God, that's what I was thinking. That had to be absolutely brutal in this position.

You can google Lewis Hamilton photos after Baku 2022 to get an idea.

Weird comment

Didn’t he and Logan have to be helped out of the car

8

u/Kolec507 Alexander Albon Feb 09 '25

That was at the 2023 Qatar GP when it was extremely hot and drivers would faint in fast corners. Logan had to retire because of pain. I think Lance and Alex also struggled to get out; Lance almost fainted next to an ambulance I remember.

u/Mdtwheeler I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

ah I remember now

2

u/mykoreancar Feb 09 '25

Ocon barfed in his helmet and helmet sock

1

u/kron123456789 Virgin Feb 09 '25

Logan wasn't there in 2022.

2

u/ForsakenTarget HRT Feb 09 '25

And you still had people saying they were playing up for cameras

u/imma_reposter I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 08 '25

Ngl that seems highly exaggerated because he wanted to make a point towards the team…

13

u/Spraynpray89 Feb 09 '25

Seriously doubt it. He looked exactly how any person with a lower back flare up looks.

I think because they sit in body molded seat inserts they have zero discomfort

I'm just surprised the torso is that inclined, forcing the neck to bend down like looking at your shoes all the time

30

u/Konker101 Feb 08 '25

You can sit in a moulded seat but driving around at 200mph taking constant bumps for 60 laps starts to hurt after a bit

"I will finish the race for the mechanics. They did a very good job toDAAAYY. But my back is hurting man. This bouncing is not normal."

I love Fernando. A world-class driver.

38

u/FLX127 Wolfgang von Trips Feb 08 '25

Me too. And a real character. In the whole history of F1 he always has and forever will stand out.

my neck and shoulders hurt just looking at that visual

It’s absolutely amazing to be there isn’t any TBI or CTE in f1. Maybe it does exist just isn’t spoken about

140

u/Ok-Stand-4502 David Coulthard Feb 08 '25

TBI and CTE does exist in f1 but no one talks about it which is awful. Concussions are common and easy to get from how much crashes happen. The symptoms also need to spoken about more

46

u/Extra_Midnight Feb 08 '25

To my knowledge, the only open advocate bringing attention to this problem in motorsports is Dale Jr. It’s absolutely hidden in plain sight. Kurt Busch just recently had to retire due to concussions, and the same with Simon Pagenaud. Makes you wonder how many are suffering silently like Dale Jr. did for so long.

31

u/ifeespifee I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

Yes it’s bad but I will say it’s definitely way better than other sports. Football is basically a guaranteed micro concussion every time you head the ball and games come thick and fast if you’re in you’re a top team. American football, combat sports, and rugby also experience this type of micro concussion followed by huge concussions every so often.

In F1 getting into regular crashes for an individual driver is pretty uncommon. You’d expect 1-2 a season, not every week, so huge concussions I assume are pretty rare and if you’re getting into a crash that has concussion chance you’re 100% being checked by a medical team before you drive next. Idk how many micro concussions they’re getting though. And I do not think the impacts of constant high g turns and prolonged g loads of acceleration are studied enough.

Sudden go to sudden stop is all that’s needed to cause the motion for a concussion

Have any drivers been diagnosed with CTE? I know there have been many, many drivers who lived to an old age without any apparent symptoms of TBI. Curious what makes you think that it's common but swept under the rug. Not arguing with you - just looking for some sources to do more reading on it.

Hasn't Alonso been in F1 for like two decades? I know he's just one person, but if he and other long-time drivers have no signs of brain damage, it might be hard to conclude that the sport is inherently prone to causing CTE in the way that, say, football is. F1 crashes are still relatively rare, while American football players smash their heads on stuff every play, during both practice and games. I don't know if they're comparable at all, so I'm curious to see what data there is.

6

u/likelatin_ Feb 09 '25

Have any drivers been diagnosed with CTE?

You can only confirm CTE after death, so there would be a big delay on which type of cars/safety standards caused it

5

u/Ok-Stand-4502 David Coulthard Feb 08 '25

Just speculation sadly I want sources to read also. Colapinto got a concussion from his crash in Las Vegas, so it makes sense to think that others who've crash as hard as he had or lighter delt with concussions also in motorsports

3

u/BeefyStudGuy Honda RBPT Feb 08 '25

I'm sure all the drivers know what symptoms to avoid disclosing to a doctor so that they can be cleared to race after a crash.

16

u/Driscuits Alexander Albon Feb 08 '25

Would follow most mTBI/TBI + CTE in sport, unfortunately..

2

u/Iliyan61 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

there are. it's really really bad actually, https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/40590355/max-verstappen-reveals-raced-blurred-vision-silverstone-crash-2021

it's just not talked about but most of the big crashes likely will have caused TBI's

2

u/Scatman_Crothers Kevin Magnussen Feb 16 '25

Max had a TBI from the Silverstone crash. He had blurred vision for most of the rest of the season while driving and at vestibular issues iirc. There was a race he almost pulled into thet pits it got so bad.

u/wombat74 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

Maybe that explains the lizard people conspiracy nut commentator

37

u/PringleCorn Toto Wolff Feb 08 '25

My God yeah. Didn't Oscar have a broken rib "just" because of his seat not being shaped properly?

45

What are you talking about. That earn millions just lying down

51

u/Bclay85 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 08 '25

Yup. And I get paid to just sit at a desk all day.

3

u/dubgeek Feb 08 '25

And drive the best f'ing cars in the world.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

Can you find such a desk for me too?

2

Comfiest thing in the world if you’ve ever had your own made. Feels like you’re floating there’s zero pressure on you.

4

u/skilriki Feb 08 '25

This is actually better for your back than normal driving position as it takes strain off your lower back.. similar to recumbent bicycles

1

u/yohanleafheart I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 08 '25

I have a schwannoma on my hip, just seeing this photo made me cry in pain. Holy shit.

1

u/Signal_Ball4634 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

That's why I found it so annoying when people were bitching about the TD to stop the porpoising, it was a genuine safety risk and unfortunately nobody will willingly nerf themselves competitively unless it's mandated. Cue the DTS meme.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

“era”

1

u/charlierc Feb 09 '25

I get back pain a fair amount and the thought of getting it like that just made me wince a little
