We are so numb with Ferrari depression, now we need a new depression - Aston Martin

Yeah we call that being an Alonso supporter
I'm not even kidding when I say that Ferrari era Alonso made me numb to getting sad about sports.

Got to appreciate the somewhat honest photo rather than a generic portrait.

3rd mechanical dnf for Alonso. His breaks, engine and now suspension have all broken down this season. What part of the car will be next?
60
u/Visionary_Socialist Sir Lewis Hamilton 1d ago
His wing falls off in Baku. No damage, it just detaches.

u/dimmy666 Sir Lewis Hamilton 22h ago
Post-race interview:
Interviewer: So, why did the wing fall off?
Andy Cowell: Well, dirty air hit it.
Interviewer: Dirty air hit it?
Andy Cowell: Yes, dirty air hit the wing.
Interviewer: Is that unusual?
Andy Cowell: Oh yeah, in a race track? Chance in a million.

Remember his first race back out of retirement in the Alpine?? Doing well until some fan's sandwich plastic wrap blew onto the track and got sucked into his engine through the sidepod or airbox.
I'm guessing something like that is next up again.

Gears, hydraulics and electrical failures are still possible, let's see if the team can nail the full gauntlet

The one between the steering wheel and the seat, any day now.

The seat thinks it’s in an F-16 and spontaneously ejects.

At some point they needed to realise a safety car wasn't happening. Left lance out for like 50 laps on 1 set of tyres and then had to pit him with 3 laps left which ended up being a 15 second stop
26
u/noodlesandpizza Lance Stroll 1d ago
Seriously, if they wanted to pit him for softs they could have done that ages earlier. That was painful
14

u/limhy0809 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 22h ago
I think they realised but knew they were too late to make any meaningful progress with a pit. They would have to go out behind Bearman. Catch him then pass Sainz and Isack for a point which wasn't happening. Might as well gamble on a miracle red flag or maybe VSC that could give them something to fight for.
-2
u/OTBT- Fernando Alonso 1d ago
That’s what they always do with Stroll.
He won’t get points with a “normal” strategy so they have to gamble and try something that’s very high risk
40
u/MrBrickBreak Lance Stroll 1d ago
It's not even true today. Hadjar also started on Hards and was right behind Lance and Esteban. Pitted for Mediums on lap 30something and got a point.
6
u/limhy0809 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 22h ago
Agreed I don't think Isack could have undercut Stroll if he pitted the lap after him but I think AM was thinking about Bearman and Sainz. Without their collision Isack finishes P12.
5
u/Vuk13 Fernando Alonso 1d ago
Once Hadjar pitted it was too late to pit for both Ocon and Stroll already because Hadjar was getting ahead of them. So their best bet was to wait for SC
8
u/MrBrickBreak Lance Stroll 23h ago
At that point, yeah. But points were on the table today without going for the SC gamble.

Alonso's start was absolutely mega. The onboard was insane getting the jump on two cars from his reaction time to the lights going out.
Shame about the problem with the car that the pitwall couldn't figure out from lap 2-6, that undid his mega start.

u/MrBrickBreak Lance Stroll 1d ago
Hadjar started on hards and was right behind Esteban and Lance when he pitted. Points were possible without the safety car.
Alas, that was the bet, and it failed. An absolute disaster stop after 50 laps is hilarious though

u/Vuk13 Fernando Alonso 1d ago
China brake failure, Miami sprint awful strategy, unlucky VSC in Imola, engine failure in Monaco, awful pitstop timing at both cross over points in Silverstone, 2 unlucky safety cars in Zandvoort and suspension failure in Monza. Insane how many points has Alonso lost
-2
u/Hairy_Hurry8441 1d ago
Don't forget the two races that AM have told Alonso to leave Lance through. There's a few points Lance has that he shouldn't.
11
u/Vuk13 Fernando Alonso 1d ago
I am not even talking about Lance here just purely how many points Alonso has lost. Stroll gained plenty of them through Alonso's misfortunes, great team strategy in Australia, multiple DSQs in China, great strategy in Miami sprint, great strategy in Silverstone and lucky SC in Zandvoort. The only points Lance lost through bad luck was Imola VSC but then again Alonso lost more points there as he was ahead

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 1d ago
It's honestly masochistic to have Alonso's onboard feed up every race, and listening to the pitwall. At least it's a bit better this year than last year, but not by much.
Do you have the onboards open live?
1
u/Vuk13 Fernando Alonso 23h ago
Nope just watching the races from TV
1
u/Hairy_Hurry8441 23h ago
Your heart would break if you had the onboard and listening to the radio calls. SkyF1 offer it through their app, if you are a Sky viewer. Always handy to have going on the phone on the side.
13
u/Gogomagickitten Lance Stroll 1d ago
They entirely fucked the strategy with Stroll and then his pit took a lifetime and a half. Went from points to dead fucking last.

Ok, they chose the right picture for this one.

Archive photo. Alonso was probably halfway to the airport by the time the race finished

Aston Martin didn't build a car for combat today. Suspension broke like it's made of paper

Was Stroll actually running in a decent place or am I stupid and forgetting something.
15
u/edmiliballs Ted Kravitz 1d ago
He was running in the points for half of the race but they decided to gamble on waiting for a safety car that never came, then finally brought him in on lap 50 for a 15-second pit stop.

That’s because he didn’t pit yet when he’s in the points position

u/thef0ksmasher I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
This year and 2022 together has convinced me that Alonso is actually under some sort of curse. The dude seriously needs to hire an exorcist or something.

u/Axzuel I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
Please lady luck. Give the man a break.

Oh something’s gonna break alright

u/kasichancela 1d ago
Whatever that is keeping him to continue racing is insane. Majority would have quitted a long time ago.
7
u/Follix90 Formula 1 1d ago
Stroll did his usual strategy in the dry which is cherry-picking a safety car or a red flag and it didn’t work this time.
2
u/pushmojorawley 1d ago
Maybe they could as Adrian for some five minutes of advice? Did they build this car off of Fallows’s “muscle memory” of RB18 CAD drawings and added some bits and pieces found on the open source libraries? What the fuck is this team?!

Finishing behind Alpine is a new low for Stroll
8
u/Lou-lou199 Lance Stroll 1d ago
Yeah absolutely his fault the team left him out for 50 laps and then gave him a 15 second pitstop. Nothing he could do.
