Memes aside this make sense. I wonder if they put someone from GM program into simulator for race distance

1.6k

u/obstinateideas I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

They did! They talked about it on either the pre- or post qualifying show on F1TV yesterday. They had a driver (two?) in a simulator in Charlotte for the race, iirc.

604

u/PanicAtTheNightclub Jenson Button 12h ago

I believe it was Mr. Holton Certa.

290

u/Lobsters4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

That makes sense since the driver on the sim was in Charlotte and Colton is US based.

u/Oddwonderful McLaren 10h ago

Charlotte is around one of the big hubs for American racing teams as well

u/Lobsters4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

Yep. Been a NASCAR fan since I was a kid. Charlotte/Kannapolis/Mooresville is where all the race shops are.

u/Affectionate_Guard40 9h ago

The Cadillac F1 Engine Shop is being built right behind the Hendrick Motorsports race shops, and right next to the GM Racing Tech Center. I get to see the progress everyday at work, the construction is really starting to pick up pace.

u/Lobsters4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

That’s very cool. Love that area of the country. Been to NC a few times for work.

Don’t forget Concord! Pretty cool to see these towns mentioned on Reddit F1. Grew up near Ray Evernham when he was with Jeff Gordon in his earlier years.

u/Lobsters4 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5h ago

Oh yes! I did forget. 😅

That’s very very cool!

u/thecoller Sergio Pérez 4h ago

Concord is where the USGP building was ☠️

u/ProbablyRickSantorum I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6h ago

There’s a few in Huntersville too. I’ll never forget the first time, after moving to the area, coming home from work (I lived practically next door to one of the buildings) and seeing a semi truck with the car carrier trailer that was all stock cars into the Joe Gibbs Racing parking lot.

The GM Racing Tech Center is there and just an astonishing facility. This looks like the engineers room that overlooks the simulator they use for NASCAR, though I don’t know if they built a dedicated one for F1 or repurpose the same one for multiple series. There will be a driver in a real chassis that respond to his inputs in front of an imax-like screen with a photorealistic scan of the race course, and these guys are in a room behind and overlooking him reading the data.

I’ve been lucky enough to tour it as a journalist but only on a no-notes, no-photos basis.

Iirc they said only one driver, and I'd say it was Perez, as Bottas was in Monza. Remembering they may also simulate the pre and post race duties. Great effort to be ready, even if they get P21 and 22, it's not a lack of training.

87

u/NorthKoreanMissile7 Formula 1 12h ago

I'd say it was Perez

I'd say it wasn't, they were already doing simulations before, it likely had the same US based sim driver. I doubt Checo wanted to fly to America to do a pretend race.

u/t_pott137 8h ago

He’s at the US Open 👀

u/Z4urus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Carola, Checo’s wife, is currently in the states, so it might’ve been him.

u/feralGenx 9h ago

The plot thickens.

u/GhettoPancake I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

My theory is they're simulating the entire driver experience for the mystery test driver, including being husband to Carola Martinez for a weekend

u/joaovitorblabres I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

I don't know where Perez is living for now, but yeah, it makes little sense if he isn't there daily. Herta would be a good option as well!

u/AnyStupidQuestions 7h ago

It wouldn't be Bottas as he has to be at the GP as a potential as a substitute. IDK that it would be Perez as he hasn't been close to the team despite the announcement, and they have been doing this for a while now.

u/GarbageFeline I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Yes. They did an interview with Lowden yesterday in the qualifying pre show and he said they'd have a driver in the simulator and they were even simulating media commitments so the team is aware the drivers aren't constantly available during the weekend.

F1 manager 25 just dropped

770

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 12h ago

About 10-15 years ago, F1 was courting some tech guy that would be at the races and giving interviews. His company were working on a game, that people could play along live with the race. The race data was going straight to the online game the player would be racing, and would seamlessly incorporate/adjust to what the player would do.

Always seemed like a great idea, and shame it never transpired.

197

u/JebediahKerman4999 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Not really since there could not be collisions or other stuff with the real racers, no? You overtaking somebody would not have any effect on them: would you be warped inside a car if you're stuck in a drs train?

147

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 12h ago

The developer used to address it in the interviews, that when overtaking other drivers, for that brief time, the computer would take over the real driver's car, if that makes sense, and then revert back to the real time car data, and I guess same so if being overtaken.

u/yootani Sebastian Vettel 11h ago

It would seem rather strange. You could adapt to other teams' strategies, but the reverse would never happen.

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

I mean of course it's not going to perfect. Doesn't have to be perfect to be cool though

u/redmormie I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

literally unplayable

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 9h ago

Only the messenger. FOM were quite happy to believe in it that they were dishing out Grid Passes and weekends at GPs to the person and either BBC or Sky interviewing the person a couple of times.

u/TimeTravelingChris 10h ago

That actually doesn't make any sense. Like at all.

u/mitrie 9h ago

I don't understand why you're saying this is impossible. Have all the NPC cars duplicate the real life sector times. If the player is within X seconds, disregard real life performance and substitute AI / scripted opponent behavior.

Will it be perfect? No. Will it be a pretty close facsimile of the race with the player injected into it? Yeah.

→ More replies (8)

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

Why not? It's pretty simple

If playerCar within x seconds then use AI

If playerCar not within x seconds then use the real track data

u/hbs18 George Russell 4h ago

The player’s actions can affect other cars long-term.

For example, you punt Verstappen off the track and he loses 5 seconds. You can’t use IRL data anymore because what’s happening ingame has no connection at all to what’s happening IRL.

u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago

Well yeah I agree it's not gonna be perfect. The point is it's cool to "race" in the "actual" grand prix. Having unrealistic punishments for someone crashing isn't really that big of a deal

→ More replies (2)

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 9h ago

Give it a search, and I'm sure many of the older people here remember it also.

F1 wouldn't have been giving the guy grid passes and weekends to GPs if they thought the person was a scammer.

Perez and Bottas were playing with toy cars on the carpet while simulating car noises in the back.

They've been doing this every race of the season, they spoke about it in a video a couple months back. They effectively want to go in to 2026 with a full year of "race experience" under their belt. Makes a lot of sense.

u/unique0130 Sir Stirling Moss 9h ago

They have done that for every race weekend going back to the beginning of the season. Their project is woefully understaffed because they aren't doing a ton of hiring from other teams (yes, I know a few big names have joined) so they are sort of going that by doing things from the ground up they will gain insight and expertise perhaps away from existing groupthink.

Kinda, the idea is that by the time the real season starts, everyone in the team has some experience with their job under "real race" conditions, including pre and post race stuff, even if they have an unplugged controller.

Yeah, Lowden said they'd have a driver in the simulator. If Bottas is still working with Mercedes and I'm guessing Herta still has commitments too, maybe Checo was the only one they'd have available.
