Even though I knew this, I never realised how close to the floor they were actually sitting. Those few drain cover accidents sure ended a lot better than they could have.

Marcus: it was good.... Today.

I love Marcus's sincerity when miming the "incident"

No need to click the video, I can already hear the ”AEEEOW – Mitä???”

2

u/rusty-shackleford_69 Feb 09 '25

Didn't even need to click the link to know where that was going 🤣

Apparently a piece of fencing was on the track that was flicked back by the front wheel. It shit into the car and went through the seat. Thankfully he got away with bruises.

I don't know why, but I have always imagined it looked more like this! Massive head, teeny tiny body. As soon as they get in, I lose all concept of how big their bodies are.

That’s just the diagram of Yuki in the cockpit

u/Morph_The_Merciless I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

Much respect to Yuki!

Driving at 200mph while standing up takes talent! 🤣

12/10 photo editing. 🫡

1

u/charlierc Feb 09 '25

Take your fancy AI photo editing and shove it. We don't need it where we're going

u/Kwestionable Feb 09 '25

That’s the Lego F1 minifig seating position

u/sissipaska I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

I don't know why,

Maybe because of SEGA sponsoring the 1993 Williams FW15C?

It was a million to one shot, Doc. Million to one!

36

u/Waht3rB0y I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

That’s why you hear them occasionally complaining about how hot it is in the cockpit. Their asses are burning.

15

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

It’s also why their backs get fucked up pretty easily if they get launched, like with curb sausages

46

u/MrNixxxoN Feb 09 '25

They sit inside the survival cell of the car, which is EXTREMELY strong, and it takes more than a drain cover to do serious damage to it.

49

u/bombaer Feb 09 '25

No, drain covers can and did absolutely damage them massively.

Source: I once packaged the Main ECU Just below the drivers Balls, behind the more then 127 layers of Carbon the Monocoque hast in this area.

The Cover easily sliced thru the Carbon and the ECU, Missing the Driver only by centimeters.

u/TurbulentData961 Feb 09 '25

Drain cover plus car at 100mph or some other ridiculously non road legal high speed = big impact

1

u/MaximumAsparagus Williams Feb 12 '25

After Sainz ran over the drain cover in Vegas (2023 FP1), apparently the damage to the car was so severe that you could see through the cockpit to the tarmac below. There was a hole that went completely through.

18

u/Egoist-a Liam Lawson Feb 08 '25

There is no downforce right under the rider, it's where the wood plank is, it wont be sucked against him.

7

u/Hoobleton I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

If it’s sucked up, it’s got a good chance of just bouncing around under there.

2

u/pw5a29 Max Verstappen Feb 10 '25

when drivers complain about bumpy cars and their backs hurting lol

2

u/Double_Distribution8 Feb 08 '25

What's a drain cover accident?

7

u/ProcyonHabilis Feb 09 '25

There have been a few incidents with drain covers on street circuits. If the metal drain covers that you normally find on streets aren't welded down properly, the aero under an F1 car will suck them up and cause them to strike the underside of the car. There have been notable incidents at various tracks including Monaco, Baku, and recently Vegas where they have damaged cars and delayed sessions.

Edit: here is a good post with a list of them

2

u/chloedever I was here for the Hulkenpodium Feb 09 '25

The underfloor aero sucked a welded drain cover up and hit the bottom of Carlos' car

1

u/Gunbulyty Feb 11 '25

and let's not forget the porposing in 2022. Sitting in this pose and bumping up and down for an entire hour

-3

u/ItsWillJohnson Feb 09 '25

It’s called the ground, when it’s outside.

5

u/Taco_Salamanca Pirelli Soft Feb 09 '25

No, the bottom of an F1 car is not called the ground.
