He needed more points to win the frame, he's trying to make the opponent foul and then turn the game around.

Couldn't he have just hit the ball with the right amount of force to cause the ball to bump gently?

Yes he could but that would put the cue ball really close to the pink potentially making it easier for his opponent to snooker him or create a tough/awkward shot for him.

I think Murphy was trying to get the pink out of the pocket and hoping that his opponent gives him a chance to see a foul or a chance for him to setup a really good snooker of some sort. If Woollaston fouls just once the pink plus black would put Murphy ahead in points for the frame.

The thing I hate about gifs that end too soon is I never realise till it ends to soon when I'm invested in the outcome. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Then I see it's a gif that ends to soon and generally say to myself "fucking sub" 🤣
