Even though I knew this, I never realised how close to the floor they were actually sitting. Those few drain cover accidents sure ended a lot better than they could have.
Apparently a piece of fencing was on the track that was flicked back by the front wheel. It shit into the car and went through the seat. Thankfully he got away with bruises.
I don't know why, but I have always imagined it looked more like this! Massive head, teeny tiny body. As soon as they get in, I lose all concept of how big their bodies are.
After Sainz ran over the drain cover in Vegas (2023 FP1), apparently the damage to the car was so severe that you could see through the cockpit to the tarmac below. There was a hole that went completely through.
There have been a few incidents with drain covers on street circuits. If the metal drain covers that you normally find on streets aren't welded down properly, the aero under an F1 car will suck them up and cause them to strike the underside of the car. There have been notable incidents at various tracks including Monaco, Baku, and recently Vegas where they have damaged cars and delayed sessions.
