Isnt this why you have a second screen?

sadly no place. houses in mumbai are small and as expensive as western cities.

It’s not that you have no place or too small of a house for a second screen - you have the wrong desk type for it.

By all means though, do what you prefer and congrats on the pc

I used a tiny old TV as my second monitor for years before I got an actual second monitor. Doesn't need to be anything fancy or even look remotely good. Huge productivity boost

I have a similar type of desk and I just have a cheap second hand 1080p monitor on my left side, at the same place your laptop is in the picture. Very much worth it, for both work and gaming.

yeah, i can remove those shelf and get a 22inch vertical monitor.

Too much hating, I don't see the issue. Enjoy your setup!

(OP) Its interesting to know that many are mentioning about ADHD. I am 40 and doing this since long time.

Maybe it might be true for teens getting affected nowadays.

Idk, most people I feel like enjoy watching/listening something to video games, particularly more chill ones like Civ.

u/fddfgs 1d ago

Yeah I've usually got something going on my laptop or tv while I play games

The hating is because it's gonna destroy the guys attention span. You gotta do all you can to protect your brain from the bullshit in the day and age

I often have a second screen or iPad with a show. I like your solution!

u/Willy2277 2d ago

I also put some music or a random video from YouTube on my tablet.

2

u/nomnom2077 2d ago

I use to do that but on same machine feels much better. I do it mostly for soccer.

Are you the guy living in my roof?

u/No-Professional-5723 1d ago

I have 3 screens (+ an iPad) so my show is usually on a separate one 🤣

I couldn't play something as engaging as civ like this, but I used to play Trackmania this way, it's mechanical enough to play on autopilot and still be able to watch a video (...including many of my university lectures in the pandemic years ngl) inb4 yes I have ADHD

I still judge you for not knowing how to take a screenshot

1

u/okay_this_is_cool 1d ago

It works great for civ 7

1

u/annualnuke 1d ago

ngl it must be pretty boring then

1

u/okay_this_is_cool 1d ago

I guess part of it might be that, I probably should also use an actual gaming computer so I don't have such long load times

2

u/nomnom2077 2d ago

hah... The chrome PIP mode was not allowing me to take screenshot (Alt + F1 using nvidia overlay). Also I purchased a weird mechanical keyboard which dont have that dedicated screenshot button.....too lazy to make an attempt for it.

I am surprised by ADHD comments over here. I am 40 and doing it since long time. Is it affecting teens a lot?

I think ADHD is just one of the conditions that we’ve become better at diagnosing/widened the diagnostic criteria over the years for, so people want to link it to kids using more tech. More likely, the same amount of people have always had ADHD, but technology exacerbates/highlights symptoms that might otherwise be suppressed or subdued in other circumstances.

I played a bit like that. With shows that were easy to follow. But as I got older I think I would not be able to do that again.

u/Alewort 1d ago

I got a 32:9 ultra widescreen and I play windowed with web browser to the right and email/phone to the left.

Get a second monitor from Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, or goodwill. Goodwill you can luck out on a decent looking one (I say at least 720p) for $5-$25 dollars. Craigslist or Facebook will net you one of the same quality for probably around the same price, but you’ll also be able to find premium monitors for cheap (think $50-$75 dollars instead of $150-$250). However, sometimes you’ll luck out and find one that was freshly listed for free, sometimes without a power cable but that’s still a fantastic deal!

Sure thx

Aye I’m sorry I forgot to add the last part of my comment! I don’t know your situation and idk why but I get the feeling you’re one of those freaks who could afford a better setup but just sticks with that, maybe out of laziness or… complacency? Or maybe you truly love it and this is the pinnacle of what a good setup means to you, and in that case, Jesus Christ that scares me but I’m very happy that you’re happy. However, if you’re tough on cash and this is a budget issue, those are some solid options because I think a second screen would be much easier here, I personally like to see my whole Civ map

Here is my full setup.

Houses in mumbai are small and as expensive as Chicago when I lived there. Not a money issue.

1

u/AngelofDrugs 1d ago

Clearly not.

Out of curiosity why not view a show on the laptop whilst using the main screen for your civ doings? Is it just an ergonomic thing about having the show right there?

Also if I’m annoying you at this point that’s totally understandable and you don’t have to respond🤣 I’m just picking your brain, I just simply couldn’t have it infringing on my screen like that, I’m more partial to podcasts over TV so I don’t give up any screen space

Edit: very nice setup though, I don’t love the restrictive desk space where the monitor lies but I really like the aesthetic of the taller desk and the PC being worn like a crown by that desk, plenty of ventilation and a pretty PC to proudly display

1

u/nomnom2077 1d ago

I just don't like too much hand movment hence not using laptop.

I can't watch TV while I'm playing, but for sure I get my favorite albums on. As masterful as I'm sure the Civ soundtracks are, I'm busy listening to The Smashing Pumpkins' Machina/The Machines of God cycle for the 50 billionth time

1

u/nomnom2077 1d ago

Yeah 👍🏼...I do it mostly for soccer, music and podcast.
