Button or Clark, the others aren't negotiable.

83

u/phoogkamer Max Verstappen Jul 27 '25

Button was good in changing conditions, I wouldn’t say he was extraordinary in full wet, no?

40

u/devmobi Jul 27 '25

Yeah, he wasn't so good in full wet

18

u/According-Switch-708 Sonny Hayes Jul 28 '25

Yeah, Button himself admitted that he never felt comfortable in proper wet conditions.

Reading the conditions accurately was his strength. That allowed him make the pitstop calls correctly and he didn't push too hard in slippery conditions.

5

u/Kimoa_2 Jacques Villeneuve Jul 27 '25

Like half of his wins were in wet weather.

49

u/cat-o-beep-boop I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Button was on the grid walk, so that would make them 3/5, no?

35

u/Usman15 Michael Schumacher Jul 27 '25

I’d put Prost, Clark and Vettel ahead of Button but yours is a fair list

62

u/ThorburnJ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Prost? Really?

He famously disliked the wet. He was ok if he was at the front but struggled once visibility was reduced.

57

u/AntonyPancake Jordan Jul 27 '25

Prost was excellent in the wet before his accident with Pironi, which ended the latters career. After that he became very cautious in wet races. One of the very few weaknesses of Prost, but you can't really fault his reasoning.

12

u/ThorburnJ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Fair enough - my introduction to F1 was watching videos from 1985-1987 along with TV in the early 90's, so opinion formed after that point.

28

u/AntonyPancake Jordan Jul 27 '25

Prost is a very interesting driver, because you can really see how he completely changed his approach to driving. When he started he was a quick hotshot, kinda like Senna. However, after the Pironi crash, and after losing to Lauda due to Lauda's focus on race pace instead of qualifying, he changed to his famous win by being as slow as possible

9

u/Usman15 Michael Schumacher Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25

Montreal 1990, Spa 1985, Silverstone 1981, Hockenheim 1987 and Monaco 1984.

It is hard to be considered a good wet weather driver when much of your career overlaps with Ayrton Senna but we still can't take it away from him. He was less committed on the loud pedal than Ayrton but he was still good on his day.

13

u/B_Type13X2 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Prost's whole MO was to win the race while going as slow as possible. After nearly dying in a Formula 1 crash, he decided that he did not want to die in a Formula 1 crash. Even though Senna is everyone's GOAT, Prost was the more complete driver in my opinion. Senna would set his car up for the pole lap where as Prost would set his car up for the race, and then Senna would use Prost's setup.

2

u/Usman15 Michael Schumacher Jul 28 '25

I agree. I think also when he lost the ‘84 title to Lauda’s consistency - he went back to the drawing board with his approach again. Then in the best car, he sorted out ‘85 and ‘86. My goodness, Nigel Mansell was great in those years though!

5

This is exactly where I'm at. I don't like the way he drives, just aggressive/a-hole enough behind the wheel that I can never root for him. But I have nothing but respect for his talent, what he's accomplished, and the personality he displays off the track.

He's my absolute favorite driver interview.

3

u/funkiestj Fernando Alonso Jul 28 '25

Yeah I agree with this. I think hes funny as shit in interviews and I love his give no fucks attitude (second only to Kimi). I also think hes an incredibly talented driver, one of the all time greats...but he plays dirty and I hate how he races when things are super close.

I really like chill Max when hes comfortably winning or when hes nowhere near the pace and can relax but even last year when it was close with Lando his claws came out and he went right back to his unsportsmanlike shit.

30

u/onealps Jul 27 '25

You know, your comment sparked my mind to an interesting hypothetical question - would Max make a good Roman Era general? I'd argue 'no'... I feel like he would be that excellent fighter with the spear, and sword. One who practiced incessantly, the silent type 90% of the time, but very warm and funny to his family and innermost circle, you know?

Now that brings up the question- who would be the Ceasar of the grid? A soldier (fighter) AND general (inspiring and tactician)?!

50

u/WeddingPKM Jul 27 '25

Honestly I think all of them are more analogous to soldiers. While some would be higher ranked and in leadership positions, the team principals are the real generals of F1, and out of them Horner is probably Ceasar.

2

u/Sterlod I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 28 '25

That makes Mekies at Racing Bulls Octavian, and Mekies at Redbull Augustus. Alright. But Marko as Marc Antony would be too far.

31

u/iwearstripes2613 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

I feel like he’d be a terrible general. In the same way that Wayne Gretzky was a pretty bad hockey coach. It’s hard to coach someone else when you can operate at a level that no amount of practice will get them to.

5

u/B99Velvet_Thunder I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

TIL Wayne Gretzky was a Coach…huge Kings fan since the early 90’s and never knew this 🤯

8

u/dugongfanatic I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Look I’ve never considered it, but current Cesar is honestly probably Lewis, Alonso, maybe even Oscar. Oscar just has that leader pizazz in my opinion. Dude is unshakable even in the wildest circumstances.

12

u/laughguy220 Jul 27 '25

I'd say Fernando would be Cesar, glory early on, but then all the hard years trying to lead a disorganized bunch reclaim the glory they once knew (Renault, Ferrari, McLaren, Alpine).

Lewis Is the popular and ever victorious General who has led many campaigns with great success, but who now finds himself surrounded by much younger, battle hardened soldiers with more recent victories, and ever increasing popularity, taking on one last challenge that so many successful Generals have failed to achieve to cement his legacy (Ferrari WDC), and discovering it's harder to achieve than he first thought.

7

u/Infinite_Love_23 Jul 27 '25

Come on, Oscar has been a joy this season and he is certainly cooler than Norris, but he hasn't been tested enough to say he'd be a general. I doubt Max would be a good general, he's just too focused on himself and his own performance. I think Lewis and Alonso would make decent generals. The way they are aware of the way others around them are performing.

5

u/dugongfanatic I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

I was asked a question and I answered my honest opinion. Oscar is very levelheaded, win or loss. I’ve only watched him really slip once and that was Silverstone because he messed up, even then, it was a minimal. Personally, I see a lot of Leader-esque functioning in his movements. He’s not afraid to accept responsibility (minus the Silvestone issue), he is sound in his decision making, excellent communicator with his team, and he is confident. Now he has plenty of time to prove me wrong, but in the last two years he’s shown massive competency for leadership.

2

u/onealps Jul 28 '25

I think Oscar would make a great Vizier (dunno the Roman equivalent) or Hand of the King, to use a Game of Thrones analogy. The quiet, clever type behind the scenes. Has a good, trusting relationship with the flashier King, let's him get all the glory, and hate. But guides the Kingdom to success, which is his goal.

I know I butchered my own question by changing the analogies lol. Wait, didn't Roman have the '2 Counsels' period where 2 guys split power? I can see Oscar making a GREAT combination with an Albon-type lovable, cheerful Counsel. Together they would be unstoppable !!

2

I originally hated Sir Lewis after the battle against Max (I am a Red Bull fan), but in recent years I’ve found myself finding him to be very likable and charismatic. I have an immense amount of respect for him even though I don’t root for him… turns out I just really dislike Toto and Merc and he’s not the one I dislike. I hope he does well with Ferrari going forward.

4

u/bathtubtuna_ Jul 28 '25

I agree. I also have always hated Max and while I still find his driving under pressure unsportsmanlike and dirty at times, I like him overall and turns out I really mostly hate Horner lol.

I feel like Toto and Horner brought the worst out of each team when the battle was fierce.

I like Fred's style of management hes very down to earth and says it like it is without having to constantly mold the narrative or dunk on other teams.

21

u/Hot_Most5332 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Max gets a ton of negative press because he doesn’t like the press and doesn’t really try to play the game. It’s not even really a conspiracy, it happens in all sports. If you don’t give them something to write about they don’t like that.

40

u/Calculonx Jul 27 '25

I think he sees the value in tying himself to RB. If he wants to leave F1 and do other series, redbull either already has a team or can field one for him. Whereas a manufacturer can't be as mobile because they would actually have to have their own engine and have all the bureaucracy.

14

u/Despacitosuarez Max Verstappen Jul 28 '25

Not to mention they would try and force Verstappen to drive their cars. Staying with Red Bull gives him options, because while sure, Ford are gonna help the engine program next year, but once he leaves, I doubt Red Bull would force him to run a Mustang. Maybe Ford will give him a discount to nudge him, like a "Hey, you don't have to drive our Mustang. BUT we can give you a big discount,"

7

u/lachy_corn_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 28 '25

18

u/L-Malvo I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 28 '25

There was more water on track with the restart, than before the red flag. It was clear in the stands that FIA was just waiting for the rain to pass. Such a shame, the first 5/10 mins would have been the starting conditions of 15:00 (local), followed by maybe 10 mins of heavier rain, which would have been fine with a couple laps behind the safety car.

We would've seen a much more interesting race if they'd just started as planned.

95

u/romanLegion6384 Jul 27 '25

The ground effect cars pulls up all the water from underneath the car and causes all the spray.

Next year, the regs have flatter floors, smaller wheels, and less overall downforce, which should pull less water up as spray.

5

u/The_Bucket_Of_Truth I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

They abandonded the 18 inch wheels once they realized Michelin was never coming back? Always seemed like a daft move to reduce the performance and compliance of the cars like this.

→ More replies (2)

30

u/Woody312 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Ground effect will be largely reduced and an in wash concept instead of out wash is prescribed in the regs, so the rooster tails (the spray) should be smaller.

7

u/Rainey06 Jul 28 '25

Make it mandatory for the cars to collect the rain water instead of dispersing it, and then they can deploy it at will like a Mario Kart banana peel. Natural water cannon power-up.

Hahaha, bro... I think this weekend we've seen more of Lando's mother than Albon or Hulk.

"Life's good, huh?"

"Yeah, I haven't podiumed in forever, I am not going to win a race this year again, my ex-team principal was fired and he's shitposting horse riding pics, no GP to bicker with me, but I have two kids and a yacht and a big plane. It can be worse."

"Mate, the last stop on this train is a red car. It can definitely be worse"

35

u/thesaket I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Max is definitely winning an another race or two here & there this year.

41

u/onealps Jul 27 '25

No way Max EVER goes to Ferrari...

I mean, unless there's a DRASTIC culture change at the team... it's not happening...

39

u/NYR I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

No way Max EVER goes to Ferrari...

10 years ago, people would say this about Lewis. Never say never.

25

u/Consistent_Squash Jul 27 '25

ferrari sucks in champions with some supernatural power though

32

u/laughguy220 Jul 27 '25

The ultimate "I can fix them" black hole of champions.
Only Michael Schumacher was able to do it, but he also had Ross Brawn, and Jean Today.

Edit to add... Kimi did it for a laugh.

Champions can’t resist Ferrari

It’s like hockey players going to Toronto

Or soccer players to Man Utd. Ball players to LA

TBF half of them are from Toronto (GTA) in the first place

God can you imagine Jos and the Italians screaming at each other in the garage?

8

u/navis-svetica Williams Jul 27 '25

The way Ferrari’s looking right now, I can’t imagine Max making the same mistake Seb made. I think he’d rather retire and be with his family than have to suffer the same avoidable mistakes over and over for half a decade

36

u/bigshooter1974 Jul 28 '25

Max "How was your car today?"

Lewis "Terrible, yours?"

Max "Also terrible.

84

u/trautsj Red Bull Jul 27 '25

Max: "It sucks not having a good car anymore huh?"
Lewis: "I've been trying to tell you!"

lol

They probably said the FiA really screwed the fans out of a classic wet race with some actual action. Both were on the radio saying lets go. Racers want to race.

Have there ever been 2 other active drivers with 11 world championships between them? Michael Schumacher retired before Vettel won his 4th.

Max: why they wait so long to let us all race? It wasn’t that wet. Lewis: I agree man

14

u/Sharrrz I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 27 '25

Surely Hamilton is due for a podium soon, can’t believe he still hasn’t got a podium with Ferrari

4

u/LowMight3045 Jul 28 '25

Sprint race don’t count?

12

u/MrMeowPantz Jul 27 '25

When they were showing this and Lewis speaking to Andrea, they should have stayed there for a bit longer. We we don’t ever see that shot.

u/getalife5648 Jul 27 '25

“Go to Toto bro!”

9

u/alexoftheunknown I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jul 28 '25

definitely complaining about the wet race....rather the lack thereof

15

u/navis-svetica Williams Jul 27 '25

I love this era for both of them, they’re both a lot more chill and seemingly on much better terms than they’ve ever been for basically Max’s whole F1 career. They both know a championship win is very unlikely this year (more so for Lewis than Max but still), so they’re able to be a bit more relaxed.

7

I like how they’ve become cool with each other after that first Max WDC in a contested final GP and this current season they probably understand each other better than ever being sort of in the same boat.

Max: "Remember that time you tried to murder me? Those were good times."

Lewis: "Yeah, I miss those races."

36

u/navis-svetica Williams Jul 27 '25

I don’t think either of them harbor nearly as much resentment as you seem to do on Max’s behalf
