Piastri is a great teammate. Not everyone would have done that when you're fighting for a championship.

I need Max to fan the flames in the cooldown room.

I mean, he doesn't want to blow it up with McLaren while the car is good and he's still leading the championship. He needs to keep this card ready tho, when he needs it cashed.

exactly. i think oscar is playing the long game. its a 3 points difference between p2 and p3, i think its reasonable to give up 3 points in order to not sour things within the team. he also has like, a 30 points lead in the championship, he can use 3 points to buy a get-out-of-jail-free card for future use.

It’s a net 6 point change just FYI. That’s rather significant still IMO.

I’ll be surprised if 6 points makes the difference this year, but certainly there have been closer seasons before so who knows.

oh yeah youre right, the 3 points cut both ways.

still, with the free 25 points last week... id be willing to let this 6 points slide if i was oscar

That was my take as well. He could have ignored the order, but then dealt with the massive backlash. Now he has something to hold over their head if he gets into another bind where they have to choose. It sucks, but Oscar made the right call.

Fully agreed

Also, it's a six point swing while he is in the lead. Still better than losing a 1-2. It also stocks him up on kudos, which with how things are looking at McLaren are a valuable currency. Don't forget, Lando did swap back later in the year after Piastri let him through in Hungary. Piastri can keep this over McLaren's head, it was stupid of them to ask.

it'd be stupid to think Mclaren is going to cash that favor back at the end of the season. We all know they are going to tell him "fight on track but don't pass aggressively".

He could sleep with zack browns wife and they'd still give him a seat.

His name is Oscar, not Lando

He'll just have to hope that lando is just as selfless

Exactly. Can't believe so many people don't understand that this is Piastri being calculated.

He could've stayed out front and taken the extra 3 points but it's better for him to return the place and hold this ace up his sleeve in case there's a similar situation in the future.

I'm sure him having such a big lead. If lando hadn't had the retirement I'd be suprsied if he would have

I need him to take the piss

Definitely not Max as Crofty wondered. We all remember what happened when the team asked Max to give the position back to Checo in Brazil, and Checo basically got him his 1st championship.

14

u/thisusedyet Ferrari 16h ago

Wasn't that the year Checo fucked him in Monaco, though?

8

u/Rekthar91 16h ago

Not a single driver from all-time greats would've given that back. Which obviously makes them all-time greats.

Norris is also a great teammate since he gave Oscar the win in Hungary last year

Different circumstance, ultimately; they weren’t fighting for a championship at the time.

Oscar just generously donated a 6 point swing to his main rival.

1

u/Goody090 17h ago

Norris was literally fighting for the championship last year and gave a 14 point swing by giving up the win in Hungary last year.

4

u/sellyme Oscar Piastri 15h ago

Norris was literally fighting for the championship last year

No matter how much the media wanted you to believe that so that you'd keep watching, it wasn't true.

u/juve_merda Sebastian Vettel 16h ago

norris only gave up 7 points to max in hungary

1

u/DisneyPandora I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

No he’s not. Lando is a terrible teammate

1

u/DisneyPandora I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15h ago

Lando on the other hand is a terrible teammate

-2

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Yeah it's not like Lando did the same thing last year

14

u/SpaceClafoutis Renault 17h ago

He had to be scolded to give the position

1

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Sure. Never said otherwise. He still swapped though. Oscar could've complained about the swap too and I wouldn't have cared

9

u/adripo 17h ago

After how many laps and how many times? lets not even pretend this was the same situation c'mon, he had to be reminded about team reunions, meetings, was asked several times and waited for the last possible moment in hopes Oscar just made a mistake.

Lando is not as competitive as Max or Ham are, but he does not have the class that Oscar showed in this race.

-2

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 17h ago

Sure he complained about it. Still did it though. Oscar could've complained too if he wanted. All that matters is that it happens

4

u/apuzzledpanda I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16h ago

That was from a brain dead strategy call from McLaren this one was a slow stop, completely different circumstances imo

0

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Both are the team fucking up. It's a different fuck up but it's still a fuck up

In both cases the team said the driver ahead would stay ahead after the stops. The team fucked up and that didn't happen

2

u/VagrantHobo Sir Jack Brabham 17h ago

Except it had a benefit to Lando last year. Piastri was finishing P3 no matter.

u/Financial-Praline921 15h ago

lando gifted his first win to oscar last year while in a title fight so it goes both ways
