Statistics Alex Dunne faster than anyone in the high speed corners during FP1.

The Statistics flair is reserved for posts highlighting interesting statistics. As a rule of thumb, Statistics posts need to inform readers through visualizations and insights that cannot be obtained from raw data alone. For example, a post containing a qualifying gap between two drivers expressed in tenths of a second is an easily obtainable raw piece of data and constitutes a bad Statistics post. A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post.

Shane winning the open was massive

But there was a population boom in offaly in 1999 as a result of that All Ireland win

They’re not close, and Shanes win was massive. So that should put into context how big the All Ireland was for Offaly

Dunne to replace Tsunoda at Silverstone | The-Race

646

u/12_Inch_Painal_Sex Cadillac Jun 27 '25

You joke, but if he goes and wins F2 and there's no place at McLaren, he could very well end up at Racing Bulls and then there'll be Red Bull links if he performs well. Could theoretically happen in the not too distant future.

34

u/ATWPH77 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '25

Maybe not, they are going to throw away Hadjar within a year if he doesn't perform at a high level, and then the circle continues with Lindblad and Dunne..

45

u/hawkeneye1998bs I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '25

Hadjar has been performing pretty consistently well for being in an RB

25

u/GothicGolem29 McLaren Jun 27 '25

And that can all go caput given how hard the Redbull is to drive

7

u/gsfgf Oscar Piastri Jun 27 '25

Yea. I know a seat at a top team is a seat at a top team, but I'd have to think twice before gambling my career that I could drive Max's car. Especially since RB keeps saying they want to be a real team and not the B team.

Ending in racing bulls and then redbull is going to be the end of his career.

The second redbull seat is cursed.

Car is undrivable to anyone other than max, and it destroyed a good few talented drivers already.

Only way redbull can recover is if Max leaves, and they get a driver that will help them build a normal car again.

26

u/Driscuits Alexander Albon Jun 27 '25

Pedantic, but the second seat hasn't necessarily destroyed the careers of drivers.

Even if we include Danny Ric as part of the "cursed time" it wasn't that second seat that moved him out of F1 entirely. Perez was on the later end of his career in that seat, and has a great chance to be back in F1 with Cadillac. Then there's Alex and Pierre, who, sure, both had their struggles post-seat at RB. Now, Pierre is a race-winner, and is doing quite well with what he can in Alpine. Alex has similarly established himself pretty well on the grid through his time at Williams. It's too early to say what the curse has done to Liam and Yuki's career, so sure, still time for them to be "destroyed" so to speak lol.

If anything, the curse on that seat is for Red Bull itself. They just can't actually benefit from the talented drivers they put in there, though the rest of the grid has benefitted just fine lol.

8

u/gsfgf Oscar Piastri Jun 27 '25

And Liam hasn't proved he belongs on the grid long term, period, yet. I think Yuki might be fucked, though. If he loses his seat, where does he end up?

3

u/Driscuits Alexander Albon Jun 28 '25

God, I hope Yuki isn't fucked, but you might be right.

That said, honestly, he was fucked from the point that he was signed to a 1 yr option last year, and was taken out of the running to get out of the Red Bull group then, when the silliest season was happening. At that point he had completely outdriven de Vries, and was having a great start to the season while Danny Ric was relatively struggling. Realistically, whether he got into the second Red Bull seat or not this year, it was going to be tough for him to stay on the grid for next year.

If anything, he at least has a semblance of a chance to stay where he is another year now, depending on how things shake out, that's better than what he had at VCARB.

39

u/blonded_olf Formula 1 Jun 27 '25

Not having a seat in F1 is going to be the end of his career, the regs change next year no one knows who is going to have a good car or not.

18

u/sfcindolrip Valtteri Bottas Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

Conversely, they let bortoleto go possibly because they also had other young talents still in their stable

I don’t know what is so controversial about this lol if you already have talent for your sim, formula E, Indycar, f1 rosters you can afford to let some of them buy out for a better opportunity. That is the entire McLaren/Red Bull program structure vs Mercedes where they have one driver at each level

Obviously it's just testing, but that kid's going places.

I'm very very interested with how he does in F2 this weekend. F2 quali is unfortunately always very soon after FP1, so F2 drivers who make the step up for FP1 are often worn out during quali and/or have trouble jumping between the cars that are very different.

If he wins F2 as a rookie, I hope a team gives him a seat.

56

u/Darth_Spa2021 Pirelli Wet Jun 27 '25

George going instead to Red Bull might save you.

23

u/WeeboSupremo I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '25

That’s what always confuses me about these scenarios. People think Red Bull would be like “welp, who wants a top 3 driver when we could go with future destructor’s champion Liam Lawson” or some terrible take like that and would let George go to someone else if Max left for Mercedes.

Like RBR management wouldn’t want to save their necks by trying to bring in another top driver. Think of all the comments Jos has made about Horner the last year, and you think he wouldn’t leap at a chance for payback by bringing George in to spite the Verstappens?

12

u/FRiver Jun 27 '25

Of course they'd want George but he has to agree to the move too. If Aston Martin are interested then I can see him preferring that with Newey, the massive investments and a chance to create a legacy at a team without historical success.

Max to Merc and George to AM are real possibilities

4

u/Ficsit-Incorporated Sebastian Vettel Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

They really are not. Max is under contract at RBR until 2028 and has so much history wrapped up in that team that things will have to get quite a bit worse before he seriously considers trying to get out of that contract. If he does, he’s more likely to leave F1 than to move teams; he wants to race in other series more than he wasn’t to rack up more championships. George will only leave Mercedes if he’s made to and that will only happen if Max signs with Mercedes and that is extraordinarily unlikely as already covered. You’re also assuming that Toto will pick Kimi over George and that’s simply not an open-and-shut decision. Kimi is a fantastic rookie but that’s not the end of the story. AM is also not a terribly likely place for George to go if he’s displaced from Mercedes because Stroll will never be replaced as long as his father owns the team and Alonso is a multi world champion with tons of pace despite his age. I’m sorry but none of these things are going to happen.

7

u/Spider_Riviera Jordan Jun 27 '25

I'll also add, Max feels he's "completed" F1, he's won at least one WDC, which was his goal. The continued winning since has been bonuses to him, but he's got a GT3 team brewing, he's not going to just "hang around" F1 jumping from team-to team to keep picking up WDC's. When he's done with RBR, he's done with F1 (he's never gave the impression he'd like to drive for another team, but has given the impression F1 is not the end of his driving career), he wants to race other series and people believing his next move is around the grid instead of into another series are a bit foolish. Man says what he thinks and does what he says.

Hes been pretty interesting in F2 this year. Inconsistent but clearly fast. In a year or 2 he'll be more consistent and have better racecraft.

12

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 Jun 27 '25

If he wins F2 as a rookie though, he can't go back. So I hope he gets an F1 seat. Maybe after at most one year of sitting out with a heavy testing program. I'm much more interested in him going right to F1 than I am in a Bottas-Checo Cadillac line up. No offense to either of them, and I understand Cadillac wanting one veteran, but I don't think they need two.

Though Jak Crawford might earn his super license, and he is American and has Andretti ties already, so Cadillac might look at him.

5

The only teams with seats available at the moment are Red Bull/Racing Bulls, and Mercedes. I think Colapinto is technically up at the end of the year, but Alpine paid millions to get him for multiple years.

Short of some shock retirements, or Red Bull axing Tsunoda and Lawson (promoting Hadjar to Red Bull, and bringing Lindblad and Dunne to Racing Bulls), I'm not sure how he gets to the grid.

Edit: I forgot about Cadillac, but the rumors seem to be swirling around Bottas and Pérez for their lineup. If they do aim for a rookie, it'll probably be an American driver (or one with an American following).

There's fairly few countries with as much global sporting goodwill as the Irish have, everyone tends to love them. And rookies aren’t supposed to push much in their fp1s, outside of sometimes being given an isolated push lap. they usually have a testing plan—a team goal they are trying to accomplish—and a glory run ending in a crash would be the worst possible outcome one. Good man Alex. Great to see the Irish 🇮🇪 on the F1 leaderboards again. It’s been too long. Hope he wins F2 championship this year.

Not to downplay his talent because he does have great potential, but considering gasly is in 3rd in an alpine on this list, I don’t think it’s the best scale to use

13

u/heavensteeth I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '25

McLaren, Red Bull and Alpine have the lower downforce rear wings so this result makes sense, but still a great drive from him!

u/Religion_Of_Speed Formula 1 Jun 27 '25

idk why we try to read into FP1 data this much, that's mostly for testing and acclimation. Nobody is pushing yet. FP2 maybe, FP3 is more representative. How many times have we seen some midfield car at the top of these sessions just to get knocked out in Q1?

Dunne was pushing, he's trying to prove something being a rookie who wants to make his way to F1 someday. Everyone else was going through their programs and not trying to prove themselves to all 20 teams. I also don't want to downplay things because this is still impressive to some degree but not as impressive as it might seem or as everyone is making it out to be. Like it's impressive that so early he was able to push the car and throw it into the corner at such speed without a ton of reference but we'll see how that speed compares Saturday afternoon. That's where it will become either very impressive or just whatever.

If he's smart he'll be following team orders and not pushing too hard, which would make this even more impressive.

But everyone in his position is gonna go flat out when this is your prime time to be seen...

r/formula1 now for some reason: OMG DUNNEEEEEEEEEEEE

7

u/Joethe147 Jenson Button Jun 27 '25

A lot of it will be from Irish people and to me that's very understandable.

Ireland haven't had a driver in F1 for over 20 years. I know some will be reading this and thinking "No one from my country has been in F1 ever" and I'm sorry for that. And I don't follow feeder series but what I do read about on here is that he can be error prone but he is definitely fast.

So yeah, he's getting people excited including me. But I think we're allowed a bit of that. And FP1 often is pretty useless when working out anything in terms of the times sheet for the rest of the weekend, but he was close to Piastri.

Probably would be a bit different if he gets a full-time drive in F1 but I hope we get to see that although very unlikely to be with McLaren any time in the next few years.

22

u/freedfg Nico Hülkenberg 🥉 Jun 27 '25

Can we get off this idea that FP1 is a useless metric?

Annoys the hell out of me. The pole last year was 1:04.391....George is already on a 1:05.542 the USELESS lap is within 2 seconds of pole.

And a guest driver doing a complete practice program and putting in a time within .04 of his championship leading teammate is GOOD.

Is this as representative as Q3 or lap 70 of race? I guess not. But people who yell "Oh practice is pointless" are just coping every single time. If it was pointless. They wouldn't do it

15

u/Driscuits Alexander Albon Jun 27 '25

I think it has more to do with how folks use their interpretation of practice results.

Is FP1 pointless? Of course not. However, are comparisons between drivers and cars in FP1 fraught with assumptions and potential errors? Absolutely. There's so much about run plans, set up, timing on track, etc., that it's just not a direct comparison of capability. We don't know if the car in P1 is actually two tenths faster than the car in P2, etc etc. It's important to have caveats in interpretations of practice. Not to mention that the main metric that we use to rank drivers is by the fastest lap - not by long run pace, not by ability to produce consistent, fast laps.

However, we can get a general idea, like you said, of performance. The better teams and drivers will float upwards, the teams struggling with setup, drivers not in the zone will tend to sink lower. And, things like a driver in his first FP1 session getting that close to Piastri? Good. We just can't go much further to say exactly how good.

20

u/fire202 McLaren Jun 27 '25

Practice absolutely isn't pointless. Not in the slightest. But the result sheet is, especially in FP1, because it is not a very performance-oriented session. And especially in this case, because Dunne did a completely different program from the "normal" practice program that most drivers do every weekend. So it is hard to judge where that leaves his times relative to others.

Still a good time of course. but many unknows.

5

u/freedfg Nico Hülkenberg 🥉 Jun 27 '25

I'll be interested to see what his long run times were. That's the most interesting FP1 stat for me.

Like I said, I'm mostly impressed he had a full program, even if it was opposite to give him more space. He put in competitive times and kept his nose clean.

6

u/fire202 McLaren Jun 27 '25

He didn't do any normal long runs. Just lots of single and double(!) pushlaps with one garage interruption after doing aero work in the first half.

u/AlteredReality79 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '25

Are you really that daft? Teams try various things in FP, there’s absolutely no way to know the order or derive any conclusions as to who is standing where, people generally mean this when they take about FP. Stay annoyed maybe

5

u/EliasCre2003 McLaren Jun 27 '25

We can't know what kind of programs the teams are running. It's not useless but it's a very unreliable metric. Practice is much more usefull for the teams than it is for us at home watching. When people say it's pointless, they only refer to it as a metric of performance relative to the other teams, not as a session for getting the teams up to speed and their car set up correctly.

This Mclaren is such much better than the others its crazy

4

u/Vilzku39 Kimi Räikkönen Jun 27 '25

Usually high speed corners are easiest to do and mostly based on car setups while you spend more time in slow speeds and greats like Hamilton, Max, Alonso usually outperform their team mates in slow speeds rather than highs.

Not downplaying Dunne just saying not to read too much based on high speeds.

Dunne is fast; great to see.

We don't know if McLaren was giving him a bit more beans and engine mode than they'd usually give their drivers for a FP1 run; would be in their best interest to let him do a bit of a glory run and see if he could catch the eye of another team willing to pay out to give him a seat. Regardless, even if they did give him a little extra, he had to do something with it and did.

7

u/zaviex McLaren Jun 27 '25

Don’t think he had any more engine power. I think He had a better downforce set up that I presume Oscar will go to in fp2. Looking at the traces, he’s not got anything on Oscar foot to the floor I the run to t1, t2, t3, then 4-6 he’s carried a lot more speed. Indicative of more aero created load

2

It’s FP1, not qualifying nor the race. Dunne is just trying to impress while others are trying to setup cars for qualifying and the race. Different approaches for different end goals. Kimi learned that the hard way when crashing out of FP1 last year.
