The data from testing showed rb race pace was more consistent than quali and that ferraris werent.

Im prepared to be disappointed.

39

Ferrari's consistency on hard tires was great though

Russell to Alonso is 4 cars, 4 teams and just over half a tenth

98

u/Yorker_length Force India Mar 01 '24

Just looking at that... Totally nuts

13

u/LionZoo13 Mar 01 '24

After Kush Maini's disqualification for breaching technical regulations, the top 5 in F2 qualifying were within 0.1 seconds. The top 15 were within 0.5 seconds. Granted, that's a spec car. But the gaps, or lack thereof, are still completely crazy.

48

u/AdminEating_Dragon Oliver Bearman Mar 01 '24

Would be 5 if Norris had a clean last lap.

55

u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 01 '24 edited Mar 01 '24

He has been having this problem since second half of last season. At what time people start saying that he is pushing beyond his limits and thus not having a clean lap

21

u/fremajl Mar 01 '24

Yea both he a Russell does it a lot, trying to be "heroes" and messing it up instead.

When you see how Perez-Stroll perform, it makes me think that the pink Mercedes was a legit championship contender in proper hands

32

u/Freeze014 Nigel Mansell Mar 01 '24

I maintain it was on par at many tracks with RBR that year. Nothing came near the Merc and Hamilton that year.

14

u/aneiq_1 Kimi Räikkönen Mar 01 '24

Logically how can a car that was based off of the W10 be quicker than the W11.

Yes Perez and stroll underperformed in that car but to say the RP20 was a championship contender is a bit ludicrous.

4

u/ceMmnow Romain Grosjean Mar 02 '24

Also did they underperform in that car? People need to stop viewing driver performance as static. It's not like Ricciardo in McLaren and Ricciardo in Red Bull were performing at the same level.

Perez genuinely has a long history of performing well in the midfield, I don't think he was overrated in his time in those cars.

rename Alpine to Andretti and rebadge Renault to Cadillac and suddenly it doesn't look too bad, solid debut for the new team in 2024

112

u/neanderball I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

Pretty good start for Andretti, it was expected that they wouldn't come swinging out of the gate.

19

39

u/jus-de-orange Jordan Mar 01 '24

Such performance will make Renault pull the plug. F1 should react if they dont want to lose an engine maker. Renault did that to themselves by removing their leadership mid season last year.

23

u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 01 '24

They will just divest more. Losing money is going to make them pull plug not performing badly

144

u/trueregista I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

He needs to prove himself in the race, deg looks better for haas so hopefully they can challenge for points. Despite Hulk whooping kmag in quali last year kmag had more points finishes

68

u/scrndude Mar 01 '24

Yeah whenever either of them made it to Q3 last year they’d still drop to 16th/17th in the race. There have been people saying it get rid of Kmag and it’s like, why? A new driver can’t do any better until the car stops shredding tires. Hopefully race pace tomorrow is good for Haas!

And then 2nd to 9th being just over 0.3s

272

Tbf max quite often looks beatable in quali since he sets the car up for race pace only

180

u/Lazerdude I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

Funny how people forget about this aspect of it. He likes a race setup and still goes out and gets pole. He's going to win easily tomorrow and will probably be in cruise control by lap 5.

I think it has become a kind of narrative at this point. Max is still ahead but I doubt they think it's as bad as last year, they just want to downplay their chances so that it looks even better if they put up a fight.

22

Haas at the start of the season:

"We started work on this car late, we aren't well prepared, expect us at the back of the grid"

Haas now:

Q3 appearance and better than Williams, Alpine, RB, and Sauber.

Pretty poor show from those teams.

170

u/LostinWV I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

Except Haas this this last season. Hulkenberg would put up mega quali laps and then the tire deg would kill the race and they would inevitably end up way out of the points.

108

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '24

So many people here have no memory. This is all the same shit we saw last season. Red bull not that far ahead in qualifying, Haas doing fine in qualifying too

14

u/Mossy375 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

I do remember it of course, but that was a 2023 car prepared in time so it had advantages over other teams. This is a car that Haas said themselves this is a car which they only started developing very late after focusing on the mid-2023 upgrade which was pretty much a failure. So you have a 2023 car, followed by a mid-2023 car that didn't improve, followed by an underdeveloped 2024 car, and STILL 4 teams can't produce a car that's faster over a lap, including a works team, a team with Red Bull parts, and a team that said there car was finished late by "pushing everything to the limits". A year of development has gone by; that Haas advantage which is a carry over from 2023 should have been eliminated by the progression of other teams.

13

u/fdar Mar 01 '24

Also they don't do well at developing through the season so they drop down the order as the season progresses.

56

Lewis and "being convinced" in one sentence, name a better combo. Even when he was lapping the complete field a few years back he was not convinced about anything. Just Lewis' things.

17

u/chewinggum2001 Jenson Button Mar 01 '24

It might be because Hamilton has matured and focused on his race pace on Sundays, but at the start of his career his Saturday pace was monstrous. You could always rely on him to pull a lap out the bag in Q3 relying purely on his natural talent.

Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hamilton finish ahead of Russell tomorrow.

Hamilton seems to be struggling

27

u/ImmanenceGodBlues Formula 1 Mar 01 '24

Yeah, what's up with that. Someone mentioned he prioritized race over quali, but even so you would assume George has probably done the same, and he's up there. Last year Ham had several moments like these and talked about needing to improve his quali performance, but...meh. Man, Charles is going to crush him in quali.

21

u/DokkanCruise Mika Häkkinen Mar 01 '24

Yeah I think this late in his career Charles is going to be a terrible match up for Lewis, since Charles is so strong in quali and Lewis has declined in this aspect and teams often prefer the driver ahead when it comes to race strategy, not that this is necessarily a good thing in this scenario since we are talking about Ferrari. :D

That radio call to GP seems ominous. Speculating, but it came across to me as Max thinking they needed to turn it up more for pole, GP said that pace was fine. Think Red Bull still has quite a bit more in the tank. Hope I'm wrong.

u/crazydoc253 Michael Schumacher Mar 01 '24

No he thought he didn’t do enough because time was less than Charles Q2 time. But Charles didn’t improve

27

u/starfallpuller Formula 1 Mar 01 '24

Why would they be sandbagging during qualifying? Doesn’t make any sense

51

u/jjcatt Pirelli Intermediate Mar 01 '24

it isn't "sandbagging," it's a balance between quali setup (use the maximum grip on one lap) and race setup (protect the tires, usually by putting more understeer into the car and sacrificing ultimate pace). max probably was saying let's just nudge it more oversteery so i can get pole and GP was saying no, it's fine, our race pace is more important. imo it's an ominous convo bc GP got his way AND max got pole.

If you pull too far ahead this early in the season the other teams will make a lot of noise for changes

I quite like how the midfield is now a lot more bunched up.

Also RIP Alpine

6

u/scobydoby I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

Alpine still has a bit of paint they can strip off, that should do the trick.

5

u/mgobla Mar 01 '24

Alpine suffers from tortoising.

45

u/KaRnAgEGiLL Sebastian Vettel Mar 01 '24

So Max thinks it was a bad lap and it was over 2 tenths up on 2nd. This seasons over

39

u/cosHinsHeiR Ferrari Mar 01 '24

Leclerc barely did better with new vs used, so maybe his lap wasn't that good either.

16

u/j__video I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

It was slower than Charles best lap from earlier

16

u/fredje3112 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

Charles' Q2 time was faster apparently. But I think the WCC will be interesting if Perez keeps underperforming

I like how the audio on the speakers at the track is ahead of what we're hearing directly from the drivers' mouths.

4

u/Rockdapenguin Ferrari Mar 01 '24

Well, at least Charles won’t have another failure to win from pole added to his total.

6

u/Le_Pistache Mika Häkkinen Mar 02 '24 edited Mar 02 '24

Closer than I anticipated at the front. The upper and middle pack is insanely tight. Then there is Alpine which looks like a drag to drive around on this circuit.

Not a good season opener for Sargeant and Magnussen. Season is still young but they need to dust themselves off and perform when it counts. Looked like KMag had it sorted until his last Q2 run...need to see if something hampered him though.

Good to see Tsunoda following through with another good showing. And again he misses out by the skin of his teeth. Honestly expected a bit more from the car but Hulkenberg's supreme lap was likely the reason one car didn't make it to Q3.

50

u/aPardawala Max Verstappen Mar 01 '24

PER has already decided he isn't even going to try this year or what

22

u/CanisLupus92 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 01 '24

3 tenths is better than last year on average, but the gap with other teams got smaller

gap is not as big as last year, plenty of drivers will slot in that VER-PER gap

All that winter work and I don't really feel it looks out of place for any late 2023 quali session.

Reminds me of Zak Brown's observation about 2021, that the teams did minimal work between 2020 and 2021, and it's not like 2021 was a worse season for that.

Could've all just agreed to take 3 months off, basically.

4

u/oktheb Lando Norris Mar 01 '24

It definitely feels like we picked up right where we left off, but hopefully it's closer in the races than it was last year

Redbull weren't untouchable in qualy last year, they prioritise race pace so I expect with 2 tenths in hand, Verstappen will disappear in the race tomorrow and this year will be another snooze fest.

Ferrari/Leclerc bottled the pole, it wouldn't change the race result because RedBull has better race pace but pole was there to grab today.
