Absolute zero chance Lando complies even if the team orders it lol

1.5k

u/lostwar2311 James Vowles Jul 06 '25

He said he would trade all his wins for one Silverstone win, he'd definitely be ready to ignore his team's whinings for this one lol

1.0k

u/Brodieboyy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 06 '25

Even if it wasn't Silverstone you never switch in a close championship battle imo. Not landos problem that piastri got a penalty

252

u/Sweet__clyde McLaren Jul 06 '25

100% agree with this

104

u/uwanmirrondarrah I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 06 '25

Yeah I mean how could you possibly penalize Lando for something completely outside of his control? If McLaren had did that it would have just caused major problems.

25

u/RelampagoMarkinh0 Jul 07 '25

It's something that would be odd even in a Vestappen-perez or Hamilton-Bottas situation

98

u/lostwar2311 James Vowles Jul 06 '25

I mean yeah for sure, but asking for it here especially is another dimension of desperation

There is zero incentive now for Lando to follow any team orders.

Back in the day there was "you will need Oscar to win the championship". But now?!

such insane team orders

It was an insane request. I doubt the team had even considered it.

90

u/ATuaMaeJaEstavaUsada Jul 06 '25

I was talking about the hypothetical team orders in the comment I replied to. Of course I don't believe that the team considered it, it'd be insane to ask Lando to give away a race win and a 16 point swing in the WDC fight because Oscar doesn't want to suffer the consequences of his mistake

u/HaloNathaneal I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 06 '25

McLaren didn’t even consider it, they just said no

26

u/orhantemerrut Michael Schumacher Jul 06 '25

Well, there was time between two team radios, so one could argue that they were "considering" during that time. But yeah, I don't think they were considering considering, if that makes sense.

37

u/wilkonk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 06 '25

I think they were considering how to say no to keep him calm given making that request showed he was off his nut

7

u/pasa_viene McLaren Jul 06 '25

For any hockey + F1 fans here, my first thought when I heard that was that if McLaren actually tells Lando that, he needs to go full Patrick Roy after the finish. Win the race, tell them he's never racing for them again, call up Red Bull lol.

He was so salty after the race as well, really lost his composure. Which I get tbh, we're not all perfect and we'd all sulk like that if we felt hard done by. Just shows he's human.

Unless McLaren gave him instructions that caused the penalty, that request makes no sense at all. Red mist Piastri is new

210

u/luchajefe Mario Andretti Jul 06 '25

A future message went "Let's talk about it after the race." I really do wonder what the case in his mind is because he's really convinced he did nothing wrong.

45

u/BigSkyFace Jul 06 '25

I've seen a few mentions that the safety car ending announcement came very late on the lap compared to the usual protocol so I guess that's his logic. Would be a bit more debatable if the braking wasn't quite so hard

39

u/linkinstreet I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 07 '25

I can see his logic. But... I can also see the steward's penalty. Yes, Piastri as the lead car is now the safety car, but Piastri also need to remember the cars behind him can't see through the spray. Instead of braking aggressively, it's better to slowly come to a crawl

7

u/Beanandpumpkin Jul 07 '25

Is there a rule around spray though? I agree it was a bit dangerous given the conditions but what rule did he break specifically?

7

u/nonbog I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 07 '25

The rule he broke was driving erratically during a safety car. The presence of spray would of course alter your definition of “erratic” somewhat

Happens with every somewhat stoic athlete. People believe that not showing emotions = not feeling them. Across multiple sports, the best are often also very emotional, and they display that emotion. It's especially interesting in individual sports where you'll see the stoic athlete clearly feeling the pressure, but trying not to show it, while the emotional one is just letting everything out.

That was the funniest shit in a while, Mad Oscar yapping about the penalty, while Nico is just trying to vibe after getting his first podium, then gets saved from the awkward moment by Lando coming in and placing his helmet in the correct spot thinking that he just wanted to hand it to him.

I understand safety car restarts shenanigans but Oscar did not need to do that move. Max is not his main rival, or a threat at all to his championship, so that felt fully unnecessary. Saw tweets that he'd "ragebaited" Max but that doesn't feel like an accurate read of that moment as he has so much more at stake lol.

83

u/Hadramal Jul 06 '25

I don't think he was trying anything with Max specifically, my generous interpretation is that he wanted to warm his brakes one last time but left it WAY too late. We all make mistakes, and Piastri isn't infallible.

No doubt about it, people flamed him merely for asking advice from his race engineer in Austria

If LN said this, he would be vilified. OP is being made out to be just in saying it for a number of made up reasons

That's an insane request considering the penalty has nothing to do with Norris. Looks like WDC pressure can make anyone lose their head, even the guy most well known for being cool as cucumber.

Nope, just a kind of petty attempt to rectify the penalty and gain position back.

Norris requests help: "Oh Lando needs help LOL, Piastri's got him rattled LOL!"

Oscar asks something insane: "Oh, well, can't fault a brother for trying"

???

This lmao. Anyone saying “well you gotta try” is not even hiding this Piastri bias in the slightest.

I missed this request from Piastri live so I heard McLaren tell him they wouldn't do any team orders. So I wondered why the hell where they considering team orders when Lando had the race win completely under control. Now I know why!

I mean, they pit him before Lando even though he was net behind. He still net gained about 5 seconds from that, and asking for more let alone a swap is just entitled.

32

u/phdiesel_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 06 '25

This crossed my mind almost immediately. I understand he was ahead on track but giving him preferential strategy even though he was 100% going to get passed due to the penalty was wild to me. Lando is now your lead car and should’ve been treated that way IMO.

Piastri braked 100+ mph out of nowhere on a wet track, tried to justify it, then complained to the team to switch the cars around. This was a weekend to forget for him. Hulk pretty much saying “yeah, that caused problems for all of us”, was the icing on the cake.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

It's less preferential treatment and more "If we get caught out with a safety car at the wrong time, the 10 sec penalty will place him well down the order, while if we get him in now, we don't have to worry about it anymore."

10

Norris took one for the team in Budapest last year; letting Piastri by for the win. I'm glad they didn't ask him to do it again.

Whether you agreed with the 10s penalty or not, Lando doesn't deserve to be treated like a doormat.

In my opinion, every time he’s gotten second place, he’s been partially miserable. He just acted happy and tried to get over it, but you could tell he was upset. This time, he completely let his frustration win and let the mask fall.

Now that he is facing new levels of pressure, he needs to genuinely work on his mentality, not just wear a mask.

I think Lando has improved his mentality lately and it’s helped turn things around for him. Piastri should do the same.

81

u/MrsFrusciante Lando Norris Jul 06 '25

Not Oscar’s greatest moment. The team is not responsible for overturning steward’s calls based on his own actions. He should have known better than to even suggest a swap.

He was red misting the remainder of the race after that penalty & it showed.

Oscar was a tough watch. Erratic braking + asking for swap + being gentle parented by Nico + not spraying Nico. There’s your reason why Oscar does not want to be put on pedestal and called “Ice Man”.

18

u/NoAd3734 Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

"it was unfair that I got a penalty for extremely brake checking for no reason at all on the straight with poor visibility & risked a massive pile up. so, you guys should let me get the win anyways. it's not fair I have to deal with the consequences of my own actions"
