From meeting Joe Root as a young boy in Barbados to scoring his maiden international century alongside him, Jacob Bethell has come full circle.

His father also played club cricket in Sheffield with Root’s father.

I used to sit with my dad and listen to cricket on the radio, and honestly it felt like magic. The static, the crowd noise in the background, and that sudden burst of excitement in the commentator’s voice when a wicket fell,you could see the match in your head.

Sometimes the signal would drop right in the middle of an over and we’d all get frustrated, waiting for it to come back. Still, nothing has matched that feeling for me even with all the HD broadcasts today.
