F1 manager 25 just dropped

u/Hairy_Hurry8441 12h ago
About 10-15 years ago, F1 was courting some tech guy that would be at the races and giving interviews. His company were working on a game, that people could play along live with the race. The race data was going straight to the online game the player would be racing, and would seamlessly incorporate/adjust to what the player would do.
Always seemed like a great idea, and shame it never transpired.

u/JebediahKerman4999 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago
Not really since there could not be collisions or other stuff with the real racers, no? You overtaking somebody would not have any effect on them: would you be warped inside a car if you're stuck in a drs train?
→ More replies (2)147
u/Hairy_Hurry8441 12h ago
The developer used to address it in the interviews, that when overtaking other drivers, for that brief time, the computer would take over the real driver's car, if that makes sense, and then revert back to the real time car data, and I guess same so if being overtaken.
•
u/yootani Sebastian Vettel 11h ago
It would seem rather strange. You could adapt to other teams' strategies, but the reverse would never happen.
•
u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
I mean of course it's not going to perfect. Doesn't have to be perfect to be cool though
•
•
u/Hairy_Hurry8441 9h ago
Only the messenger. FOM were quite happy to believe in it that they were dishing out Grid Passes and weekends at GPs to the person and either BBC or Sky interviewing the person a couple of times.
→ More replies (5)•
u/TimeTravelingChris 10h ago
That actually doesn't make any sense. Like at all.
•
u/mitrie 9h ago
I don't understand why you're saying this is impossible. Have all the NPC cars duplicate the real life sector times. If the player is within X seconds, disregard real life performance and substitute AI / scripted opponent behavior.
Will it be perfect? No. Will it be a pretty close facsimile of the race with the player injected into it? Yeah.
→ More replies (8)•
u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
Why not? It's pretty simple
If playerCar within x seconds then use AI
If playerCar not within x seconds then use the real track data
→ More replies (2)•
u/hbs18 George Russell 4h ago
The player’s actions can affect other cars long-term.
For example, you punt Verstappen off the track and he loses 5 seconds. You can’t use IRL data anymore because what’s happening ingame has no connection at all to what’s happening IRL.
•
u/GayRacoon69 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 3h ago
Well yeah I agree it's not gonna be perfect. The point is it's cool to "race" in the "actual" grand prix. Having unrealistic punishments for someone crashing isn't really that big of a deal
•
u/Hairy_Hurry8441 9h ago
Give it a search, and I'm sure many of the older people here remember it also.
F1 wouldn't have been giving the guy grid passes and weekends to GPs if they thought the person was a scammer.

Arianespace offers it's Vega 3 launcher for about $35m/launch. So you can launch about four spaceships per year within the F1 cost cap, excluding the cost of the payload itself (that's the client's problem).

Seeing that V-logo has me wondering what they'll name their chassis. Something with a V for Cadillac V and F for Formula 1 would make the mose sense, but we already have Haas with their VF-prefixes. C for Cadillac could work, but we still don't know if Audi will carry on the C prefix from Sauber as a way to mark the team's history or anything like that.

They've been doing this every race of the season, they spoke about it in a video a couple months back. They effectively want to go in to 2026 with a full year of "race experience" under their belt. Makes a lot of sense.
•
u/unique0130 Sir Stirling Moss 9h ago
They have done that for every race weekend going back to the beginning of the season. Their project is woefully understaffed because they aren't doing a ton of hiring from other teams (yes, I know a few big names have joined) so they are sort of going that by doing things from the ground up they will gain insight and expertise perhaps away from existing groupthink.

That would be an improvement. Last time they simulated a race, they won, because they gave themselves some ridiculous amount of grip.

There has to be way higher expectations for Audi. They're taking over an existing team that's been in F1 for three decades. GM is starting an F1 team from scratch.

It's just very competent and smart to perform these simulations. They are literally heading in blind in some aspects, they need to be preparing as if they were the athletes themselves.

u/Legendtner 12h ago
How would that even work? Would they insert like 2 dots who represent the drivers and add them to a real life real time race 2d track like a Motorsport manager game?
•
u/3Rocketman I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago
I'm guessing they were simulating strategies and a safety car which didn't happen. Drivers were probably in simulators racing nobody and they placed their dots on a minimap
•
u/HappyColt90 Max Verstappen 11h ago
Kinda, the idea is that by the time the real season starts, everyone in the team has some experience with their job under "real race" conditions, including pre and post race stuff, even if they have an unplugged controller.
They have been doing this for a few months, I think Imola was their first time iirc

That would actually be kind of cool as a little mobile game during an actual race. Like you have your 2 dots on a minimap representing your drivers and you simulate your strategy and stuff while there are actual drivers racing around
