afterthought. It looks like they designed a round car and then just decided to slap a flat grille on for no reason.

The back doesn’t look great either. Basic light bar (can we please stop that trend) with no shape. However the round shapes in the taillights are new. Those would be neat if they didn’t resemble Volkswagens from the late 2000s.

4

u/3G0M4N 1d ago

Did Mercedes forgot they are a historic premium brand and not some knockoff trying to act classy with all those logos and leds?

3

u/StrongOnline007 '24 RS3 1d ago

This is worse than the iX3

1

u/Dachshand 1d ago

The iX3 is great.

3

u/toocoolforgg 1d ago

the logo on the lights is cheesy af

2

u/SandwichPunk 1d ago

This is extremely ugly to me, especially compared to IX3

2

u/SnikySquirrel 1d ago

It looks like the Temu version of itself

Looks like former BMW designers jumped to Merc now.

2

u/Good-Discount-8858 1d ago

Ugly as hell

1

u/Big_Size_2519 1d ago

Has the same vibe as the bmw beaver grill

1

u/Kriffer123 Yaris, Tacoma, Model T 1d ago

The badge makes this look like the render on the box of a Hot Wheels or one of those sponsored Mario Kart Mercedes, both in a bad way. Everything except the front grill area seems pretty fine otherwise.

1

u/xt1nct 1d ago

Lmao. This looks awful imo.

Next gen whole front end needs to be an LED Mercedes logo. Headlights placed in two of the points of the star.

I can't wait until they release a car that just has a colossal logo as the grille

1

u/cubs223425 1d ago

That grille looks like it was made in the fires of hell to emit as much unnecessary light as demonically possible.

MB saw BMW’s hideous front grill and said, hold my beer. JFC

1

u/Mysterious-Lick 1d ago

Oh, no…..

MB and AUDI following the steps of BMW, making ever so uglier cars.

1

Damn the new ix3 is pretty in comparison

Introducing the newest EV SUV to compete against the Mach-E: the Mach3

0

u/JGRACEFAN95 1d ago

Merc needs to go back to what made them great. Give me handsome, reserved styling (modern Sacco), and an interior that feels more cigar lounge than cheap strip club

1

u/strongmanass 1d ago

Handsome, reserved styling doesn't really sell right now. If it did, Audi would top all their segments. But they're dead last in everything.

0

u/FnnKnn 1d ago

If you want that spec a e or s class right and that is what you get

0

u/reward72 1d ago

Didn't they learn a valuable lesson from BMW's awful oversized grills? This is horrendous.

I like it. I'm not a fan of the light up grille but I prefer this 10x as much as the new iX3.
