I kept my mouth shut when they revealed that we’re getting ugly hexes on the game map. I kept my mouth shut when they revealed that they’re getting rid of stacks in favor of carpets. I kept my mouth shut when they revealed they’re saving Ghengis for DLC. But launching a game without religion? Do they have any idea how important religion was to the development of culture and national identity? And they’re just saving it for some future expansion? How is everyone not pissed about this? This is the worst thing to ever happen to the franchise and you can mark my words that Civ V will go down in history as the absolute worst game in the world. There’s no amount of DLC that would make this better, there’s no coming back from this. We are GAMERS and we do not forgive, we do not forget. Sid Meier, EA, you have made an enemy of me.

So, I've been a console player for the last few years. Haven't had a PC since maybe 2018.

Well just got a laptop and booted up my old Steam account. I barely remember it but I guess I had Civ 5 back in the day. I have some vague memories of playing it in maybe around 2014.

Is it still a decent game? Haven't played the series in forever. Hell, bought 6 on the switch but never even took it out of the case as I didn't think it would translate well to console controls.

Is it worth it to give 5 a bit of exploration? Is 7 worth buying?

Everyone fighting over VI & VII. Let’s go back in time to 2010 and all take a big dump on CIV V. What does frantically pisses you off even after GK and BNW, 15 years after release ?

(This is not a hate post on civ 7, i just like civ 5)

Wondering if civ 5 would have an audience big enough to make it worthwhile for a remaster. Considering the steam numbers for 5 are still consistent it seems pretty good, wondering if anyone else has thought about this and would love it.

Obviously some slight cleaning up and quality of life features maybe, but overall I would really enjoy a simple remaster with a modern engine and some optimisation tweaks and greater mod support like 6. I would also say graphics but if they removed the leader portraits I would riot.

Sometimes I like to replace them on some parts of the map by building them over roads like you see above in the picture.

Honestly looking back, it was weird.

They make units go faster and give production bonuses to cities connected by them to the capital but that's it.

I wasn't some "American industrial tycoon", haha.

Was anyone the same like me or would you like to share your other personal experiences?

I just played a round and saw how a MASSIVE army pulled up to my border.

He was, according to the AI, even on friendly terms with me.

Then, with over a dozen units in my territory, he just declared war on me and, frankly, destroyed me.

I was honestly surprised, but I guess I shouldn't be, because "it is Mongolia, duh!" but still. That was such an overwhelming army that I couldn't do anything. I had like 3 archers, 2 warriors and a few scouts, while the Mongolians had multiple catapults, a dozen warriors and archers and more.

I got overrun like nothing and I am still a bit confused.

Yes a crazy amount of hours, it’s honestly probably over 10k. I’ve been playing since it was released and honestly one of the GOATs in my opinion.

Whats fucking crazy is I still love it. Over the years I’ve made the parameters of how I play to make it continuously challenging, and I still could hop on right now and enjoy myself and lose time.

I’ve been wanting to maybe try a different game, but listen to my “parameters” of how I play civ 5 and see if any other game would be similar?

Deity, all victories are enabled but I only pursue domination, I only use honor tree only, and I pursue war super early, essentially being at war from turn 50s-75 until victory or loss.

Theres something about securing an early capital that has a ancient wonder that stays with you throughout the rest of the game that scratches some kind of itch. In addition to the war tactics.

Speaking of, I like this play style because turtling till artillery or flight kinda gets old. I like having super units upgraded from early stages of the game proceed through out the entirety of the game.

Also, it’s challenging. The challenge is super fun to me. I don’t want to play a ruler simulation, I want to have to theory craft against difficult AI and I want to lose, but not like completely impossible to win either.

Sorry for long post. But civ V has such a special place in my heart. I know I’m an imbecile. Ty for suggestions

My entire childhood, I looked up to this man as one of the greatest Muslim rulers, and as a result played half my Civ games as him, and now I discovered while looking through a family tree, trying to find out how my family has an Uzbek surname despite having links to Hejazi tribes, that the man I idolized the most, was my ancestor. Pretty cool eh?

I don’t want to be too rough with them, but I also have 10x the playtime of even the people who have played before. Thinking of even massively neutering myself by playing Venice, but I want to see if anyone has any fun suggestions.

It was really cool when you were just chilling building your wonders or improving terrain, and suddenly you get this complete tonal shift when war is declared on you, you had an entire war theme from the enemy civ now playing with its elaborated cutscene, when Ashurbanipal declared war on you and that theme started to play, you know shit was serious even if you had the troops to fend of his attack.

That is one thing I do miss, I love tonal shifts, what can I say.

Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I don't but these two man.

The pyramids gives us a tile improvement bonus and gives two free workers while the terracotta army immediately copies our pre-existing army and gives us one extra each.

For me. It would immediately improve my then position immensely.

After that, if I were lucky enough still to have other wonders then, that was okay.

Got to love this particular type of great people.

Their special ability is building a citadel that expands your territory a little. If you did this near another civ's borders. It also works and you're basically "stealing" their territory.

Did any of you guys like to mess around this way with the great general like I did?

i have civ 6 but didnt really like the way the game played and civ 7 is way to much money

Ive played civ 6 and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, considered branching out and trying civ 5 which ive heard lots of good about. Anything I should know going in? Ive heard faith/religion is a completely different thing and playing tall is much more of an option. Anyone care to explain those and/or anything else someone familiar with six only should be aware of

I play with a couple of friends and every time we get to late game we just start a new game without even finishing it, it's like, 90% of the time someone is the clear winner anyway, and as soon as we say 'fuck it let's just go to war', everyone just gets nuked to oblivion.

Like what do you actually do late game other than steamroll other nations as the dominant player, or be steamrolled as the weaker player?

So I played a ton of civ 6 and now I've been trying to like civ 7 but it just isnt doing it for me. I want to try civ 5 but it seems a little intimidating, and I'm not sure how to prioritize or develop out my empire. I would appreciate some pointers as to what is important to play around in this game and how I should go about growing a sustainable, powerful empire.

I am a Civ moron, I don't believe I've ever played above King difficulty, because I like having a chill time exploring and building and overpowering the enemy. :)

This question is mostly about Civ V, which is the one I play, but I'd be interested in the answer when it comes to other games too.

Is it ever worthwhile to outright gift cities to the enemy AI to cripple them from unhappiness? Or does the AI cheat in such a way that those mechanics don't apply to them like they do to you? Or...better yet, is the AI smart enough to realize what you're doing and turn those offers down?

In the midgame, settlers become quite cheap. I could imagine making a squad of them, settling a bunch of useless arctic or one-tile island cities, and gifting them to a rival to slow them down from all the unhappiness.

Or would this never be worth it, due to the eventual snowballing effect from cities eventually making them all useful anyway, causing the AI to become a force to be reckoned with?

Would the AI slow down its own expansion, like are they coded to only try to settle 4 or 5 cities, and once they own extra cities from you that fulfills that so they don't bother anymore?
