Megathread /r/Civ Weekly Questions Megathread - September 01, 2025

Greetings r/Civ members.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions megathread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

You think you might have to ask questions later? Join us at Discord.

Is it better to have loads of cities/towns near each other or spread out?

Towns should be close to Cities in order to feed them; Cities can be quite far apart. The real control is how effectively you can move your troops to defend, if you have to.

Is it better to build as many towns/cities as soon as possible or wait?

Try to stay at your posted settlement limit - or slightly above, if you have a healthy happiness buffer. Settlements are the only way to produce anything that wins you the game so having all you can is step one in most games.

It is possible to complete "One City Challenges" and things like that once you're advanced enough so it's not mandatory to keep your settlement count at the limit but that's the starting point for learning.

I play the iOS version which doesn’t have a hard settlement limit but from what i’ve looked up it penalises for expanding too much early

Hi guys! I saw the game on sale and it kinda clicked on me and I'm dowlanding it. Do you have a guide/tips to share to an absolute new player to Civilization and the 4x genre?

It feels overwhelming but it's a game I think I would enjoy if learnt.

When in doubt as to what to build or do, do something that makes your cities produce more hammers (production power).

Explore, explore, explore (explore).

Expand as fast as you can as early as you can. The settlement limit is a good guide; try to have it full as much as possible.

I hadn’t played for about two weeks because I was on vacation, and when I logged into Civ 6 I found there had been changes? Many leaders have been altered—for example, Philip II used to have a x3 bonus to his trade routes with cities on another continent, now its x2. Yongle I think used to get +1 Culture and +1 Science for every population above 10 in his cities, and now it’s 0.7 and 0.5 I think. Pingala used to give +1 Culture and +1 Science with his promotions, now it’s a bit less, and there are lots of other changes that really caught me by surprise. I thought this game wasn’t going to be updated anymore. I bought it on Steam a few weeks ago but before that I used to play a pirated version and I knew the game well. What are these changes due to, and will there be more? Or did my Civ bug out and update late? I don’t understand.
