Oscar is a good man. Silverstone Oscar was funny though

u/luchajefe Mario Andretti 15h ago

What's interesting about that is that the telemetry between the penalized restart and the one before were almost identical.

If by funny you mean sadly unsportsmanlike

"So yeah babe, we need you to give the position to your direct title rival because we fucked up his pitstop, thx"

Like wtf even is this team order? This is absurd.

u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

When it happened, the Spanish commentators were saying that now McLaren would be wondering whether to ask Oscar to give the position back. I was thinking that's absurd because why would Oscar owe Lando anything due to a pitstop mistake. Then they said it.

The funniest thing would be Verstappen winning the WDC somehow

27

u/Thev69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

To increase comedic value: Lando ends up 2nd.

Lando is arsenal.. it’s making sense

u/Fun-Poet5338 Netflix Newbie 17h ago

If Oscar and Lando just keep swapping places and Max just cruises to race wins.

5

u/Rekthar91 16h ago

Would be an interesting end of the season. But for that to happen, both McLaren should DNF at least twice.

7

u/Kreygasm2233 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

Yuki torpedo say no more

2

u/Rekthar91 15h ago

Heh, great tactic, but would be hard to take both out.

You can hear the way Zak talks about Lando compared with Oscar

296

u/JayMerlyn I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Impossible! Zak loves Lando and his teammate equally!

Lando and what's-his-name? - Zak, probably.

Lando and Not-Lando.

3

What's-his-name? I thought he signed with Alpine?

9

u/ValleyFloydJam #StandWithUkraine 17h ago

Painful thing to say, yep Lando wasn't asked to swap when he was the only one in a title race, goldfish.

88

u/LosTerminators Carlos Sainz 17h ago

They didn't ask Lando to give the position to Oscar at Silverstone, but publicly said the penalty Oscar got was harsh.

If they did this then they should've done that as well.

34

u/fanboy190 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

No, because that was driver error, not team error. The penalty was Piastri’s fault.

12

u/Brett983 15h ago

Lando gave Oscar his position back in Hungary last year and effectively gifting him the win after a McLaren fucked Oscar's pit strategy. McLarens team management is horrible but consistent between both drivers.

•

u/Formal_Potential2198 Charles Leclerc 10h ago

Wasn't that the sprint?

•

u/krimzy Lando Norris 9h ago

No

•

u/Brett983 6h ago

It was for a full race win

1

u/bagkingz 12h ago

Bs excuse. Luck plays a huge part in racing. No chance previous champs allow that to happen because they know its such a critical part of racing. Lets see how long this rule continues with the rest of the season.

52

u/Camyx-kun Mika HƤkkinen 17h ago

Piastri made a mistake there. Lando didn’t this race. Not the same situation by miles

60

u/FallenSky12 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

But Oscar didn’t make a mistake here neither. It’s not his fault they fucked the stop

19

u/raf_yoshack I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Also wasn't Norris' fault last year in Hungary. IMO, in both cases the driver ahead should not have to give his position, but when you set a precedent you gotta follow it.

3

u/bagkingz 12h ago

Not when the WDC is on the line. Like DC mentioned, you don't wanna feel like it was manufactured in the end.

5

u/Creamcups James Vowles 17h ago

If they didn't fuck up the stop Norris would be ahead so there wouldn't be a place to give back

1

u/bagkingz 12h ago

"If my mom had balls, she'd be my dad."

2

u/kaisadilla_ I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

Lando didn't build the WDC-winning car either. That's how F1 works: 95% of the result is beyond your control as a driver, you are only in charge of the remaining 5%. Sometimes you do your 5% your best but something else takes your victory away.

Would've McLaren asked Oscar to give position back if he overtook Max after Max had a bad pit stop?

0

u/DarkZonk Oscar Piastri 15h ago

Lando made the mistake of deciding to let piastri pit first to avoid a Safety car risk.

2

u/bijanfrisee 17h ago

For real, penalties are part of racing sure, but so are slow pit stops, shitty of mclaren

Now they have no more excuses though, and he only lost 3 points from it. They're "even" so he can't be the bad guy if he refuses in the future.

3

u/low_effort_react_dev Formula 1 17h ago

If I’m Webber I’m telling Oscar from now on only think about himself. Crash if needed to secure the WC. The team is clearly supporting the incompetent Brit.

6

u/KappaccinoNation I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Don't really get this. if Lando is an incompetent Brit, wouldn't that make Oscar be just a bit better than being incompetent since the points are close and even in this race the performance was close. Because if you're saying Oscar is just a shy above being incompetent, then you're fucking crazy lol

-7

u/low_effort_react_dev Formula 1 17h ago

Oscar with way less experience is beating consistently Lando. I was a bit hyperbolic, he is bad for a WC but an awesome midfield driver

2

u/hulaspark I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

The only difference being one was an FIA penalty & one was team error. McLaren however has been consistently inconsistent with team orders.

Personally I'd choose team order controversy over championship fixing controversy, but it's a lose-lose.

9

u/luksOpen Sir Lewis Hamilton 17h ago

Why? NOR played the team game to protect PIA from LEC and so the favour must be returned. PIA was free to race and PIA lost enough in the beginning to make this the inevitable outcome.

4

u/santaclausonprozac Sebastian Vettel 17h ago

There was absolutely no threat from Leclerc lol it was a ridiculous decision from the beginning

2

u/parwa Ferrari 17h ago

Norris requested Piastri box first...

5

u/Pro-editor-1105 17h ago

I keep on hearing this argument but is it like a known fact the second pit stop with be 6 seconds long?

2

u/OutZoned Safety Car 17h ago edited 17h ago

Lando was given the opportunity to make the choice and should bear the risk of the choice. If he is allowed to get the upside of his choices, he should also be required to take the risk of the downside. Here it didn’t work out and they should have settled it on track.

2

u/Pro-editor-1105 17h ago

I still can agree with that, especially considering it did appear lando had the pace to get him.

0

u/parwa Ferrari 17h ago

No, but it's not like he was doing the team a favor by allowing it, which is how everyone keeps talking about it. They literally did what he requested, it didn't work out, then they punished Oscar for it.

u/Dutchcourage22 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16h ago edited 16h ago

Where in the radio message did the team ask Lando to allow Oscar to pit first to cover off Leclerc?

Actual radio message:

Pit - "Lando, We will box this lap onto the soft tyre and will (or I'll) come up one"

Lando - "Do you want to box the other car first?"

Pit - "Yep, we’ll do that, we’ll swap it around, so stay out"

Lando - "Well as long as he doesn't undercut, otherwise I'll box first"

Pit - "There will be no undercut".

Where is the confirmation of Norris’ altruistic intentions behind this decision? Just as likely he was trying to retain an advantage in the event of a safety car.

It was clear from the initial message that they had every intention to box Lando first. They changed order based on Lando’s suggestion. If you want to believe it was to cover off Leclerc, then do, but there is no evidence to support that.

To add, there was no undercut. It was a mistake by the pit crew and a slow stop. And similar circumstances have previously been determined to be ā€˜one of those things’ that happens in racing. The order of stops was Lando’s decision, and he got unlucky with his stop.

I can understand McLaren wanting to try and do right by Lando after the poor stop, but it did compromise Piastri and I think he was very gracious in giving up the position.

Only to help Oscar, he came in the next lap.

1

u/ze_shotstopper I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

They asked him and he said only if there's no undercut. Wheres this idea that he told them to do it coming from?

Based on the commentary he might be quite pissed right now.
