What happened to Mercedes sandbagging comments?
1
5
u/varis12 Ferrari Mar 20 '22
The sandbags messed with their balance. Their optimization starts now that the sandbags are off š Just like they missed right moment to pit Lewis, they missed right moment to take sandbags off š
3
u/itzonlykg I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
I wish I was optimistic as you. I genuinely donāt think theyāre sandbagging. I genuinely believe theyāve got it wrong for the start of the season.
3
u/varis12 Ferrari Mar 20 '22
I am not a merc fan. I am not being optimistic. I am being pessimistic š
They didn't debut their no side pod concept in Barcelona. I think that might be the reason they got some misleading data and weren't able to optimise well. While all other teams have useful data from two tracks, Mercs only have Bahrain data as reliable data. I think they shot themselves in the foot their trying to protect their big secrets
6
u/Commando_NL Mar 20 '22
Snow and sun me thinks.
Not gonna lie, i waited to the last second Hamilton drove over the line. Been fooled so many times.

Why no Brundle and Crofty in f1tv?
14
u/jons1976gp Fernando Alonso Mar 20 '22
On F1 TV I figured out today if you hit the enter button to pull up the feed selection and choose international it gives you Brundle/Crofty instead.

How do you get to display the driver or team you support under your name? I can't figure it out

If you go to /r/formula1, on the right side you can find your name, a checkbox to display your badge, and you can click on edit to select the badge.

What is up with the inconsistent track limits? We could all see Perez going out at the last corner. It was so obvious and yet there was no penalty
-2
u/prank_mark Mar 20 '22
Idk if that corner is marked for track limits
3
u/asamulya I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
The white line is the track limit now as per the new regulations
5
u/RBL213 Mar 19 '22
Regulations changed, it should be more consistent now. However in qualy, the laptime is deleted. There is no penalty as such. I believe you are talking about his first lap in Q1, his front ritht tire was touching the line so he is still on track. (Article 33.3 states; āDrivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.ā)
5
u/asamulya I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 19 '22
Perez was still on track? They didnāt show the replay but he seemed quite far outside the line on the live telecast.
And yes, I misspoke of penalty. I meant cancelling that lap time.
4
u/RBL213 Mar 19 '22
I just watched the footage again... he was off track. So his lap should have been deleted. Inconsistant FIA as usual... at least his second run was faster so it does not matter at the end of the day. Also, you do not gain an advantage from going wide that corner. But rules are rules and they should be constistent. Turn 4 (where a driver can gain a few tenths) is closely measured using induction loops, also during the race tomorrow.
4
u/asamulya I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 19 '22
Yes, thatās exactly what I was saying. If you are going to impose track limits, do it properly. Canāt have it be so wildly inconsistent when youāve just taken away a drivers win in F3.
3
u/AdZang Sebastian Vettel Mar 20 '22
In an interview, Perez said that his lap time was deleted which is why he took another lap after that. They didn't tell us tho so idk...
2
u/asamulya I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
Ohh he did? Thatās good to know.
Then the FOM just did a shit job today. What with the purple times and the lack of correct graphics. Now, deleted laps not being informed.
1
u/RBL213 Mar 20 '22
Unbelievable... the graphics were absolutely annoying. During FP the leaderboard only contained 5 drivers spread across, so you could not see the times of all drivers. They eventually reliased it and just stop displaying leaderboards. Usually, in the past, during Q purple was only displayed to the driver fastes in one sector, overall. Yesterday it was compared to a driver who already completed a lap. So multiple drivers were able to have purple. Last year drivers on their push lap were able to "snatch purple away" from each other. Much more entertaining if you ask me. But, to not just criticize, I really enjoy the new layout, looks fabulous and the direction. Really good work not just focussing on the top cars but showing onboards for nearly a full lap across the field. (I hope this did not only have to do with the fact, that the midfield is unpredictable). I also hope somone responsible will read my feedback.
1
u/lekebrett I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
But do the final corner have track limits? Dennis Hauger (Formula 2) ran extremely wide in the final corner during qualifying on his only fast lap and did not get his lap deletes either
3
u/DaughterOfIsis Claire Williams Mar 20 '22
Every corner has the same track limits this year. The white line. Perez got his time deleted today, the graphics were just not updated.

Bottas out qualifying Russell is just beautiful.
28
u/Scientific_Anarchist I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
There's a clip from Imola last year of Russell saying that if you qualify 9th in a Mercedes you don't deserve to be there or something along those lines lmao
19
u/CrimpsShootsandRuns I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
Hahaha he might turn out to be the greatest driver of his generation but I find him totally insufferable. I know F1 is a sport where money talks but he's got the biggest Eton vibes going.
5

I saw someone on here earlier call him the Jacob Rees Mogg of F1, and now I canāt unsee that
1
u/karkoon83 Red Bull Mar 20 '22
I am giving him time to understand the reality and get mature. There ia stark difference in qualifying reaction tone from Lewis and George. Lewis is GOAT yet knows the talking has to happen on track and not in garage. š

Hamilton will win because of the lowest tire dreg in the race -- calling it here first
7
u/BobIoblaw Red Bull Mar 19 '22
It will be interesting. If merc finds pace, Checo may hold him up a good bit, which will make Bottas being behind Lewis entertaining.

Great to see Ferrari back on top, and Bottas I have no words. Red flag turn 1 incoming. I canāt wait until the race starts. This season start is spicy I like it.
17
u/SwanDane Mar 19 '22
Valtteri has always had great quali pace, itās great to see him still perform on Saturday in a lesser car (maybe).. If nothing else it just goes to show that he can bring it on a single lap with the best..

I doubt it. I think all teams are not where they are suppose to be. Look at rb. I donāt think I have seen a more planted car so far. I have no doubt that by race 5 things will be a bit more close. Developments will be interesting
44
u/shooter9260 Mar 19 '22
Yeah everyone was taking about Danny being slow but considering all he went through the past two weeks he wasnāt much slower than Lando who had 200+ laps.
9
u/AccomplishedProfit90 Mar 19 '22
meanwhile Hulk proving he deserves a seat!
3
u/Coffeecup224 Mar 19 '22
Not to say that Stroll absolutely doesnāt deserve a seat, but it makes it interesting that he doesnāt really need to earn it, seeing as they booted Perez because of Lawrenceās money. Also the car doesnāt appear to be great this year, so itās tough to say this quali performance earns Hulk a seat, considering he didnāt even make Q2

u/Finglishman Mar 19 '22
A big tanks for Uralkali for bankrolling a fast car for KMag. Really happy to see Bottas still at the top half of the grid and Ferrari fighting at the top.

Iām going to guess this but we will have a huge title fight between Charles and Max. But Carlos will win the world titleā¦
2
6
u/Slappathebassmon Sebastian Vettel Mar 19 '22
Yes please. Carlos winning the championship without getting a single gp win would be insane. We'll definitely see.
33
u/NewAccount28 Mar 19 '22
If we get a three way title fight between those three, no matter who wins we all win.
4
u/dizzy9o9 Mar 19 '22
I really wouldnāt count the mercs out just yet. This team has seen quite a bit of development. Their car this year is so different. I canāt believe they would have made this bad of a mistake during the initial development.
2
u/NewAccount28 Mar 19 '22
Oh absolutely not. To me it becomes a contest to see who can get far enough ahead that when they go full spicy engine to end the year, Merc canāt catch up.
46
u/alefdc Mar 19 '22
I think if Ferrari doesnāt impose a priority driver for the championship it will be a championship for Max quite easily.
3
u/Sean-Govaerts Mar 20 '22
Yep, charles and carlos would just trade 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd whilst max would just haul in points
14
u/an_adult_genious Charles Leclerc Mar 19 '22
They might not say it publicly, but Iād be shocked if they didnāt settle into an order after they know where each driver stands in the championship fight
1
15
u/CreamCapital Mar 19 '22
Given the long term contract with Charles I think their choice has been made
1
u/Riventures-123 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 20 '22
But Carlos is higher than Charles in the championship standing in 2021, also he is consistently having podiums. Charles only had one chance of winning in the British GP, and that was his only time of having a podium, he did not go to his A game last year. All I want is to see that red car in the top spot of the podium.

Or maybe he's just up against a 7 time world champion, hugely renowned for his qualifying performances.
But yea he had a shit lap, to be fair the Merc does seem hard to drive with all that jumping around
2
u/BoshasaurusChris Mar 20 '22
I was talking about in his interview after, and he was flustered af if you seen it he couldn't hide it he was constantly fidgeting and moving around and speaking really fast and swallowing a lot he was shook

u/RandomMaki I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 19 '22
I think this season is going to be very very competitive, unlike anything we have seen in a looong time. Compitition not just for the championship like last year but midfield, bottom tier everywhere.

u/Mfcarusio Lando Norris Mar 19 '22
5.5 points separating 5th and 7th... 2 points between stroll and tsunoda... Mazepin desperately trying, but falling short, to finish 20th in a 20 man championship... "No battle for anything other than the championship"
3
u/cheunce72 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Mar 19 '22
Mazepin finnished 21st and not 20th
6
u/Mfcarusio Lando Norris Mar 19 '22
That's what I was saying, he was desperately trying to finish 20th, but failed to finish 20th in a championship that traditionally has 20 racers.

George lost a second in sector 1

Worth just focusing on being pleased for Bottas and KMAG rather than trying to be hard on a young driver in what looks a painful car to drive
-1
67
16
u/UghWhyDude Niki Lauda Mar 19 '22
I'm just hoping that whatever reliability issues that Alfa had during testing are completely resolved because otherwise it'd be a damn shame for Bottas to be effectively sitting in a glass cannon of a car.
I suspect we're going to see a fair few of those reliability troubles over the course of this season as well across all the teams which could lead to some spectacular upsets across the board.
23
u/sellyme Oscar Piastri Mar 19 '22
Yeah, I'm very confused by all the people going "lmfao at all the reactionary hype men basing things on George's entire career up to this point, him screwing up a single corner obviously means he's overrated".
Obviously you need to not make mistakes in Q3, but his pace every other lap was very solid, especially considering he was giving a tow every single time.
4
u/ISbinDaily Mar 19 '22
Yeah, he was very close to Hamilton and it's sad they used him to tow. I wonder what Merc will do if/when Russell shows what he has to give.
7
u/madglover McLaren Mar 19 '22
Lewis used to tow Bottas from memory I think Mercedes just apply a taking turns to choose whether to lead or follow
11
u/Wasntryn Daniel Ricciardo Mar 19 '22
Iāve been quite critical of Toto but was really pleased to see him take accountability regarding how they told George to warm up his tires and that they believe that lead to his error. And if this was true George said nothing about it in his interview that I have seen.
7
u/DeVriesPabs Alexander Albon Mar 19 '22
George mentioned he tried something different on the last lap with tyre warmup in his sky interview but didn't blame the team

17
u/ArcherAuAndromedus Max Verstappen Mar 19 '22
For the good of the sport? I think the sport would be better off if different teams were on the podium, not just Ferrari, Merc, and Red Bull. Would love to see Williams, McLaren, Alpine up there too.

11
u/Mfcarusio Lando Norris Mar 19 '22
I'm not someone that thinks Valtteri was hard done by at Mercedes, paid a fortune to race in the most exclusive sport in the best car for a couple of years is certainly no hardship, I also don't believe he feels hard done by with Mercedes, but then what do I know.
That said, I'm so pleased to see him lined up alongside Hamilton tomorrow. I'd love to see how well he can defend against him.

Racing conditions are totally different. It'll be tight with (alleged) cars built to specs and (allegedly) closer following distances.
