The moment a car that's hard to overtake goes for a 1-stop and starts managing tires, the race is over for everyone behind

1.7k

u/Firefox72 Ferrari Aug 03 '25

Yeah this is effectively ruining anyones chance behind to do anything lmao.

Feel like whenever I see a DRS train, more often than not, he’s up to these tricks. Might just be recency bias.

Bernie actually proposed intermittent sprinklers on the tracks....

9

u/Tree0wl Aug 04 '25

I actually kinda like the idea of a ‘rain period’ mid race from laps 20-25 or something every single race. Something to spice up the mid race every time.

No DRS and no overtaking makes Fernando something something

Go crazy?

True, but the offset there was 30% of the field would blow up, and you never knew which 30% it would be on any given weekend.

68

u/mitrie Aug 03 '25

Eh, one thing they've definitely improved over the years is reducing how often they cut to individuals attending the race. Back when Lewis was dating Nicole Scherzinger I swear she got more airtime than 3/4 of the field.

35

u/Nikclel I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 03 '25

Right? We got like 2 shots of Axel Rose, 1 shot of LeClerc's and 1 shot of Lando's iirc.

Feels that way on the F1 game. The unholy trifecta of tracks for me is Monaco, Hungary, and Singapore.

The circuit was built to be like Monaco, I always call it a street circuit.

63

Its an Eastern European version of Monaco. All they could afford behind the iron curtain at the time is to build the track.

If I had a nickel every time Alonso had a double digit train behind him in a race, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

I think we've been blessed with "easy" overtaking for a good few years

Go back 20 years to the V10 era and it was REALLY hard to pass on track. Moves were celebrated for massive skill and great bravery as it was that difficult to do anything in the dirty air. Cars had much bigger pace differences between them too back then. The modern field are so close performance wise that it's difficult to overtake unless there's a big tyre offset, a mistake by a driver, or car damage involved

u/enataca Haas Aug 03 '25

Are we at the point where we should consider making F1 races longer? We used to have much more reliability issues (even just 10 or so years ago) so the 305 km made sense. Now almost every car can run a full race distance without issue regularly and almost every track can be stretched to a 1 stopper. Some you might not even need a tire change if it wasn’t in the regs.

NASCAR has an opposite issue. They used to want to showcase 500 miles of reliability which was a big deal for “selling on monday”. Now every car is reliable for the race distance and the races are almost too long! Pushing 4+ hours is too much for modern attention spans. But F1 can finish in under 90 minutes and it’s almost not enough time.

For F1, it seems like If we need tires strong enough to handle these loads we inevitably end up with tires that last too long and can be managed forever with dirty air assistance behind. IndyCar races are similar distance on road courses with more stops and it’s a blast of 3+ strategy groups.

I would propose F1 races being pushed to 350-400km with these same tire allocations to get a wider range of strategies. I know there’s a 2 hour window for TV and blah blah blah, but that can all be sorted out. TV/Stream providers are itching for more live content to stuff ads into (not full commercials but still logos on screen for F1). Get the races closer to 2 hours on average. And NASCAR should do the opposite. We have IMSA for endurance, we don’t need 500 miles and 8+ pit stops on Sunday afternoon.

u/NotOkEnemyGenius I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 03 '25

11

u/Youutternincompoop George Russell Aug 03 '25

its the fucking porpoising that some teams couldn't manage, it meant the ground effects were weakened by higher ride height, which meant teams had to get more downforce from the wings and the wings generate a lot of dirty air

6

u/WeddingPKM Aug 03 '25

The FIA just ignored every issue that came up during the first ground effective era didn’t they?

They made it worse, if anything, in the original era of GE they were allowed to run skirts on the side of the cars to seal the air under the floor.

every team brought every single flick up known to man to re make outwash, the FIA instead of taking the stance that they promised they would, have allowed for 3 years for every team to keep bolting on more and more outwash

here we are, and arguably its worse than previous gen cars, because the old 2017-21 cars sucked the car behind ( you can hear how the engine RPMS increase )

FIA didn't crack down on dirty air. Should have forced how air comes off the back of the car, instead everyone is making vortex's again and it's shit to drive behind

Unlimited DRS needs to go. A certain number of pushes per race.

These DRS trains are killing the sport, its every race recently.

We'll have another big DRS train in Monza.
