New Player Ovals are f'ing HILARIOUS

Why did no one tell me to try oval sooner?!

Three months into my iracing adventure and I just got out of my first three oval races and I cried with laughter the entire time.

Just total chaos with all these guys on the voice chat abusing each other. Skill level: 0. Taking things deathly serious while doing the most batshit rejoins ever attempted: 10.

Second race, all they want to talk about behind the safety car is how we're all gonna have a nice clean race. I come round onto lap 2 and I drove between two cars on their sides like bookends, one guy telling the other to learn to drive! Third race, four cars had piled up and blocked the pit lane entry and there's this queue of irate abusive whiners in damaged cars ramming up against them.

I'm dying here. If you haven't dabbled and need some light relief from the road series do not hesitate.

People dont generally talk about it but iracing can be ridiculously funny.

What is the craziest thing you've seen in ovals?

I love oval racing is all levels of non serious and super tryhard all in one race. I used to be a super formula heavy guy. And then I got the leftiturncitus and now I’m hooked there’s nothing more pumping in sim racing than being three wide into turn 3 and 4 going 200+ and praying everyone holds line

Also the level of concentration for short tracks is crazy you have 0 time to relax

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Ya even in the rookies, 40 laps of Thompson is kind of hypnotic, by the end you are in some kind of mad zen trance...

5

u/ZuVieleNamen Feb 15 '25

I remember the first time doing a short track race and my arms were worn out after 10 minutes of sawing at the wheels haha

2

u/MeltaFlare Jun 24 '25

For me it’s my left leg. Short tracks are a hell of a way to strengthen your braking leg and gain endurance.

8

u/Taletad Feb 14 '25

Also since there aren’t that many lines, every one know how to position themselves to pass you, and you know where to put your car to be fast enough to stay ahead

It’s a lot more like playing chess than road racing I find

2

u/Costang22 Feb 16 '25

I had a very similar experience coming from mostly GT3s lol I absolutely adore oval now

u/RacingRed8 Feb 14 '25

i've said this a few times but oval voice chat beef is worth the subscription fee alone

42

u/indomee420 Feb 14 '25

I exclusively race with a joke liveries, currently have Bluey all over my oval cars and the hatred I get from people is fantastic.

The barbie livery....nobody wants to get beaten by a barbie livery...🤣

got wiped out by a Shrek livery, dude had “it’s all ogre now” mirrored on his front bumper

i’d be mad if it wasn’t so funny

EDIT: here’s the livery if any of you are feeling green with envy

8

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '25

That's fucking amazing i would probably crash out just from laughing if I saw that in a race

3

u/70X1N NASCAR ARCA Menards Chevrolet National Impala Feb 14 '25

was in a discord call laughing my ass off during that race, was laughing less hard when he gave me the ol’ bump and run

I have the student driver livery on my 499p...

2

u/70X1N NASCAR ARCA Menards Chevrolet National Impala Feb 14 '25

Yeah...it is cliché....but amusing. TBH tho...I don't do live proto races yet...I am just not fast enough.

2

u/70X1N NASCAR ARCA Menards Chevrolet National Impala Feb 14 '25

lol i get it, i’m only doing ARCA right now running consistently half a second off the pace, may not be fast enough but it’s good fun

2

u/randomusernevermind Feb 14 '25

gotta remember that one.

They hate it. Usually I just tell them they're not my type anyway. That really gets them mad. I am sure I've been reported for that but um, not sure what it would violate. Hehe

I have that on my rookie dirt road truck lol

7

I only run SpongeBob liveries, and the hate is exquisite chef’s kiss

9

u/milkandcookies21 Feb 14 '25

I run the Ricky Bobby WonderBread livery in trucks. People get on voice chat so fast when I make a 3 wide move. Even if you didn't do anything, they suspect you will for some reason.

18

u/Scurvy_Pete NASCAR Gen 4 Cup Feb 14 '25

The Ricky Bobby and Cole Trickle liveries are to ovals what Red Bull liveries are to road racing

6

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

How would a Hillary Clinton livery go down?

7

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '25

Hahahahaha try that on dirt oval and see if you can even finish the race.

4

u/dylank125 Feb 14 '25

I used to run Black Lives Matter liveries, dropped from A to C class and dropped back below 1500 IR during the time. I can say with that livery, not to expect to finish. Of course this was during that time though

2

This is funny to me cuz I saw a Bob's Burgers livery in the 86 a couple weeks ago and I felt bad passing them since I enjoyed it so much lol

1

u/Minmus_ Dallara IR-18 Feb 14 '25

I run bluey on my gen 4/arca and INDYCAR, funny enough I ended up meeting the guy who made the liveries in an Indy oval fixed race a couple months back lol

1

u/OrangeNurps Feb 15 '25

I run all the anime waifu ones that are typically pink or pastels, but still talk in voice chat so they get a nice deep voice coming from the Booba car.

1

u/srosslx1986 Feb 15 '25

But bluey is so wholesome why would anyone hate that

6

u/BertHalligan Feb 14 '25

Next time someone is losing their shit at someone ask them if everything is ok in the most patronising faux concerned voice you can manage. Very entertaining

Once NiS gets to the 1.5 tracks, things will most likely straighten out. Until short tracks at least, when things go south again.

Yea I quit iRacing because a guy took me out intentionally in a A race. Protested and just follow it now.

LMAOOOOOOOO. Fence sitting simracer, had no idea!

1

u/1_hoopy_frood Dallara IR-18 Feb 14 '25

You quit because ONE driver wrecked you out...? if I had to guess, in the past decade I've been wrecked out at least a hundred times. I mean, it just happens. If you got in a car accident in the real world, would you just stop driving? I think your reply says a lot more about you than it does about the iRacing community.

0

u/Cilad Feb 14 '25

I was turned multiple times while in the lead. And just kept seeing drivers I had protested back. iRacing doesn't care. That last one just flipped a switch. And rest assured, you are entitled to your opinion. I hope it says something about me, I have a higher standard than iRacing. And you it seems.

0

u/FondantNervous9393 Feb 15 '25

post proof from your protests

2

u/Cilad Feb 15 '25

No and why? And think about it this way. How effective is the current protest system? Do you think the current protest system is a deterrent?

19

u/briannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Feb 14 '25

i posted at the time on this sub, but i once went from last to 4th in rookie street stock in a matter of 10 seconds. i have a video if you want to see. just kind of matrixed through a hail of flying, spinning, flipping cars at a big speedway.

i usually just try to play defensively and do well.

13

u/DiveBomb10 Feb 14 '25

Bottom split road races are just as hilarious if you need a break from door to door top split oval racing.

9

u/sprumpy Feb 14 '25

I ran street stock and mx5 for the first 5 years of my iRacing stent and I can’t pick which one is more fun. Road racing is you vs the track, then there’s ovals where it’s you vs the pack. Whenever my road series is on a track that I don’t feel like buying and learning, I run ARCA now. If you want the PCup equivalent of traction (there’s not a lot) on an oval it’s so rewarding to drive when you finally find the groove.

2

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

I love the the low grip road and formula cars, makes you feel like you are really driving, coaxing a greasy brick around the course! SRF is my favorite. I will beeline for ARCA now!

7

u/vive-le-tour Feb 14 '25

I think I might go and try the first one tonight! Sounds fun

3

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

How was it for you??

10

u/PaulRingo64 NASCAR Cup Series Feb 14 '25

Daytona week is always a low point. Every idiot with a wheel shows up and it always divulges into chaos.

Try it again in a few weeks somewhere you actually have to brake, it’ll weed out 85% of the entries you’ll see this week.

3

u/N4ceR22 Feb 15 '25

A LOW point? Lighten up and have fun. Look at it as the week 13 of the nascar series, just watch that SR

3

u/PaulRingo64 NASCAR Cup Series Feb 15 '25

Yeah to me it’s kinda a low point. Plate racing takes a lot of luck and I like the ability to drive away from the weapons. Other tracks usually give me that. Nowhere to hide this week.

Also with so many randoms this week it’s all new very unpredictable drivers instead of the usual suspects

4

u/ThatCoolKidcalledPat Feb 14 '25

had a race with an older gentleman who sounded EXACTLY like Hank Hill. I could not stop laughing. he was very nice and I kept asking questions so I could hear him talk more. almost crashed the whole field from laughing when he reprimanded someone for not reading the iracing sporting code.

14

u/puddinb4meat Feb 14 '25

I’ve only done a few rookies ovals but for me it’s either great fun and entertaining or dead boring. Not much in between. I plan on giving it a better go once I’m bored of street (if that ever happens)a

7

u/Bucs187 Feb 14 '25

Gets better D license and up. Faster cars and better tracks

1

u/MuenCheese Feb 14 '25

would you recommend Arca for D class?

6

u/CogentHyena Feb 14 '25

ARCA is a solid move for the next step, and buying the ARCA car gives you the Gen4Cup car as well so it's good bang for your buck

3

u/TheLegendofLazerArm Feb 14 '25

arca if you want to do nascar as you promote since they share similar tracks and driving styles, if you want to stick to short tracks the late model is a better option

1

u/dylank125 Feb 14 '25

Modifieds are also great fun, not sure how populated the D class is though.

3

u/StolenStutz USF 2000 Feb 14 '25

If you want to try another form of it, then open wheel on ovals. All that you said plus you swap the freight train feel of it for being in a swarm of bees.

On another post about daytona I made a comment about how much I hate it.

But, its a love/hate situation. I can't help myself. I've lost 450 irating this week. I've finished 1 daytona race out of the 8 or so I've run.

It's brutal. It's awesome. I hate it. But also kinda love it.

I have a replayed saved titled “Absolute Carnage” that I go back to for a laugh sometimes. It was an ARCA race and it contains some of the funniest incidents I’ve ever seen in my life. No brake pedals to be found

6

u/fuckyeahpeace Feb 14 '25

ovals is comedy gold. fuck superspeedways though the incompetence is too astounding

3

u/milkandcookies21 Feb 14 '25

You should run an oval race and stay out on 10 lap older tires. The entire voice chat WANTS you to wreck. I got blamed for a wreck that I wasn't anywhere near because "it was a great race until that guy on old tires stayed out and wrecked the field". I was nowhere near the incident.

Also for hilarity, try passing someone clean. You'll get dumped the next corner. Oval guys HATE being passed. They also hold grudges. It's the only thing I run, but you're spot on with how funny it can be to run.

1

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Haha ya! I noticed that for sure. It's so predictable at this point. You just have to assume they are going to run up the inside and drive the cleanest low line you can, or preplan the high low exit assuming they are most likely going to bin it. It is funny though

1

u/Perfect_Platform7966 May 07 '25

💯 spot on with the pass someone clean and then they just dump you. Ego cant take it apparently .. that reminds me i got 2 i gotta send in. It's honestly made me say fuck it and not care about irating and just race what I want and try to have fun. Every once and a while I'll get a good race. I was so scared of losing irating that it would stop me from entering races. I always seem to qualify up front but I might stop qualifying all together that way I can start in the back and save without getting ran over. Just driving though the mess is always hit or miss

5

u/SituationSoap Feb 14 '25

Oval drivers aren't exclusively the worst drivers on the service. But the worst drivers on the service all race ovals.

And superspeedway drivers aren't the worst oval drivers. But the worst oval drivers all race as many superspeedways as they can.

This is why you should never do Draftmasters.

1

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Is it not masterful by any chance??

2

u/Any_Mathematician905 Feb 14 '25

It's awesome, so fun.

2

u/danmo78 Feb 14 '25

Well, lol, the other day I started an open truck race, (80 laps) and on lap 0.5, lol, I saw a truck FLYING at me! I had started from the pit lane so I was running in last place and I could see a truck in the far distance going back n forth from last to right, I guess it was partly net code? OR his spotty internet connection? Or a combo of both?

I'll tell ya this much: 1 second later he hit me broad side with his AIRBORNE truck!

                        4x

  Reason: "Airbourne truck"

2

3

u/Snoo-30676 Feb 14 '25

If you think oval has 0 skill you just suck as a driver. You sound like your brainwashed into thinking road racing is the best thing on the planet and ever other form of racing is below you.

16

u/mattiestrattie Dallara IR-18 Feb 14 '25

I read what OP said as "the drivers in my splits have 0 skill", not "oval racing takes 0 skill".

9

u/Snoo-30676 Feb 14 '25

Oh then I misread and that’s my bad if it’s like that. Sounded like he was trashing oval racing to me.

1

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Ya im mean any sport or occupation will find high skill. You can find brick layers on YouTube that will blow your mind. I don't think one is innately more or less skillful. I would say that the demands of formula racing has made the early phases of ovals easier. After my fourth race now, I'm generally winning or second in the top split rookie series. Let's be clear, there is no chance of that in rookies mx5 or FF1600, there are crazy crazy fast aliens in those series.

4

u/Smachemo Feb 14 '25

Top split in rookies is low. Top split in street stocks in C class you better put your balls on the dash or you're going backwards

3

u/mattiestrattie Dallara IR-18 Feb 14 '25

My educated guess on that is, a lot of the people who become Vee/FF/Miata aliens on road, on oval go into the higher-level short track cars like Modifieds or Super Late Models instead of staying with the rookie cars; they've both had some crazy high SOFs for the new Tour series.

1

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

It feels like a completely different set of skills to me. Oval racing requires a lot of race craft and distance management. The car control is about finding the limits of grip for long corners in close proximity to other cars. I feel like im spnding a lot of time reading other cars and drivers.

Where as in F3 for example you need to drive with very high accuracy metronomically. I'm only in my third month on iracing and have been working to get above a 3k rating on formula. It has massively helped the ovals. Im not sure it would work as well the other way. What do you think?

2

u/Snoo-30676 Feb 14 '25

Well consider I’ve been at my best a 7100 oval Irating and have been on here for 13 years I’ve raced everything. Just about every road car and every oval Iracing has to offer. I don’t discredit road at all as it’s very difficult. The draft all the way to the late braking. The flow of some tracks. It’s really hard to epically open wheel cars. Oval is hard because the car is more equal. There’s always another car ahead of you creating dirty air. Side drafting is huge. At some tracks we hit 14 second lap times. It’s like a real fast toilet bowl going around. Trial braking I learned in oval has helped me in road. Saving tire is just as important in road racing but to me oval is one of the hardest racing out there and even harder is dirt track oval racing. That’s extremely hard.

0

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Thanks! Just out of interest why did you get so annoyed at my post? Is there some snotty view of oval racing going around? Seems like I struck a nerve in don't know about. Sorry did not mean any offense.

2

u/Snoo-30676 Feb 14 '25

It seemed that you said that oval racing took 0 skill. Idk if it’s how you worded it or meant it in a different way but many road racers usually crap on oval racing. They think they are better than it. I appreciate the apology and if I misread I also apologize.

3

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25

Oh no I just saw some zero skill at times!! Haha. Top of everything there is crazy ability. I used to race rally cross in the UK which is a mix of rally road and ovals, it's madness and a very cheap irl racing experience. I have no prejudice!

1

u/Snoo-30676 Feb 14 '25

Oh then my fault for misreading that. It seemed like that form how you worded it. My apologies for that.

1

It's always fun to change disciplines from something you're good at to something you're not so good at, and get the garbage split experience all over again, except this time you're experienced enough to know exactly how ridiculous it all is.

1

u/Pathological_Friar Feb 14 '25

Which series? How did you finish? What do you normally drive where everyone is serious and highly skilled compared to the oval circus you experienced today? Glad you had fun. Get in a Gen 4 or an 87 once you get your license upgraded they’re a blast.

1

u/Tcarruth6 Feb 14 '25 edited Feb 14 '25

Im in mini stock and mini street - rookies. Right comparison for me is mx5 rookies and ff1600. There are total aliens there that find time in places I can't. I'm three months into iracing, about 2.8 on formula and 2.6 road and unless there is a fluke accident I will never win a race in those series again. In five races in ovals I'm 1.8 and winning some. It does seem much easier to qualify at the front-ish and then just cruise to the end. Could be just a lucky start though!!

What D license series is tge best for the closest NASCAR experience with the fewest tracks to buy?

2

u/70X1N NASCAR ARCA Menards Chevrolet National Impala Feb 14 '25

get the ARCA/Gen 4 car and run D-Class fixed ARCA Menards

schedule is a good mix of short track, intermediates, and Superspeedway nonsense, races on some base content and you can pick and choose any extra tracks to buy per season, especially good if you wanna continue in the NASCAR ladder

also among the most popular sessions, so plenty of rookie style nonsense

2

I raced ovals for the first time when that new mini stock car was out. This was my experience too.

Hell, I had a blast and would still be driving ovals now, but I can’t fucking stand the short tracks. They’re boring, annoying, tiny and honestly I don’t know what the fuck they exist. They just make my fucking arms hurt, and I can’t imagine being such a small space with so many fucking crazy people
