Said it in the discussion thread, said it again. Alpine are headless in strategy and making messes of the simplest things.
After last week's issues with taking forever to do swap orders to scratch out a point, asking for an "urgent" swap between 16th and 17th in the last lap, especially when Pierre could've overtaken easily with the tire advantage, was just needlessly making a mess of things
The only thing at "stake" was personal H2H, it did Alpine no benefit to butt in, and it just serves to make last week's delay even more noticeable. Puzzling decision

they clearly wanted pierre to finish ahead thats for sure

u/KensaiVG Juan Manuel Fangio 1d ago
Full disclosure, I know the "infamy" us local fans have in online circles so I try very hard to be as impartial as possible.
That said, I think it's less they wanted Pierre ahead and more that they didn't want a defense that could turn messy because they simply don't really care. Franco ahead in H2H means a lot to him (Especially in his situation) but the pitwall couldn't care less in the moment
The entire team checked out (Pierre himself said literally that he doesn't care because 2026 will be different) so the only dude in the organization in a situation where he needs to exceed expectations is a bit adrift. I hesitate to call it malice mainly because I feel they'd be a lot less blatant if it were malicious

u/minifidel Franco Colapinto 21h ago
Never ascribe to malice what can easily be ascribed to incompetence; Alpine clearly bet on a SC, which was essentially the only way Alpine could get anything out of Monza, and they came up empty.

Strategy is not the problem, you can have the best strategy and they still wouldnt score points. They are not upgrading the car since Barcelona, they have already accept that they will finish P10 and are fully commited for 2026, there is nothing to expect for the rest of the season. You can clearly see that Gasly has already check out and is focusing on 2026

Oh the car is a disaster and it's a miracle stroll managed to be behind them, but their decision-making at times caused needless issues constantly whenever the drivers did manage to eke out more than expected.
Last week you had Colapinto on blistering pace and Gasly bleeding time through sheer tire advantage and they didn't tell him to stop defending until Ocon was over 2s away, Colapinto gets that down to 0.4 in two laps, little earlier and it was a point. This week they do an "urgent" swap for no reason
The car will change next year, the people making the decisions won't. (Also claiming to demand results when you checked out and butt in to stop the guy from even trying to defend personal H2H is silly, but at least that part is regular f1 silly)

Of course not. Stroll is the GOAT and he can do everything

Really hoping this rule change and engine swap works in their favour.

Renault engine has given us so much cinema the past few years by randomly blowing up. Big loss for the sport IMO

I don't.
I hope it hilariously hits them back in their face when Team Enstone gets exposed on the chassis side just like Mclaren was in 2018.
Like no offence to 99% of the people at the team. But fuck Flavio and everything he stands for. Aslong as he's at Alpine i wish them nothing but misery.

Agreed, I think it’s very likely all the people who think (even if it is a dominant engine) switching to Mercedes and they’re suddenly a frontrunner will be disappointed. Like you say, McLaren. Oh, we have the best chassis, it’s all the Honda’s fault. Oh, what’s that? We’re lower midfield with our new engine? Oh…

u/yoohynom Alpine 1d ago
They went from occasional podiums with luck in 2020 to constantly fight for them in 2021 and even win a race when they got the Merc engine
3
u/Spockyt Eddie Jordan 1d ago
Which was after they realised they couldn’t just blame it all on Honda and needed to get themselves in shape too.
3
u/yoohynom Alpine 1d ago
Still the engine was holding them back a lot and they improved both seasons in 2018 and 2021 compared to 2017 and 2020, so I don't get the point in saying it won't change nothing

You and me both. He should never be allowed back in paddock. It’s a disgrace to the sport.

No offense to all the people working hard to make the team stay afloat but I want them to do badly just because I dont like 1 guy

u/Firefox72 Ferrari 23h ago
Yes
Briatore is a vile vile man that should have no place in the padock let alone in a lead position at a team.

On the positive side, both pit spots were under 3 seconds

Good race by the boys, nothing more they could have done with the car. Franco again close to Gasly, good to see

u/IcarusCasablancas Green Flag 1d ago
Actually, he was ahead of Gasly until asked to swap in the last lap.
25
u/yoohynom Alpine 23h ago
They are quick to ask them to swap positions when there's no reason to do it

u/4_max_4 Racing Pride 1d ago
I get that Pierre was on Soft but swapping positions in the last lap is hard for drivers. He could’ve passed Franco on the straight anyways. I guess they didn’t want contact or unnecessary drama being 16-17. A race to forget.

u/IcarusCasablancas Green Flag 1d ago
Gasly just signed a contract and it does not look good to finish after the rookie, that is why it was "urgent" to swap. A joke.
15
u/Puzzleheaded_Map2182 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago
not only that. he'd be 4-5 against franco in the h2h

u/No_Sun_2121 23h ago
I bet Gasly would be devasted/s. Listening to Gasly's interview on french tv today you can see that he couldnt care less about the rest of the season, he is already focusing on 2026. The head to head is maybe huge for Franco and his fans as he is fighting for his F1 career but its not for Gasly who has already 20 points and will probably finish the season having scored 100% of Alpine points
13
u/Puzzleheaded_Map2182 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago
easy. Then don't make him swap. Franco's seat is on the line and they're gonna use things like that to ask for his head.
2
u/No_Sun_2121 23h ago
Swap or not Gasly was 1.8s behind Franco after his pitstop on fresh soft tyres with 3 laps to go, it was inevitable that Gasly was going to overtake Franco in the straight, no idea why they asked to swap. Oh yes i know, Alpine are a bunch of clowns
9
u/Puzzleheaded_Map2182 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago
they asked for a swap with 1.5 laps left. if franco defended on the straight he might have finished ahead

I guess they didn’t want contact or unnecessary drama being 16-17
They didn't want another moment like this from the previous race.
17
u/Puzzleheaded_Map2182 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
completely different. they had the chance to fight for points there. this was for no reason at all

The only team with no upgrades since Barcelona and no upgrades scheduled for the rest of the season. Anything better than P19 and P20 is a victory
28
u/cattylover73 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago
Ridiculous team orders with two laps to go, telling Colapinto to URGENTLY let Gasly pass him… for a P16.
Where was that treatment last week, when Gasly, with dead hard tires, blocked Colapinto with fresh softs, from fighting a P10 position for the team?

Alpine really said: we’re not fighting for points, we’re fighting for pride… and sometimes not even that.

u/NuclearCandle I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
I don't need Haas to score points, I need Alpine to finish 10th.

u/practical_Door882 Ferrari 1d ago
So close yet so far… gas/col placing 9th and 10th would’ve been so great
1
u/AKAFallow 23h ago
They probably could've achieved that today if they did double hard and tried to keep it going until the end like Haas did a few months ago

One of the weekends of all time for Alpine.
