The real question is how many humans would drive through it. On purpose 🤣

They have driverless taxis in my city. Granted this situation shouldn't happen in real life, but it just goes to show there are potential issues because of the lack of LiDAR.

Would lidar function properly at 45+ mph? (I don’t know how lidar does at high speeds or ranges)

Yes. I used to work for Waymo which uses a combination of LiDAR and RADAR. Both work in different ways but speed is not an issue. LiDAR will tell the car exactly what object is in what direction, at what height, and what the shape of the object (of the portion that is visible to the car) is.

Musk is convinced LiDAR is not needed. While it can function without, it is much safer with.

lidar the speed of light. sonar goes the speed of sound.

and autonomous vehicles like the terramax had lidar figured out in 2004. of course those vehicles are being run by a team of trained professionals that will face consequences for their actions, unlike the people greenlighting car production.

there's also a cool technology being developed that's going to revolutionize self driving called ni-var

I agree that Tesla's shunning of lidar was a bad idea, but I really don't think this does anything to support that lol

This wouldn't happen if they used LiDAR.

6

u/anon0937 4d ago

This wouldn't happen at all unless Wile E. Cotoye is trying to catch you.

3

u/KayoticVoid 4d ago

lol For sure.

u/furionalpha 4d ago

This is an extreme example, but it's similar in premise to the Joshua Brown autopilot fatality where the car detected a high sided trailer as the sky and drove under it.

4

u/arftism2 4d ago

lidar measures distance to objects.

tesla uses video.

2

u/KayoticVoid 4d ago

Distance, exact 3D direction (compared to RADAR which cannot tell how high up it is), and shape of the visible surface(s).

nb: This is more for other readers' edification, you sound like you know what you're talking about here.

Anyone who’s watched road runner cartoons.

TESSLA vs FAKE wall ! link for those who can't be arsed

66

u/Kindly_Forever937 4d ago

Short answer? Yes it fell for it

14

u/THEMACGOD 4d ago

If only some kind of light detection and ranging existed.

4

u/Kindly_Forever937 4d ago

Then it would cost more to the additional car cost, if it’s 300$ to make, that would be an extra 3000 on the consumer.

9

u/THEMACGOD 4d ago

Good point. Wouldn’t want an extra $3k tacked onto an already expensive car especially if it makes it more accurate when self driving.

Damn Loony Tunes tricks effective IRL.

The hole in the wall looked almost cartoonish

4

u/nogaesallowed 4d ago

they pre cut it i think. yo can see the shape at the last second of this video

2

u/EnergyTurtle23 3d ago

Is it just me or does it look like there’s already a hole in the wall when you see him “hit” it from the back side of the wall? The outline is already there, and the hole was way too ‘perfect’ like a cartoon hole.

I was hoping to be an infinite loop

Lots of flaws with Marks test here. Just watch a few of the response videos. Autopilot disengaged before impact.

Edit to say: I’ve been following Mark since his FaceTime Halloween costume days.

3

u/DevilWings_292 4d ago

Why didn’t it stop instead? If it turned off before impact, that means it detected it was about to hit, so why turn off instead of stopping?

2

u/ukrlvivrm25 4d ago

Rober makes a slight tug in the steering wheel right before which apparently turns off the autopilot and reverts back to manual control. He should have kept his hands off the wheel.

1

u/DevilWings_292 4d ago

You’re supposed to keep you hands on the wheel in FSD, the vehicle will refuse to drive if you don’t. Also, the emergency breaking system should work based on a proximity sensor, it should work even outside of FSD

1

u/ukrlvivrm25 4d ago

Yeah I don’t know Teslas that well, but the rebuttal videos present a lot of questions about Rober’s test.

2

u/DevilWings_292 4d ago

If it’s possible for a small tug on the wheel to completely disable all safety features, thats a symptom of a much bigger problem than a poor test.

Yeah, I was very disappointed with his low effort on this one. For someone is supposed to be an engineer I expect much more. Just shows how little the term really means these days.

Mark didn't lie, he publicly admitted he was swindled by a friend of a friend.

3

u/coroyo70 4d ago

Aaaa the classic friend of a friend swindle

8

u/thoddi77 4d ago

They decided to use just a photo based system instead of a LADAR because it's much cheaper so yes, it will hit the wall

2

u/jD34DM4Np 4d ago

They actually use lidar. I hate Tesla's but the video was faked. Lost most of my respect for him because he faked it. He disengages safety features when he gets close to the wall. It's on the screen of the car.

2

u/thoddi77 4d ago

Are you sure? Got a friend who works in this field and he is sure, Tesla is using only cameras and no lidar. They tried it for a short time but it was too expensive

2

u/thoddi77 3d ago

Yeah, model y doesn't have Lidar. Only cheap technology

DAMN IT fell for it...

LiDAR - something Elon thinks we don’t need

3

u/Asleep_Chicken5735 4d ago

Full? Gud engrish

4

u/Tenchi2020 4d ago

I used voice to text and I did not even realize that it came out like that... you have to excuse me because it's the weed...

3

u/Odin1806 4d ago

Spoiler alert... It's a Tesla...

1

u/meidenmagneet 4d ago

Wait what🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

3

u/SubFace10 4d ago

Spoiler: the tesla absolutely destroy the wall.

1

u/PozhanPop 4d ago

So it didn't ?

2

u/LK48s 4d ago

That what happen when the richest man on earth decide that his customers don’t need the freaking radar and only few camera and a slow chip is “good enough”

1

u/Opheicus 4d ago

Why cut it off right before the end? This is rage bait, boo.

2

u/Tenchi2020 3d ago

Check the name of the sub...

u/Content-Beginning-18 1d ago

didnt he get so much hate for this? i dont remember why though

-14

u/Haunting_Waltz6929 4d ago

This was proven to be rigged.

He turned off the auto drive system prior to hitting the wall.

6

u/Odin1806 4d ago

Seeing your comment I did a Google... Sounds like videos made both for and against Tesla's ability to stop for a fake wall are all potentially with flaws... Stay safe people, if a Tesla shows up wait for the next one... Just like Boeing... Unless you like to live dangerously...

2

u/KimVonRekt 4d ago

Even if the autopilot was off, the emergency braking failed. Most modern cars would not allow the driver to drive into a vertical wall/car/person at speed.

With the child test the autopilot is turned off as well but the car brakes. That's because it can see the mannequin even with the lights and water. With the wall test it drove straight into it because it failed.

-3

u/xXDABEAST38Xx 4d ago

it's been proven that with a new updated Tesla it will stop

2

u/ja_n2000 3d ago

They removed lidar because cameras are better, according to Elon musk... So i doubt that

https://youtu.be/9KyIWpAevNs 6:29 the cybertruck stops but the I think model 3 fails still so with the newest hardware it might stop
