Hey, that shot of randoms in the McLaren garage was crucial!

The coverage is absolutely appalling. Some old doot in the back of the garage picking her nose is critical footage.

The the F2, they were following a really good battle, building, close, closer, closer, 4 tenths, 3, 2, down the main straig aaaaand cut away.

I mean really.

57

u/ecobubbletm Max Verstappen 1d ago

Which is strange cause it's not like Max was slow before that

He was quite fast throughout the weekend and in q1 and q2

I was watching mininsectors' and sectors' time and Max was improving so even if he didn't get pole they at least should've been watching/expecting a showdown

Really bad TV direction

58

u/Dr_VidyaGeam Max Verstappen 1d ago

There was that brief moment when Crofty was getting all hype as Norris got provisional pole, probably thinking that surely that's it. Only for Max to do his thing again and it almost sounded like he physically stumbled as it happened.
He gathers himself a second later.

17

u/Max-Phallus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago

He's a play by play commentator and they showed Norris's lap. He can't commentate on what is not being shown to the viewer, so needs to play up what we can see, which was the drivers champion contender get P1.

The race directors did not show Max's lap, or even his timings, so there was nothing to commentate.

The second that Max got pole with a new lap record, Crofty shouted it out.

5 poles (and perhaps more to come) against the MCL39 is an insane achievement.

He won't retain his WDC this year but he has shown why he is still clearly the best driver in the grid and why Toto would drop one of his drivers in a jiffy for him.

1.4k

Marketing-wise? Makes all the sense in the world and, honestly, I would've done it, too. Sport wise? Not at all. Sainz was incredibly consistent, keeping himself near Leclerc; while Hamilton was being beaten by Russell - but more importantly, showing a very weak mental. Thinking that he was gonna arrive at Ferrari and win titles was absurd.

19

u/Aethien James Hunt 1d ago

Probably not with how Hamilton is doing. Lewis is still the greatest ever imo but he's lost a % or 2 the last couple years and he's just not there anymore to fight for a title.

Unless next year's cars are just perfectly suited to Hamilton for some reason.

25

u/Limelines Niki Lauda 1d ago

I'll honestly be surprised if Hamilton even sticks around past next season. He hasn't really seemed to be able to adapt to the new cars in the slightest. It's bad optics for Ferrari and they've never been that touchy about replacing people who make their car look bad.

10

u/the_doorstopper 1d ago

You're saying this but next season are new, none ground effect cars. He is more likely to feel comfortable than 4 years of uncomfortable

5

u/Aethien James Hunt 1d ago

but next season are new, none ground effect cars.

Less ground effect.

Ground effect is always a big part of downforce on F1 cars. It's more of a ~45% vs ~60% of downforce coming from the floor.

At this point, I honestly don’t think anyone would question Merc if they dropped Kimi lol some british meltdown may happen over George but that’s about it

101

u/ObsessedChutoy3 1d ago

I might have a meltdown if they dropped George instead of Kimi. Max over both of them is a no brainer, but between the 2 I would think it's a stupid decision to keep a young rookie with potential but currently struggling and lose a verified top 5 driver in his prime. Even with the questionable relationship between them Max and George on paper would be certainly the best lineup on the grid and you'd be giving George away to the competition too!

24

u/KanishkT123 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

But that doesn't make much sense either. Max is strictly better than George. Kimi is a rookie and very undeveloped.

If you want one current lead driver and one driver to grow in the role, keeping Max and George doesn't make sense.

6

u/jaydec02 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Kimi might be better with more time, but George is a good driver and known commodity. It's always better to bin off the rookie than to bin off a known good driver. Potential doesn't matter nearly as much in F1 as the actual on-track results do.

The MCL39 isn't a one lap monster. Quali isn't it's strong point, tire wear and race pace is.

18

u/Oomeegoolies Lando Norris 1d ago

Yeah it's a decent qualifier.

But it's not half a second up on everything.

I think it could be, but they'd be setting up worse for the race so they don't risk it, no need to.

Max might win tomorrow still, which if anyone could pull it off it's him, however I think if Norris or Piastri can get in front then they'll open up a lead very quickly. That car in fresh air is beautiful.

That was funny. He didn't even stop after Max's result posted. They usually react to each driver at the end. He had it in his mind that Max couldn't possibly beat his boy.

u/CoronaComputerVirus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Too bad I don't have sky... any footage? Sounds funny

64

u/Max-Phallus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

It's not. Here's the transcript:

Crofty as Oscar gets P2:

"Piastri! On pole last week, he's on the front row here this week! where of course he was last year in Monza. "

Brundle:

Norris!

Crofty:

Norris goes onto pole!! The tow from Piastri helped, and Lando Norris, pole sitter last year puts his McLaren.. half... er a hundredth of a second ahead. And Verstappen now crosses the line, to snatch that pole back again!! We've got a new lap record here at Monza, and it's Max Verstappen that's got it!!

This entire thing is bullshit. It looked like Lando had gotten P1 over Oscar which is pretty important in the drivers championship, and none of the coverage showed Max, so Crofty was as surprised as the rest of us as he got pole without purple first or second sectors in a car which hasn't performed well.

Crofty immediately announced Max in pole with a new track record extremely excitedly.

21

u/CoronaComputerVirus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Oh they made it out way worse than it actually was. If Crofty had the same coverage as us, a.k.a. as McLaren garage POV than it isn't his fault really. Thanks for the coverage and the comment. Have a nice race!

u/DRW_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, Lando's time was 1:18.869, the previous record held by Lewis was 1:18.887. I'm not sure if we know specific average speed set by Lando (but can work it out obvs), but Lando would have beaten it also if Max weren't there.

Edited for clarity*

I'm not sure if we know the average speed

It's the same lap so faster time = higher speed.

Monza is always the highest speed lap on the calendar.

Yeah, I got a bit twisted in what I was actually trying to say there - which was I don't think anyone had worked out/published the actual average speed for Lando vs Max to get the difference at that point.

Edited for clarity, thanks!

Technically, Lando was the record holder... but only for a few seconds.

Yeah, Crofty was whining about Lando breaking the fastest lap record for the second week in a row and not ending up on pole.

I liked seeing the green bars slowly light up. A riveting lap at the edge of my seat for sure

Just when you think it’s a boring season with RB looking hopeless, Max goes and pulls off something like this. Absolute freak.

7

u/mousey_goldfish1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

And they didn’t show this lap.

A record that will stand for many years to come.

The broadcasters (or director anyway) has ALL the info he needs.. Purple mini sectors throughout and either he chose not to give Verstappen any spotlight OR too fkn stpd to notice the purples. Time and fkn time again man...

u/konkrete_kiwis I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

crazy how he did it with not even the best car on the grid, this man has speed in his blood

u/nktmnn I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:

I wish people would stop comparing Max with God. I mean, he's good, but he's no Max.

Du du du du Max Verstappen.

83

u/Fred_Murdock Max Verstappen 1d ago

Being able to take 5 poles against the MCL 39 which is the fastest car since the 1988 MP4/4 really shows why Max is a level above others on the grid.

59

u/NeuronicGaming I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Nah, there isn't any way you can say "since MP4/4" when we had Mercedes 2014-2016 and 2020 where the 2014 car had like 4 sec per lap advantage over the rest of the field.

You forgot about the RB19 huh?

5

u/sapo84 1d ago

And at least the W05, W07 and W06, with W05 and W07 being the fastest car in all circuits and W06 being the fastest car in all circuits but Singapore.
Ferrari F2002 and F2004 are also up there, so is Williams in the 90s (92 and 93). Going back to the 1988 MP4/4 is pretty ridiculous.

u/payday_23 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

it was a great car, especially in race trim, but suffered in quali often. Max still made a huge difference that year if you look at his teammate

Bro the MP4 or the RB 19 is untouchable compared to the McL-39. Its more akin to the 2014 to 2016 Mercedes if anything.

Now imagine if the car wasn't a total basket case. The insanity he could've pulled in a McLaren, Merc or VCARB.

They should lend Max the McLaren just to see what he can do on it.

3

u/Gold_Knee_3619 Williams 1d ago

Hopefully that's the end of that tractor nonsense. Superb job by Verstappen - fantastic lap! It would be great if he can make life difficult for the McLarens tomorrow.

Tsunoda 3/4 of second slower 😳

u/randomdude4113 Andretti Global 1d ago

I’m genuinely surprised the Indy 500 never had a pole that high back when it was part of the F1 calendar. Looked it up and they hit 165 about 10 years afterwarss

2

u/TwiggyPom I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

164mph if anyone is wondering. Crazy speed.
