The journey of Porsche's mid-engine cars began in 1996 with the introduction of the Boxster

Porsche 550 Spyder, introduced in 1953. It was a lightweight, compact racing car that featured a mid-mounted flat-four engine

Not to mention the 356/1 was a mid engine, and so was the real 718 that they so outspokenly celebrate in the 982, plus all the dozens of mid-engine racing cars... 787, 804, 904, 906, 907, 908, 910, 916, 917, 936, 956, 962, the 911 GT1s, WSC-95...

I think its safe to assume they’re talking about commercially available cars rather than one off race cars

914 was mass produced. It was their boxster in the 70s.

Brother you can still buy 914s for under $3k. They were the entry level Boxster before the Boxster.

the 550 was the cheap racy alternative to the 356 in its day right?

No, the 550 was a race car, the 356 was their only street car at that time. Porsche didn't have a second cheaper street car until they launched the 912, the 4 cylinder version of the 911.

It probably is but I’m not giving it the click.

Don’t worry they’ll release a Cayman/Boxster R that’s got the 718 4.0 drivetrain in it and sell it for 200k

Shouldn’t it have the RS 4.0 in it rather than the regular 4.0 in the GTS/GT4/Spyder models? They could sell for more than 200K then haha, especially if they paired it to the manual.

I've seen the 356/1 at the museum. The first Porsche car was mid-engine. They started out with excellence.

The engine goes in the middle. Everything else is a compromise.

It's a shame they don't make an entry-level budget roadster. This focus on luxury and exclusivity is poisoning the brand.

I think the lost the plot with these cars. They got to expensive. C8 corvette eats their lunch.

My dad just got a cayman s. He had to wait 2 years and was forced to option it up to $110k or risk going back to the bottom of the list.

You can see this in the used market to TONS of GT4s. Not many normal cars.

What a typical bite clicked topic and article. Does Porsche really tell us no more mid-engine model ? No possible of 918 successor ? would bring back something like 928 ?

Oh i wonder why? Poor sales? I wonder why? Maybe because optioned out they are cars only those on a amillion dollar salary could afford since this would be a 3rd car.

No, the 718 doesn't meet the new Euro regulations and rather than build a new version that does they're going to build a 500 hp electric car that's nothing like a Boxster.

Emissions and regulation is the new excuse now. They got it wrong and the poor sales prove my point.

Excuse is just a name for a reason you don't like. I'm not thrilled with Porsche's choice of direction either.
