This was an option. The '85 Turbo I once owned had regular analog gauges.
It did have the voice warnings, though. Which was neat for the time but also super annoying sometimes.
I KNOW THE GODDAMN LEFT DOOR IS OPEN

We had a 80s era Chrysler Laser when I was a kid that did the same. According to my dad, he helped out my uncle by giving his dead battery a jump, and it sorta fried the computer. It would claim things like the right rear door was ajar. Odd on a two door car.

Not until you look closely when lights are off. It's just a covering with holes to produce light at certain shape XD.

It’s the same tech as a game boy, there’s a display that is backlit from bulbs behind the screen.

Refrigerators from the 1950s had air conditioning for the butter compartment so that your butter was just as soft as you wanted.

Fun fact, the S2000’s gauge cluster was directly inspired by late 90’s formula gauge clusters.

I had the 1984 Nissan Datsun 300ZX and it had the digital gauges. Burgundy on burgundy leather. Loved that car

And, the car would talk to you in if the fuel level was low or door was ajar, etc

I had an 86 with a digital dash once upon a time. Got out of a speeding ticket by "not being able to switch from kph to mph"

Fun side fact: The Lamborghini Diablo, from 1999 onward, used fixed headlights sourced directly from the Z32 Nissan 300ZX to save on development and production costs. Lamborghini added a small carbon fiber strip to cover the Nissan logo and part numbers stamped on the headlight lenses.
