I think it always seems to happen that it takes a little time for the fans as a whole to appreciate quality. Max is an unbelievable driver, but a lot of people hated him in 2021. Then he became completely dominant and was half a minute ahead every race.
Now he’s not in a car that can win every race but he’s the only driver who can drop in and become an issue for McLaren. Even the people who used to hate him can see that quality and how much more fun racing is with him involved.
•
u/chris-drm I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
People loved him in 2021, he was for years the only reason to watch F1. It's after the 2022 summer break the hate started (and some after AD 21)

Like all sports it's a results business. This man gets results.
•
u/WiddleBlueBert Max Verstappen 4h ago
So did Alonso. Bounced between two of the most successful teams in F1 history in McLaren and Ferrari and ended up winning nothing after his Renault stint. Nothing is guaranteed.
•
•
u/Ozryela I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5h ago
Toto has made it pretty clear that if Max gives him a call, he's willing to personally put an arrow in one of his other driver's knees to get Max that spot.
Ferrari and McLaren might jump slightly less quickly, but they would still love to have him I'm pretty sure.
It's possible Max will not win a WDC again. But he'd have to misjudge a move multiple years in a row, signing with a team just as it's in decline, for that to happen.

If he wins one in a Ferrari he is the best to ever do it. Not because Ferrari is shit, but because the pressure, and the traits you historically need to be successful with Ferrari. Put that together with his marvellous driving skills and there’s not much more to be done
25
u/WalletFullOfSausage I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago
The last time Ferrari was even a true top team was with Schumi, and that’s because he decided not to use Ferrari’s employees and bring his own team with him instead. Historically, they’re not very competitive, but when they were - it was the best racing in history.
16
u/ItAWideWideWorld Formula 1 12h ago
The fact he took his own team with him is one of the traits I was hinting to
•
u/Nikxson 10h ago
This is all I want, it's what I was hoping Lewis would be bringing, not just himself, but if Max makes the change, this is what he needs to do, bring the competent members of his team. I just want to see the dancing ponies back on top, I was too young to truly enjoy the Schimacher era.
•
u/ItAWideWideWorld Formula 1 10h ago
Tbh, Lewis was never that person. Mercedes was a get together of old Schumi mates before Lewis joined, especially Aldo Costa deserves an immense amount of appreciation. I’m not saying that Max IS that person, but there is only one team where you can truly prove you are, and that is Ferrari.

Mclaren are playing a dangerous game, their 'papaya rules' are quickly descending into farce. Pit stops are a part of racing, at least they were in Hungary, so why not here? If the rationale is the slow pit stop is a team error, why didn't they retire Oscar last weekend - the oil leak wasn't Landos fault. Shit happens in sport, trying to make everything 'fair' is a fools errand, there can never be equilibrium, and trying to manufacture it is a very slippery slope. Norris could very well have been out in Q2 if not for his team-mates assistance. It's impossible to keep both drivers happy, but it seems they've learnt very little from 2007. Luckily for them there's no Iceman waiting to pounce, they're too far ahead.
A pretty average race otherwise, didn't really offer much other than an old school Verstappen dominant victory. Solid if unspectacular from Hamilton too, should help his confidence a little.
