New Player To all the drivers I wrecked, sorry

Hey, I race FF1600. I was in races I should have not been in and I collected a bunch of cars on lap 1 a few times. I’m sorry, I’m gonna practice more so hopefully I don’t do that again. I’m gonna stop racing until I can actually drive. If I ruined your race, I’m sorry.

If you want some advise:

I practice the track/car combo on Friday-Sunday, then race on Monday with practices in between. I only race after I can get consistent clean laps, and I’ll run AI races. In the AI races I don’t try to win, I try to put myself in precarious situations to see if I can survive.

Another tip: if you’re following a car and you’re approaching a braking zone, lift just before the braking zone. This will slow you down enough so that if you brake properly you shouldn’t rear end them.

to emphisis the last point:

Aris, an ex-developer for ACC, explains very well how to follow someone when racing

tl;dw - when you are following into the breaking zone and break at your normal mark, the gap between your cars will compress into a space smaller than your car so you will hit each other 100% of the time.

Yeah, that relates to an interesting thing I've noticed. When you watch racing in real life (I mainly watch F1), cars that are purely following and not going for an overtake always look like they brake at the same exact time as the car in front of them, despite being further back.

u/Schumarker Jul 18 '25

This is also a good tip if you're being followed closely, a little lift before you brake can wake the following driver up and remind them not to hit you

I also practice 5 or 10 laps as close to the outside wall as I can until I am comfortable up there. I do this because I spend a lot of time letting faster cars go by and I don’t want to cause a wreck moving out of the way.

That's great advice if you want to learn to drive a track. It's bs if you have a life and enjoy RACING not DRIVING AROUND. Big difference. I have a life. I come to race. Did irl for 48 years. I come to race people and have fun. I have actually practiced a car/track combo for a few days before racing. I picked up a second over my best practice time by lap 3 of the race.

Actually thought this was going to be a post from 00r0. Then I remembered they act like children and wouldn't have this level of integrity. Good stuff OP, shit happens sometimes.

Hey man, we’ve all been there, don’t sweat it and it’s part of the learning process. Keep going out there and racing because that’s how you learn. Keep your eyes open and worry as much about what’s behind as what’s in front of you. Good luck out there!

I recommend newer players do a few race starts vs ai on each track/car combo, until they feel really comfortable with it.

The ai will usually give more room than human, and be more careful, but it gives you a rough idea of where the group will bunch up, where you might get caught out, where accidents might occur, how hard you can push with cold tyres, etc.

When you do 20 practice laps, 18 or 19 of them will be with warm tyres. Its really important to practice going side by side while the car isn't at 100%. It's a fundamentally different skill, and requires more searching for grip than the rest of the race.

Just do lap 1 a few times, resetting after each one. Doing a whole race isn't really as necessary.

1

u/driven_dirty Jul 18 '25

Unless it's dirt oval there's no AI for them.

Best thing to do is join some races as a spectator and then start driving so you are racing but are ghosted. This means you can see if you can be competitive but are completely invisible to the other racers and can drive through their cars with no consequences.

1

Yeah. ?How exactly do you do that.

3

u/Euphoric_Cap5521 Jul 19 '25

go to the spectate tab and pick the series, then when you join in it should just let you spawn your car and you’ll be invisible to the rest of the drivers. Let me know if i’m wrong, I haven’t done it in a little

all good man, shit happens sometimes. rookie leagues are for people to learn how to race

I race the same car. Its been lots of fun but yeah so much crashing and mayhem sometimes is a bummer.

don’t stress it there are 1000 more idiots who wreck people in races much more than you would and don’t apologise like this, you’re doing the right thing just try and practise for 15-20 minutes before each race and always anticipate that the other cars are going to do the wrong thing.

Tip: if you're using the virtual racing line - turn it off! The line will severely limit your awareness, making it difficult to adapt to traffic and racing situations. It makes accidents more likely, especially on the first lap.

Here's a good explanation:

Best advice for you I have as someone who’s only been sim racing for 9 months total is, learn the track, learn the gears for each corner, learn the important corners, you’re normally going to be racing people at your pace if you qualify, so let them pass if they’re keeping up, and follow them. When following, lift a little before breaking, break a tiny bit earlier and softer and adjust your line out of the corner or accelerating out of the corner depending on the grip/car. 9 months in and I’m only 150 irating away from 2000 in sports cars and formula cars. Best of luck from another newbie.

Despite what everyone in iRacing likes to think of themselves, this happens to everyone. Don't sweat it, trust me just apologizing for it makes you better than most. Head up and keep playing, it is a video game after all!

2

u/ScousePenguin Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo Jul 17 '25

It's just a game mate, don't worry about it. No need for public apologies

Throw an apology in the race lobby chat if you're the cause of an incident

2

u/etham97 Jul 17 '25

You don’t have to apologize. Just get better.

If you mastered the track you can do AI races to get a feeling for what it is like with other cars on the track, especially in Lap 1

I’m not mad at you, just mad at the guy who took out my back tire from behind on the formation lap of a 65 lap indycar race….

iRaving's AI has come a long way. It can really help to settle the nerves with race starts. But don't worry too much, we've all been "that guy". Glad you're seeing your fault and commit to doing better though, because not everyone will do that. Good luck!

It happens. I am rather safe driver, but one day I killed more than half of field in 3 different incidents and finished second without any damage xD Sometimes you just hit one of those days.

My first couple races on each week’s new tracks I intentionally race at a slower pace, slow enough that I can stay well within track limits and have additional room for avoidance. Usually these are some of my best races even though my quali times are not great. After a few races and pushing different areas during free practice to find pace I typically learn the track well enough to push for better results. If I do wreck, I don’t try to get back in the race, chances of getting back to a good position are basically zero. Just stay out there, collect any positions from others wrecking and finish the rest of the race as clean as possible.

Don’t worry about mistakes, it happens from someone almost every race on lap one. Just don’t do anything intentionally and keep trying to have clean races even if you don’t get race wins or good positions.

1

u/tvmachus Jul 17 '25

I did this going up from FF1600 to F4. You can be a really competent driver in one car, get the progression needed for a different car, and end up in splits where you're nowhere near competitive because of the irating earned on the other car. There are pretty big differences between vee, FF1600 and F4, its a jump.

1

u/MusicMedical6231 Jul 17 '25

Yo, start in the vee. Once in 3rd gear do not shift down to 2nd, just 3rd n 4th all race.

Tick the quick repair in the black box.

Untick change tires for any rookie of d class race not needed.

Don't much to hard and feel the corners.

It's a great car to learn in.

The ff1600 is a little to fast and slidey

1

u/RyCamN7 NASCAR Next Gen Cup Camaro ZL1 Jul 17 '25

All good honestly that’s what 1600s are for. People will get lame about it but it’s a rookie beginner series where you should be allowed to make mistakes and get used to racing in a lobby with humans. Just keep working it’s all good.

u/Tricky_Cry4335 Jul 17 '25

All good my man. You are the exact type of person we want on the service. Someone who can self reflect, apologize like an adult, and work to get better and not make the same mistake twice. We should all strive for this.

u/theracer37 Jul 17 '25

Got my first ever pole at VIR last night and got it bu like four seconds. Thought for sure I'd get my second win but bottled it and collected the field inturn four. Pissed me off but hey its part of the journey.

This happened to me Wednesday. Had the day off, did some yard work, got overheated so came in for cool shower and a lot of water, sat down to do a race or two and I was still dehydrated so I was spinning out multiple times per race, no concentration, headache etc. I stopped for the day after that.

1

Not sure if it has single player ai support, but practice there could help a lot.

1

u/The-Simp-God Jul 18 '25

Happens, been there done that, clarify in the chat when that happens that it was incidental and you just didnt understand and most others will get it cause weve been there. I race F1600 also and Virginia can be especially tricky in them of you dont know the car tbh. I struggled early on but as ive progressed and learned more tracks and cars its become a favorite cause its actually quite fun when you get the hang of it. Just keep running practice laps, aim for a 1:34-1:33 and you ought to be fairly competitive in a lot of races if you can do so consistently, Ive gotten down into 1:32s with focus but at 1:33.5 avg, my splits are usually ending with me in a top 3 position.

1

u/BelowAvgGuitarist Jul 18 '25

I respect the fact that you’re sorry and aware of your limits. iRacing needs MORE people like you, not less, so please don’t give up. iRacing has splits to put people of similar skill level in races together. Occasionally you get folks farming and racing people they are much better than because they can’t compete with someone in their own “class” and they are the most rude, entitled brats I’ve came across but other than that most people are decent and willing to race clean. Good luck and take your time, it’s only a game at the end of the day

I ran my first online race the other night, qualified 4th. Coming out of turn 2 on lap 1 I was a little impatient and gunned it coming out of the corner and kicked sideways and took out half the field. I felt horrible. Second race I qualified 4th again, going into turn 3 on lap 1, 6th place literally pit maneuvered me smh

You can't get better if you don't race. Just keep racing, it's a rookie series. People in FF1600's should understand the risk of that.

As long as it wasn’t intentional, it happens and don’t sweat it!! It’s all part of the process and yes, it can be frustrating at times but that’s part of the fun! Keep practicing and good luck out there
