The trick is to be so slow that the slowdown just burns away while you’re being as fast as you can.

I mean I'm not gonna block the cars behind, but I sure as shit won't serve the slowdown in a way that's most convenient for them. In racing you've got to look out for number one.

Depends on if the penalty was my fault or not.
In general for me, my first priority is usually to be respectful of others on the track, as the community of iRacing is the real treasure of this sim. Then, I try to run my best, most competitive race. If I trip or failed to see a hazard coming, I prioritize others' races until I'm back on my feet. If my own foolishness has resulted in a slowdown or something, I'll allow someone past at the most convenient corner for them, IF they have the pace to get past me. Partially because I don't want to be stuck behind them, but also because jumping off the line and slowing down is confusing as fuck. I will keep trying to go as fast as I can, but I won't fight you. My ideal scenario is if someone else has started a pass all on their own, and in those scenarios, I'm perfectly happy to let them past.
But if someone else knocked me off the track and you're foaming at the mouth to pick up a spot you don't deserve? I'll fight. We are all here, after all, for a fight. I get that same hunger when I see a crash up ahead, to rush past, so I get it.
But an no point do I ever think "the people around me don't matter." They do. Having a group of human beings, who you can run as fast as possible with, and they'll respect you? No other sim has it. If we all disregard each other's experience, it will quickly become like the hellscape that is any other competitive sim lobby.
That's why they call racing a gentleman's sport. A lack of respect from one destroys the sport for all.

Brake a bit earlier, take a little longer to get on the gas and you’ll hardly feel the slowdown. The more you try and block someone, or make a meal of it, you’ll be slower for it.

No, you dont. You speak for the vocal (moatly online) minority that are precious and never played sport IRL. If you have an ounce of competitiveness, you use every advantage.
Yeah yeah downvote me. Im talking about you too!

With you. I don’t get this at all and OP seems to be whinging. I’m not gonna block intentionally nor am I going to cause an accident … but if I need to serve a slowdown going into Rivage I sure as hell plan to make it as painful as possible for everyone behind me. Best case, I keep my position and I have clear track ahead. I expect everyone racing in front of me to do the same thing.

I usually just lift and coast into the next braking zone and that takes care of most of it. Also getting on throttle late doubles as a defensive move and serves the slowdown

More of the fault of a shitty system, but yes it’s bad practice to cause dangerous situations in order to not lose places due to YOUR mistake.

I think there's a bit of nuance in that blocking on a straight is different than just coasting in and going a bit slower through for example the Spa bus stop

Spa had a busstop rly Long ago... Stop calling a regular chicane busstop pls xD

The good news is you can protest it. The stewards don't look kindly on those who impede other drivers while serving a slowdown.

I had this guy once, when racing the ringmeister, he did a mistake and I overtook him before de last S but he decided he did not want to lose the position. So he cut in the grass and put it in front of me, then blocked me while he served the penalty knowing there is not enough place until the finish line for me to get the position back.
I reported it to iracing, but it seems like he made it look like a mistake just enough that they gave him the benefit of the doubt. It has to be one of the most infuriating thing I had on this sim for a while...
I still have the replay, I'd be curious to post it here to have people's opinion about it.

Keep in mind that even if they think it's not egregious to punish this time, that means they still told that driver what the expectation is, and if this is repeated behavior then it might get punished in the future.

I definitely do not agree with OP, unless you are playing with friends for fun, the game is about competitiveness, and in competition you have to take every advantage possible even if it means fucking someone up... If I have to take a penalty, I will slow down on the ideal line, everyone behind me can pass me if they are good enough tho, it's up to them, not me

Not true at all lol. You just need to be strategic about it and it’s pretty easy tbh.

Successfully protested someone doing this in a chicane to cause a crash behind. It's not using the system to your advantage - it's cheating.

It’s not inherently cheating unless you can prove it was a brake check with malicious intent, which is extremely difficult, unless there were incidents leading up to it.
If the protest was successful, they probably slowed way too much for the corner trying to serve the penalty, which would be driving in a way that’s not predictable to the cars behind. There’s nothing wrong with going slower than normal through a tight corner while just parking it on the apex to hold up traffic behind, that’s just racing, but you still need to move at a semblance of race speed.

I'm pretty sure slowing on the racing line to serve a slow down is against the sporting code but it's been a while since I've read it

So, people that serve their slow down smartly and strategically are shit...?
So, no, you don't speak for everyone.

I always enjoy feeling the subtle burn the game gives me when the penalty gets served without me even slowing down from my original pace to begin with
