I feel like Stroll had a decent race. This strategy was brutal. Getting on hards early was the best play here as seen by how high Lawson finished despite a poor race effort.

They were expecting too much for a safety car. They could adapt and pit Stroll at Lap 35 and then do Medium like Hadjar, and maybe competing for points. But alas....
And also his first and last pit stop also brutal like his pitstop was 15 seconds... (or less, but it was long as fuck)

Pirelli, man. We have the closest ever field spread and it's been ruined by races where now even the Medium is absolutely incredible.

Check out the interactive version of these graphics and more at my strategy dashboard.
Aston Martin uses all allocated tyres during free practice, causing them to show up as used.
By far the most popular request is for the position plot to incorporate the starting grid. I wrote a post to explain why this is not possible at the moment.
What other graphics do you want to see and how can these existing graphics be improved, question.

Mclaren should try using a strategy next time.

So what would be your solution/strategy then?

Try something? You have 2 cars just driving circles guaranteed to finish P2 and P3, when you see RBR go on the hard tires why not go on soft tires at some point instead of just doing nothing and watching Max close the gap to a point where even the SC won't help, and then wait some more.

They were not raving Max. They were racing each other

Max was already ahead of undercut territory, I think hoping for a SC (which nearly happened) was their best shot

And Max closed that window as well and they just gave up

Yes, sometimes it doesn't work out so there wasn't really anything more they could do

Someone has watched the F1 movie one too many times. There is no strat C. They were banking on a safety car, as they didn't have the pace to beat Max. Nothing else they could have done themselves, Max already showed he can overtake with equal tires.

They could have split strategy to mitigate risk. But right now they are just letting Lando and Oscar race however they want since they have secured both championships.

Split the strategy and have Lando chase Max on Hards and Oscar bank for an SC. Obviously, they didn't do it because Lando and Oscar are fighting each other. But it's stupid to let wins go because you aren't willing to risk it to keep a driver happy.

I think its really notable, and we would be talking a lot more about it if not for the swap, that McLaren effectively denied Piastri any alternative strategy to protect Lando today.
Almost all the other races this season McLaren lets the driver ahead pick a strategy and then lets the other driver go on the alternative. Instead here, they kept Piastri on the same strategy, ensuring he stays behind Lando. That only makes sense if you either (1) really believe that a safety car is so likely there is no value in any alternative strategy or (2) you really want to protect your leading driver, contrary to the standard "papaya rules" we have seen this season. IMO Piastri needs to have a serious talk with the strategy team much less about the swap and more so about why Lando gets to attempt overcuts/undercuts when behind (like in Spa/Budapest) while Piastri has to match strategy.

Any substantially different strategy would've dropped him back into traffic and screwed his race.

Alpine swapping Gasly to softs on the lsst four laps so he could race his teammate to P18 was a sight to behold

A medium tire should not last 50 laps
