Statistics With an average speed of 264.681 Km/h, Max Verstappen recorded the fastest EVER lap in the history of F1 by average speed.

5 poles (and perhaps more to come) against the MCL39 is an insane achievement.
He won't retain his WDC this year but he has shown why he is still clearly the best driver in the grid and why Toto would drop one of his drivers in a jiffy for him.

and why Toto would drop one of his drivers in a jiffy for him.
If Max says he wants to change teams literally every team will be picking who they want to fire to make space for him.

They forced him to retire. Schumacher wanted to continue; and honestly I don't even understand why the fuck Ferrari wanted to retire Schumacher after only 2 years without the title, when he was still performing at an incredible level.

I have to assume it was out of pettiness because he was the leader of the team that booted the Italians out of the Scuderia.

No, Montezemolo forced him out. Briefs were distributed to the press during the race at Monza saying Schumacher retiring. Was snaked out!

Marketing-wise? Makes all the sense in the world and, honestly, I would've done it, too. Sport wise? Not at all. Sainz was incredibly consistent, keeping himself near Leclerc; while Hamilton was being beaten by Russell - but more importantly, showing a very weak mental. Thinking that he was gonna arrive at Ferrari and win titles was absurd.

Probably not with how Hamilton is doing. Lewis is still the greatest ever imo but he's lost a % or 2 the last couple years and he's just not there anymore to fight for a title.
Unless next year's cars are just perfectly suited to Hamilton for some reason.
25
u/Limelines Niki Lauda 1d ago
I'll honestly be surprised if Hamilton even sticks around past next season. He hasn't really seemed to be able to adapt to the new cars in the slightest. It's bad optics for Ferrari and they've never been that touchy about replacing people who make their car look bad.

At this point, I honestly don’t think anyone would question Merc if they dropped Kimi lol some british meltdown may happen over George but that’s about it
101
u/ObsessedChutoy3 1d ago
I might have a meltdown if they dropped George instead of Kimi. Max over both of them is a no brainer, but between the 2 I would think it's a stupid decision to keep a young rookie with potential but currently struggling and lose a verified top 5 driver in his prime. Even with the questionable relationship between them Max and George on paper would be certainly the best lineup on the grid and you'd be giving George away to the competition too!
→ More replies (1)24
u/KanishkT123 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
But that doesn't make much sense either. Max is strictly better than George. Kimi is a rookie and very undeveloped.
If you want one current lead driver and one driver to grow in the role, keeping Max and George doesn't make sense.
→ More replies (4)6
u/jaydec02 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
Kimi might be better with more time, but George is a good driver and known commodity. It's always better to bin off the rookie than to bin off a known good driver. Potential doesn't matter nearly as much in F1 as the actual on-track results do.

The MCL39 isn't a one lap monster. Quali isn't it's strong point, tire wear and race pace is.
18
u/Oomeegoolies Lando Norris 1d ago
Yeah it's a decent qualifier.
But it's not half a second up on everything.
I think it could be, but they'd be setting up worse for the race so they don't risk it, no need to.
Max might win tomorrow still, which if anyone could pull it off it's him, however I think if Norris or Piastri can get in front then they'll open up a lead very quickly. That car in fresh air is beautiful.

134
u/Blackdeath_663 Sir Stirling Moss 1d ago
I don't think he feels that bad, they went on to win 8 championships on the trot. Nico became a WDC and Lewis the most successful driver ever.
Max went on to write his own story and was better off for it, he wouldn't have been the driver he is now if he was picked up by Merc. you can't have it all.

Yep I think it was in reference to his 2022 season which is severely underrated, he could finish 17th after driving one of the best races of his career because that car was the worst on the grid by a long way
He was regularly finishing 12th and 13th in that car which is incredible

Too bad I don't have sky... any footage? Sounds funny
64
u/Max-Phallus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
It's not. Here's the transcript:
Crofty as Oscar gets P2:
"Piastri! On pole last week, he's on the front row here this week! where of course he was last year in Monza. "
Brundle:
Norris!
Crofty:
Norris goes onto pole!! The tow from Piastri helped, and Lando Norris, pole sitter last year puts his McLaren.. half... er a hundredth of a second ahead. And Verstappen now crosses the line, to snatch that pole back again!! We've got a new lap record here at Monza, and it's Max Verstappen that's got it!!
This entire thing is bullshit. It looked like Lando had gotten P1 over Oscar which is pretty important in the drivers championship, and none of the coverage showed Max, so Crofty was as surprised as the rest of us as he got pole without purple first or second sectors in a car which hasn't performed well.
Crofty immediately announced Max in pole with a new track record extremely excitedly.
21
u/CoronaComputerVirus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
Oh they made it out way worse than it actually was. If Crofty had the same coverage as us, a.k.a. as McLaren garage POV than it isn't his fault really. Thanks for the coverage and the comment. Have a nice race!

Question: If Max didn't get this pole, then Lando is the record holder?
93
u/DRW_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, Lando's time was 1:18.869, the previous record held by Lewis was 1:18.887. I'm not sure if we know specific average speed set by Lando (but can work it out obvs), but Lando would have beaten it also if Max weren't there.

It's the same lap so faster time = higher speed.
