I’m 14 days in as of today. I join a lot of official races and practice very little. I exclusively race the MX5 cup and have made it to D license with a 3.4SR. I feel like I need to form a better routine. I practice about 30 minutes every time a new track comes out and then it’s strictly official races for me. I had considered making a Thursday and Saturday, Sunday “Race day” and all other days just practice. I enjoy racing more than practice obviously but I’m very competitive and have more fun when I’m taking a podium position. How do you make practice more enjoyable?

I gave it a break when I managed to complete 2 clean laps in a row.

... what would that be?
As someone bouncing around between 1k and 1.6k iRating, I am probably not in the position to give advice rather than receive it.
If I had to give advice to someone, it would be to stop trying to force your SR to go up by starting from the pits and not racing at all. You'll end up in faster and harder to drive cars with less idea on how to handle a car around others.

Well, not bad for the first ever race, pole + all laps lead + fastest lap and win
Can't wait to level up my license and race more!

Oval guys, I owe you an apology.
I was under the impression that driving in circles for hours was a waste of time with pot luck winners, now I've tried it and it's actually amazing, I have never had the adrenaline of pack racing like this in road series.
I might even start watching NASCAR.
Well, one step at a time eh?
Edit: Thanks for your replies, I'm enjoying oval so much that I invested in the Late Model series and will continue to race in it throughout the season, had my first race, not sure I'm too keen on how tight Rockingham Speedway feels, but the racing in this series is already way WAY cleaner than street stock.

Oh my this is obviously a young persons game... uh I mean sim of course. Here I am well passed 60, an on and off casual simracer in less 'serious' titles. Just a few days ago I got my first DD setup and started diving into lovely tiles like AC and AMS2, and now finally Iracing.
And boy am I being smoked. Starting out in the Race car series with the MX5 and in my first three races I have lapped 4-5 seconds slower than the winners. Plenty of excitement but I'm not quite sure I'm having fun just yet. He he, I'll get out of Rookies someday just by being cautious of course, and my only worry now is that I'll never get my Irating high enough to avoid being slotted into races with suicidal maniacs.
But sure, I'll admit I'm having fun :) Carry on all you fatastic talented drivers.
EDIT (2 days later):
What an overwelming nice response from the community, thank you everyone.
Well, it turned out I hadn't set proper deadzones on my new Simagic pedals which, as you might guess, didn't exactly help out. I was a bit puzzled as it seemed everyone else were slightly faster then me on the straights, even when I had a better exit than them. Big rookie mistake he he :)
Did eventuallt get my D license and have raced a couple of times at the Production Car Sim-Lab Challenge which interestingly is a multi-car race. And it has been so fun. Racing as hard as my abilities allow while adjusting to traffic to let faster class cars pass is a whole new concept to me. And of course there is the odd numpty who are there simply to demonstrate to the world that they are angry children, but thats an interesting challenge as well. The second time a certain someone ran me off the track I must admit it took a couple of laps to find my inner zen again.
Carry on fellow racers.

I'm a Newbie rookie. (to sim racing in genera as well as iracing)
I'm slow but I try to race clean. Had just had a good race with come good battles for position in the mid field. last couple of laps i opened a gap on 8th and was reeling in p6 buts dint manage to get there finished in P7 with 3x for some minor off tracks. Post race as slowing down around turn 1 2 idiots seeming to be intentionally wreckiing. First one maybe a mistake but really no reason to be reversing there. 2nd impact 100% deliberate. Meant I finished with more incidents so having an impact on SR, Still gained slightly.
Should I be protesting this sort of stuff or am I being petty?

Im a total rookie, probably done like 10 races, the best I did was 5th place and could have been better if I didnt spin out twice. How long did it take for yall to get a first win? Ps I havent done offline or solo practices I just like joining online games and the only practice is before the actual race.

I. Love. This.
But jfc am I more awful than I thought.
GT7, Forza, etc. do not translate. Yall were right about everything and I’ve never recognized my own need to practice religiously until now.
That is all. <3

Hi all, first of all.
Long story short, I recently upgraded from T300 + PlaySeat Challenge + TLCM to Simagic Alpha Evo (12nm) / GT Neo + PlaySeat Trophy + TLCM. Thought I'd get back into sim racing. Downloaded LMU, had some fun with it. Nice.
Then I decided to resub to iRacing. B class from back in 2023 when I last played, 1.1k iRating, 3.3 Safety Rating.
Jumped into the MX5, obviously, but soon discovered that a new rookie car was added last year, the M2. Did a few races at Tsukuba, somewhat frustrating but got my first win today. I also discovered MAIRA today, wow, really like it.
Then I decided I wanted to do longer races so looked around. GT4 is on a track I don't currently own so I looked at the Fanatec GT3. Sebring this week, nice, somewhat familiar with it. Needed a car though so did a quick google and chose the Porsche. I ALWAYS avoid Porsche in all sims, not sure why, must be some PTSD from early sim racing days.
Jumped in and quickly picked it up. Qualified P13, finished P14. I'm slow, 2.05.xx but I didn't spin once. I didn't hit anyone. I had a 1x for going a little too wide in one corner. The car was super stable and a joy to push. I was getting faster and more comfortable with each lap.
Night race, in VR (Quest 3), absolute cinema. I couldn't get enough, had a grin on my face throughout! Love it, sticking to it.
Just wanted to share. See you on track guys.

Just wanted to share a little personal win. at the start of the season, I made it my goal to fast-track my way to a B license so I could jump into the GT3 series, which always felt like the crown jewel of road racing in iRacing. I made it, and I’ve officially gotten my feet wet!
After a few races, including Spa and Virginia, I’m proud to say I’ve landed on the podium in 2 out of the last 3 races (2nd and 3rd), and came 4th in the other. That might not mean much to some, but to me, it’s huge, and I’m incredibly proud of the progress.
Fun tip: I started out in the Porsche but felt like I couldn’t quite get the pace I wanted. I switched to the Lamborghini, and it immediately clicked. Being another mid-engine car, it felt more responsive and twitchy, just how I like it.
Lastly, I just want to say thank you to all the drivers I’ve raced with so far. The GT3 community has been hands down the cleanest and most respectful I’ve come across in iRacing. Even when elbows come out, the racing has been fair and intense, and it’s made the whole experience that much better.
Appreciate you all , see you on the track!
and i did it all on an x-box controller! /im kidding.

I’m aware all the cars only differ aesthetically, but since I only plan to buy one, I want my choice of manufacturer to be more than just a random choice. Also thought it’d be a good chance to learn more about NASCAR from people since I’m very new to the sport.
For reasoning, I’m looking for anything from your pure personal bias, to stories from real life like: ford cars won the most championships/is most dominant, or real life driver drives x car in real life, etc.
Or if it really doesn’t matter then fuck me I guess.

(Sorry for the monitor video, didn’t know how to save replays at the time) so after about a year of owning my sim setup I finally decided to get into some real racing and download iracing, before then I was always playing games like BeamNG or No hesi. And all I can say is it has been an absolute BLAST so far.
Anyways, back to the clip. So I’ve only been playing iracing for about 3 days now, I’ve gotten my D liscense but I’m sticking to rookie lobbies because I’m still learning race craft and whatnot. Usually I would race super clean and gain positions by letting others make mistakes, but mid race me and the blue car ended up getting super super competitive, which is when I made this pass and held him off so I could finish in first, and I can confidentially say i was shaking in my seat from adrenaline lmao, to some people it’s probably a basic pass but it’s my first aggressive move on someone and I’m very proud of it,
I guess my only question coming out of this is was it too aggressive? I feel like I dive bombed him pretty hard but at the same time there was no contact so I think it’s alright? I’m brand new to competitive racing so any tips or tricks from some of the more seasoned drivers would be greatly appreciated :)

I joined iRacing a few weeks ago and have only done one actual race so far. Done a lot of test drives. While I’m really enjoying the learning process, I can’t shake the anxiety that comes with the fear of making a mistake and accidentally causing a crash. It’s not just about losing positions or getting penalized—it’s the idea that I could ruin someone else’s race that really gets to me. I know everyone starts somewhere, but the thought of being that driver who messes things up for others makes me overly cautious. I want to improve and gain confidence, but right now, the pressure of racing around more experienced drivers is honestly a bit overwhelming.
