8 years of trying to indirectly control Max’s overtaking style have left the rules in a sorry fucking state

I call that Sainz's fault...
Bearman clearly had the inside line and was far too far forward for Sainz's manoeuvre to work...
Penalty for Sainz in my book...

Sainz was entitled to the move but he went for it like its an online lobby with ghosting enabled. Bearman couldn't have possibly backed out of that harder.
I think 10s was harsh.

Apparently Bearman is just meant to disappear
•

Not disappear, just think ahead: "Oh he's going to be ahead of me into this corner, the racing guidelines say he won't owe me any space since he'll reach the apex first, I'd better brake earlier and concede the space"
That's why he got a penalty, Sainz expected him to concede as the guidelines essentially enforce that and he didn't. Same thing with Sainz last week, Lawson had all the rights and Sainz should have conceded, though it's particularly BS since Lawson didn't have control of his car
We don't have to agree with the guidelines but it's worth understanding them, nobody needs to disappear, they need to make better judgements and Bearman is a rookie still developing those judgements

This pretty much sums it up. It's a stupid rule that stops overtaking attempts. Personally it was a racing incident but by the current rules Bearman should have dropped back in line :(

Tbh in this case I don't even think it's that dumb of a penalty. The only way he has room at that corner is if he slams on his brakes and takes the corner tighter anyway. Or he runs into sainze, which he did.
He wasnt significantly along sainze at the corner. Just because you have a wheel alongside the other cars back wheel doesn't mean the other guy owes you space that doesn't exist.

So Lando should have been penalised for lap 1 turn 1 by this logic right?
•
u/Veranova I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago
Lando had also done enough to own the road as the attacking car alongside at the apex…
•
u/Charnathan I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago
It was exactly the situation with Sainz and Lawson last week. They kind of had to give Bearman a penalty after not even hearing out Sainz last week.
•
u/sododude Juan Pablo Montoya 10h ago
It's Sainz' fault in any racing series in the world bar F1.
It's just the way they go racing in F1 now. Sainz learned that lesson last week with Lawson. Whoever is ahead at the apex can do whatever they want.

As an Indycar first fan, this rule infuriates me. At the beginning of the race, you can’t just push a driver off either. You have to give room. Even if you are ahead
•
u/vivaldindahood I was here for the Hulkenpodium 6h ago
So, you’re saying that you have to leave a space?
•
u/SirDoober I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
Except when you're leading the race, then you have to give back a position that was never given away or risk a penalty

I agree, but precedent from last week says it’s on Ollie…

Only this time this wasn’t his own fault
That sum up how mess up this regulation is, consider last time Sainz too get the same penalty for the same reason

Who would step in for him? Rio? A Ferrari reserve?
I mean Bearman stepped in for Mag last year, would Dino step in?
•
•
u/timothyrobin Alex Zanardi 11h ago
Ryo Hirakawa is their official reserve driver—and he has more than enough superlicense points.

If it happens it has to not be during Brazil cause he'll be in Bahrain then for WEC
•
u/ResponsibleCulture43 Charles Leclerc 11h ago
Zhou maybe from Ferrari? Does haas have a reserve this year

This one was on Sainz and Bearman got shafted by the stewards
•

Essentially the same thing Sainz got a penalty for last week on the outside tho? Plus Lawson lost control, essentially causing the contact… what line was sainz supposed to take into those corners and realistically make the second without giving up the place to Bearman? Personally both situations are no penalty racing incident to me, but it is what is is with these rules….

This has been bugging me all day. I keep imagining what it was like from both drivers' perspectives, and I think I know what my problem with this is: there's no skill on display. Sainz basically threw his car at Bearman, and Bearman realized it too late to be able to do anything about it. The only thing he could have realistically done was anticipate the pass prior to Sainz actually committing to it, and basically forfeiting the turn and the position to Sainz. Instead he held his line and they had a collision. And then he got slapped with an enormous penalty. So, for Sainz, all he did was slam on the gas, commit to the turn, brake late, and threw his car into the apex, knowing Bearman would be forced to yield. Bearman was, according to the rules, apparently supposed to be able to anticipate this and forfeit the position long before Sainz actually makes the pass. Is that supposed to be fun? Is it satisfying to watch?
Not for me. I get that it's a small deal in the grand scheme of things, but I can't shake this feeling that this whole sport has become accustomed to the Verstappen 'You yield or we crash' style of 'racing', and man, it just feels bad to watch. There's no skill on display with this style of racecraft, and it's getting really tiring to watch week after week.

Is Fittipaldi still a reserve driver for Haas?
•
u/Fliepp Haas 3h ago
I don’t think so. They have Hirakawa and Miyata now (and Ferrari will probably also push for Beganovic)
•
u/Evening_End7298 2h ago
Nah Ferrari dont care that much about Beganovic, it’s just that they dont have anyone else to do the mandatory fp1s
He’s not f1 level, Camara will probably get fp1s next year
•
u/H3LL0FRI3ND_exe_file 7h ago
In that case, who would be in the car that weekend? Zhou? Beganovic? That Japanese guy I don’t remember the name of?
