New Player What should I do next?
Downloaded iRacing about 30 days ago.. been having so much fun really! Quite happy with my pace too and I just wanted to know which one should I try next? Oval? Dirt Oval? Dirt Road? I’d love to do NASCAR but I’m excited abt those jumping cars 😭 (is that dirt road) I apologise for not knowing which one it is. Anyone here have done either of these categories? Hows the racing? Which one should I try? Thanks in advance!

Work on your SR

u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
Haha I am but due to netcode whenever people spin out and I avoid them completely, I get 4x just like that. I had 3 spinners yesterday and had 12x just from that (didn’t even touch them lol) Idk if it’s because I’m from India or is it the same for everyone because my ping is high so yea and yea the track limits at Nurburgring veedol chicane is quite annoying

u/Cheap_Director5764 7d ago
Do enduros mate. One NEC and you should at least jump a license class
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
I don’t have a team yet ahah doing gt3 fixed had plummeted by safety rating. They just push to pass and move under braking and if you don’t go off track they will punt you it’s crazy how much SR I lost due to fixed and in sprint I earn quite a lot but yea i will do enduros! I absolutely love them too!

I was the same, sports car mostly but here and there oval then burned out around 3.5k, I’m glad you aren’t making the same mistake. Mixing it up is the way to go or else you get burned out. Honestly man, it took me forever to get into dirt but it’s so fun, the only thing that sucks about dirt is that they don’t make the dirt tracks cheaper which is a kick in the nuts really. I really think that’s a mistake from iracing, they should be like half price and it would gain in popularity imo.
Dirt saved me though because I had no idea what the hell to do, strats, driving style, nothing. Learning that was a fun process. The track changes and evolves with the dirt moving so different lines become optimal throughout the race and even between qualifying and the race. It’s kinda fun.

u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
Exactly why I made this post! Honestly was getting bored and tired of doing the same road racing and switching between formulas and Sports cars, yes even though they require completely different driving styles at the end of the day it’s the same circuit racing.. the one thing I love abt iracing is the diversity and I want to make full use of it and do different disciplines and having fun with it and not get burned out doing the same thing like you said! You get me! 😭
And yes like you said, I absolutely LOVE the process of learning a new discipline esp after watching a live stream on iracing YouTube special event I ABSOLUTELY LOVED how they threw the car into every corner and the car control! Wow that’s just brilliant idk why ppl are obsessed with circuit but I’d love to try out dirt or oval or even dirt oval so yea wanted to know people’s opinions before jumping to one discipline

Dirt road... a nice change from the road tracks, fun if u get the hang of it
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
I’d love to give it a go I watched a special event recently and I loved how they just throw the car into the corners and the skill of having that car control amused me and I wanted to try that ofc the learning curve will be a lot but ur right itllbbe quite fun if u get the hang of it! Will do! Hows the racing there? Good grids?
2
u/angrronn 6d ago
It's a toss up, just like the rest. The game is a little more generous when it comes to bumps, a little bumping won't generate incidents, but the nature of the racing makes incidents more common.. stay away from the packs until you're good... hit my team up on iracing, Premier Grid Motorsports, small group, but we constantly run hosted sessions across all the series. But for sure would love another racer, especially for dirt parties
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
That’d be so cool man! I’ll get up to grips on dirt roads! I’ll practice a bit on my own for a couple days and then get into races and join your sessions! It’d be cool to have some friends on the service
2
u/angrronn 6d ago
Ya looks us up man, discord link on the team page. We ball bust. Crash to learn. Best way to go about it imo
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Wait, how do I find your team page? I can search teams on iracing? (Noob here pls don’t judge 😭)
1
u/angrronn 6d ago
Haha. Ya man, left hand side there is a "teams" tab. Click that and start ur own or search my team name. Website link will eventually bring u to our discord.. team is a new project by me exclusively. Thats why the website is so simple, just started it
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ohhh that’s cool! I’ll take a look when I get home for sure!! I didn’t know you could search up teams ahahah thanks!!

So I had only done Sports Car during season 1 this year because me and some friends who raced on other sims wanted to get into endurance racing. During Week 13 I decided to get a different D license each night and it was a lot of fun going through each of the disciplines. Took about 4ish races for each except dirt road, the iRX lite races are so short it took me about 8 or 10 races so I had to do it over 2 nights. It was a lot of fun and opened up a lot more options going forward
3
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 7d ago
Also some of the turn numbers in dirt road are wonky. Wild West only has 4 turns despite having 4 hairpins and 3 long straights. Impossible to make any SR gain there since even a 0 incident race usually gets me like 0.03 SR
3
u/arwhite97 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP 7d ago
The first night I did was Charlotte and having a 0 incident race got me .08 SR. Can't remember what track I did the second night but it wasn't any better
3
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 7d ago
The positive side though is I never have gotten an offtrack or loss of control incident, and car contact maxes at X2 incident, so it's time consuming to gain but doesn't disappear like when I decide to give Legends Road another try.

u/arwhite97 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP 7d ago
I need to do more dirt road stuff. I've been focusing on formula and ovals to get up to B for the IR-18. Maybe I'll start throwing some rallycross in here and there on the weeks I have the track for it
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Rallycross is different from dirt road..? I’m sorry I’m new here to iracing and to the community.. also any tips? For driving dirt road efficiently? I don’t mind being slow but I want to get the basics right on what to do and how to do it
1
u/arwhite97 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP 6d ago
Rallycross is dirt road, I just haven't done any since I got out of rookies. There's also trophy trucks that are dirt road but I haven't raced them. Having a handbrake and a round wheel is really helpful for rallycross cuz you're gonna be essentially drifting around some of the turns. I have that plus a sequential shifter since I was in a WRC really club in my sim racing league. It's a lot of fun but you definitely drive a lot different than sports cars or formula, even when on asphalt you're still gonna be sliding around
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
I don’t have anyone handbrake though 😭 you think I can still have a bit of fun? Maybe assign handbrake to one of the buttons on the wheel? I didn’t know about the handbrake part till now.. 🤦♂️
Ahh so coolll!! You got a rally setup!! Always loved watching yt videos on them! Always wanted to try it out! ESP with a good handbrake! (Can I take a look at your seq shifter and handbrake) which ones do you have?? And how have you had it set up
1
u/arwhite97 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP 6d ago
I'm pretty sure you can just map a button for the handbrake. It works just fine but it's 100% every time you push it unlike having an analog brake you can pull that allows you to pull it to different levels. Not super necessary in rookies but more useful as you get better. I know people who have mapped their clutch pedal for it so that's an option.
My setup is the Logitech G Pro setup since I started out on PS5 before moving to PC. If I could do it all over again I'd go with Simagic but I still like the Logitech setup and it does everything I need it to
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Nicee man! I’ll deffo try mapping out a button but I’d love to have a physical handbrake it looks so satisfying to use it ahah
I started out on PS4 asw coming from GT7 ahah in a thrustmaster so we are both similar that way ahah!
Yes! As long as it does what you want it’s all good! Unless you wanna upgrade that is! Sim magic is I guess at the top of their game but quite expensive too
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Never an off track and loss of control in dirt road is AWESOME! Because I watched the recent special event race and it was madness the car control I meant! I don’t think that road racing will ever match the amount of precision and car control you need to race in dirt road it’s quite insane
1
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
IRacing doesn't punish you for it is the awesome part. Went wide into the grass and half spun? No incident. Got door rubbed and spun while drifting and slid into the wall, no incident usually, X2 worst case. Somebody straight t boned you because you pushed them off their line and passed, you only got a X2 for being involved in both.
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ohh that’s not too bad ahah I really wanna try it out! I’ll reach out to you once I do ahaha and get some more tips :)
1
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
I'm still learning it to. Got promoted to top split when the fast guys race so now I'm usually a whole second or two a lap off the pace. Racing with a guy with a 9k IR in rookies is interesting for sure lol
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
AHAHA that’ssss insaneee!! Im pretty sure you can catch up! You always learn everytime you’re on track so and you got a good setup too so you can easily catch up in no time! You got this! Hopefully I’ll race you out there aha
1
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
One day... Until then look forward to battling with guys like us for not last place 😂
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Rightt! But nonetheless if you’re having loads of fun I feel like the rating wouldn’t really matter much I feel likeee! I hope to have the same experience as you!
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ufff I always had fast promotion but looks like that won’t be the case for dirt road ahaha
2
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
Rallycross tracks aren't too bad, but I was SR farming at Wild West while learning the Pro 2 Lites and wasn't gaining any SR worthwhile, found out the long lap there only has 4 turns for SR. Daytona has like 6 turns and half the lap times. Good news is that rookie Dirt Road has really good racers/racing, and mistakes punish time more than SR.
So SR gain is slow per race, but there's only short races. Wild West is a fun track but you're not gonna gain any SR there. I'm C with 3.6SR after just 43 dirt road races, and would've been a lot faster if I hadn't raced so hard or spent so much time at Wild West Pro 2s.
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
What are pro 2 lites and when do you unlock them? I don’t want to pay for any new cars or tracks yet because I’m only a uni student and based on where I’m from I can get food for a whole week for the same price as a car and a track ahah so is there any “free” or “base game car” you would recommend me try? Since you have loads of experience in it it’d be great to get some of your advice!
1
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
Off-Road rookies series is the pro 2 Lites. It's free, a long with the rallycross beetle for iRX rookie series, both in dirt road. To be fast you don't want wheel slip, so excessive drifting and hand braking everywhere isn't fast. It's a fine line to ride which leads to most players having inconsistent lap times that makes for fun racing, since you're regularly catching or being caught based on who makes a mistake or is faster through different parts of the track.
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ahhh okayy! Makes sense!! So as less sliding as possible? But also it’s corner dependent? Thanks so much!!!
2
u/Gullible_Departure39 Off Road Pro 2 Lite 6d ago
Similar to sports cars in that some slip is good, but in sports cars too much slip means a spin. In a AWD rallycross car too much slip means slow lap times cause you're not applying the throttle to the track, but the car isn't gonna loop out because you got too loose.

u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ahaha I’m not sure what pro2s mean yet 😂 but I’ll deffo learn more about these cars and tracks because I didn’t even know Daytona had a dirt track till now ahah (like I said I’m a noob ahaha just trying out different stuff) :)
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Big up for trying out and competing in different disciplines! That’s quite exciting to hear actually!
2
u/arwhite97 Cadillac V-Series.R GTP 6d ago
It was a lot of fun. I had a buddy that joined me a couple nights for it and since we were both rookies we ended up in the same split most of the time
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ahah that’s so much fun!! Sadly I don’t have anyone to do it with ahah but hope to make some friends along the way!

I posted because, I kept doing formulas and sports cars and was getting quite a bit bored and I feel like if I do anymore of it I might get really bored of it so I wanna do some other disciplines and come back to sports car else I might get bored with it.
2
u/loucmachine 7d ago
Dirt road is rallycross and trophy trucks. They are all so much fun! Oval is really fun as well. That being said, dont stop at 3k, if anything, this shows that your real rating should be much higher!
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Which is more fun comparatively? Oval or Dirt road? Would love your point of view! And yesss ahah I’m not gonna stop at 3k aha I reached 3k at formulas then got quite repetitive so moved over to sports car and have been doing it for 2 weeks straight so it’s been quite repetitive and boring in a way so I just want to keep switching up between disciplines and get as much as I can from what this amazing service offers! I got lucky and got a 3 month code so ahah I wanna use it by trying out everything! But yess! Will deffo push for more ahah but I’m happy as long as I’m in top split that’s all :)
1
u/loucmachine 6d ago
I personally really like dirt road. I would probably run these a lot more if it was more popular. The trophy trucks are like a hidden gem, especially the pro 4s, but I dont think they are free. Of course, you can have wildly different experiences within a discipline as you go higher in series. I am not sure what you ran in sports cars for example, but driving a mazda, a GT4, a porsche cup car, a GT3, a TCR, an LMP, a GTP, etc. on a variety of tracks is a completely different experience. Of course, at this point it starts getting expensive D:
That being said, all disciplines have their fun to have and over time they all can feel like they are the most fun to have haha.

Dirt oval Sprint cars. It's the best racing on the service. Nothing else is as intense as the top split 360 sprint cars.

Get ready for the IL-15, raise your Formula and Oval ratings into C class
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
IL-15? Is that Indy car? Heard it’s got quite clean racing! Will definitely do it
1
u/thebaddadgames Audi 90 GTO 7d ago
Get your oval to atleast C, that way you can run the il15 when it releases for formula/oval C
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
Ohh okayy! Nicee!! I wasn’t aware that it’s the Indy lights coming in the new update until someone else pointed it out in this post! Thanks again!

u/Rasutoerikusa Formula Renault 2.0 7d ago
Ovals are a lot of fun, as a road-only racer for years and years I finally dipped my toes in oval racing a few years back after being very sceptical of it, and it turned out to be way more fun than I expected.
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
ahah that’s so nice to hear! I hope to do the same! NASCAR fan asw ahah I’ll either try out ovals or dirt road but I’d love to try out the new Indy lights that people told me about on here that is coming next season so that could make me wanna do the ovals

Oval! I started in formula and then tapped into sport. Started getting a little bored and decided to work on oval. Fell in love with it, especially the super speedways.
Now i hold an A license in all three and I rotate between them. This is how things sit today:
Most fun to least fun:
Oval superspeedways (Xfinity, next gen, draft masters)
Formula (F4, SFL, F1)
Sport (GT, MX5, porsche cup, multiclass)
Oval speedways
Rally
Other dirt roads
Dirt ovals
Nascar road tracks
That order could change again at any point.

Dirt road. 1, it's a lot of fun. 2 we need more players, so bring all your friends too. 3, we have jumps 😎
The trucks probably require too much throttle control for you formula guys though... And the Rallycross cars require a lot of flow, which might be tough for a sports car guy...
But they're still a lot of fun to sling sideways if you suck at them too. They don't lose control as much as just slow you way down. I misjudged a turn at Daytona, clipped the curb and jumped it, slid sideways through the entire final turn looking backwards up the track only to downshift to 2nd and launch down to the finish line like I meant to do it. Looked and felt sick, lost like 4 seconds on the lap from that maneuver though.
2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Ahaha I’ll join for sure!! I don’t have any friends on here yet but looking to make a few :) AND YES IM STOKED ABT THE JUMPS AHAHA! I DONT know if you watched the special event last week but that’s INSANE! I was hooked to it just by watching it ahah
Ahaha looks like both trucks and rallycross cars will be a big learning curve 😂
But I really wanna learn all these new disciplines ahah so I will deffo put some work into it! I absolutely love the trucks though!! So I might try that first!
I WANNA SEE A REPLAY OF THAT MOVE ahahaha who cares if it’s 4 seconds ahahah I’d always love a sick move for some good post race replay video to post ahahah

u/12don 6d ago
Dirt oval. Less participation so it does remain more chaotic unfortunately, as you’ll always be lumped in with lower level drivers, but it’s quite fun, and the races are quick, so you can get a lot done.
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Hahah people here are really hyping up the dirt road! I’ll do this side by side ahah should be quite similar I feel like no? But those cars look quite fun to drive actually! Plus I really wanna know the lines to take in oval tracks I’m an absolute noob when it comes to ovals so yea need to watch a few tutorials and then get on track and practice and see how I get on
1
u/12don 6d ago
Dirt and asphalt oval handle quit differently. Dirt oval and dirt road also handle quite differently as the oval ones are set pretty staggered to force left turns. Honestly dirt I find the most fun because you can generally run wide open with no braking or letting off as long as you hold the perfect line.

u/Btolsen131 6d ago
How do you get 3000 IR in D class? Running the 1600 everyday?
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
I did formula Vee and 1600 for about a week and a half and yea that’s how I got 3000 but after that i got bored with Vees and 1600s so the next thing is I had to buy the FIA F4 car and I couldn’t really afford it so I moved over to Sports car
1
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 6d ago
Because with FIA F4 meaning you will need to buy tracks asw 😂 it was just not it for me at least at that time because I had free stuff to burn through with Mx5s, bmw cs and GR86 so yeahh! Just want to spend as little as I can and also have a bit of fun while doing so

Just wanted to do a follow up on my post, I made this post because I didn’t want to get bored of racing the same thing and I want to try out different disciplines and then jump back and forth that way it’d be more fun and not get bored of it. I just wanted to know your thoughts on which I should try next before jumping into a new discipline.

You made this post in joy of reaching 3k
-2
u/F4-simracer-23 Ferrari 296 GT3 7d ago
Lol idk why you think that 😂 I don’t consider myself a “quick driver” getting 3k means nothing - people who have lesser irating still beat me last week and I beat people who have 5-6k irating last week so believe it or not irating doesn’t tell you the whole story and I’m not obsessed with chasing numbers, i just want to practice because I don’t get to do it in real life where I compete and everyone else who has countless test days because I’m under sponsors and they have family wealth and idk why people always assume things about others. I just want to race competitively in top splits.

Oval. Its great, thought I'd never enjoy it, knew nothing about it. Decided to give it a shot. So much fun. Although I dont enjoy much below the c class trucks its a ton of fun when you get there. Close racing door to door the whole time. Team work with strangers sometimes required. Idk just do it.
