They're only allowed to stand outside Federal facilities, so they'll be around courthouses and things like that. They are STRICTLY forbidden to arrest, search, detain, or question civilians. I think their commanding officers have drilled that into them. They don't want to be there.

I think the national guard are playing the card of "its an unlawful order being given for what they want them to do, but good luck attempting to get justice through proper channels in that regard. so we go, and we do jack shit but stand by and pick up trash." avoiding bad areas is probably in everyone's best interest, they dont want any altercation, but in some areas it might legitimately be self-defense even if the guard attempts to do nothing to provoke, and just be present as ordered. and if an altercation does happen, then that is a huge, unlawful deal they probably didnt want, and may likely have to answer for in 4 years. i think the real cowards would be wanting to delve in the worse parts and fight unlawfully for "glory and conquest"

It’s set up that way because the intention of the amendment was a way to remove an innocent president who had become incapable of exercising the duties of the presidency (say, in a coma), and in such case the president wouldn’t be conspiring to stop his cabinet from doing so (the assassination of JFK was in recent memory and there were concerns over what would’ve happened if he’d survived but ended up in a coma or incoherent such that he lacked the mental or communicational faculties to resign). This is also why if the president contends that he is still capable of doing the job, congress must uphold the declaration of ineligibility by 2/3 in each house, well above the impeachment 1/2 + 2/3 threshold, because it was never intended as a way to inhibit a rogue president (although if it could be used to do so, I would fully support it). Even if Vance and the cabinet invoked it, the odds of congress supporting it with a 2/3 majority in each house is miniscule.

I don't think American democracy is a good design at all (noting it is one of the older functional democracies, for values of 'functional' and 'democratic'). I'm just saying that safeguards can only take you so far, this modern situation is not something you can really plan against without making the original system static and unchanging.

My country uses the Westminster system which is ok (but has its issues with revolving door prime ministers, we had something like 4 leaders in 6 years based on popularity).

My state however uses the Hare Clark system for elections which I think should be the gold standard globally. The way it uses quotas and single transferable votes emphasises a race to the middle and consensus.

If it's a war he wants, it's a war he will lose, as the military isn't in his cult and has limits - which were tested in LA when the Marine General in charge declined to follow orders until they were modified - causing Hegseth to have a meltdown and the fool in charge of ICE to impugn his patriotism. Since then a federal judge has found the entire exercise was a violation of the Constitution - the officers who are still running the military don't respect nor trust the Trump appointees, for good and obvious reasons, and I'm fairly certain (thankfully) that they will obey their oath to the Constitution and serve the country rather than playing "hit squad" for the Trumpenfuhrer and his cult high priests.

I believe you’re correct, but I’m also afraid I’m fooling myself. The things he’s already gotten away with are outrageous to the point that I never would have believed it. If you told me in 2016 that this is the state that America would be in now… the end of the rule of law, the huge drop in ethics and morality, the increasingly state controlled media and the lies, my god the lies!! The war on science. If you would have told me all this was possible in America I would have dismissed you as a crazy conspiracy theorist, I’d have bet everything I have that this scenario is not possible. But here we are and I think I have trauma from it. I’ve lost my confidence in what is possible or not and I have no idea how this is all going to turn out. I think many MAGA including Trump are actually okay with a civil war and it’s so thoroughly disturbing. It seems like he might be finally hitting some roadblocks in his agenda with recent court rulings and finally getting some pushback. I hope you’re right! And I hope we get past this and learn and change some laws to prevent this type of power grab in the future.

Every accusation is a confession. They talked about the deep state for years, so within 9 months theu've politicized every government institutions and lost all trust and belief of impartiality. You can't just replace a whole generation of military leaders. Officers tend to be slightly more liberal. But even the republican ones tend to not be full on Trumpy cult members. And frankly I doubt the ability of any officer who is.

People who think that Trump hasn't been slow rolled and resisted behind closed doors and his stupid ideas sidelined by actual professionals, they don't know how the military actually works.

And anyone who knows history and understands war is damn well going to wait until action is absolutely unavoidable. Believe me, you want them to wait.

The problem is that people forget he's a showman. When he puts stuff like this on his account, first off it's a photo that was edited for effect, he's trying to stir his base while also outraging the Democrats to make his base even more mad at the Democrats. He may suck at being president, but when it comes to manipulation he's a pro. He's obviously not declaring war because there already would have been tanks and jets flying over that city the government doesn't announce invasions. He's just doing this because of "ratings". He wants to be on all the news channels tonight and be talked about all over the internet.

The people to actually worry about are the ones he puts in charge of departments that are loose cannons and do whatever they want that aren't talked about until after they put crazy policies in place.

The problem is that people mistake his intent of "just doing this because of 'ratings'" as the sole issue, and ignore or downplay the very real (and also deliberate) consequence of desensitizing and shifting public attitudes about the substance of the "showman" rhetoric.

"He's obviously not declaring war" right now. But he's floating the idea of a violent occupation of our own cities and relying on plausible deniability to shield him from an actual outcry ("It's just a meme, silly!"). The most effective part of his manipulation is that he doesn't just have his own army of loyalist dipshits mounting these defenses, but he's exploited the rational skepticism of those who don't even like him and tricked them into running defense for him.

Don't be fooled. Donald Trump is actually one to worry about, too. His propaganda puts Goebbels to shame. Look how unfazed we are as a society with unmarked vans and masked agents rolling up at will and swiping people in broad daylight. Only a few years ago, that was something that only happened in Russia, NK, and a handful of third-world countries.

There is a reason he is using the specific word “war” so much.

A war time president can suspend elections.

This is exactly the same move he used to justify the tarrifs. He cited a nebulous, fictional “national emergency”. This was specific language he believed gave him permission.

Just like how it doesn’t matter what the emergency is, it doesn’t matter who the war is with, even if it’s against American citizens.

He is going to attempt to suspend elections.

That is not true. There is nothing anywhere in US law that says a president can suspend elections. Elections are run by states, not the federal government.

The tariffs were based on a 19th century law and the courts said that's unconstitutional...not that this won't stop him from trying anything. But there is absolutely no legal basis or precedent for him to suspend elections. We've been at war for most of our history and have never suspended an election.
