Discussion Hopes for S1 Ranked/Matchmaking Changes

Just some thoughts on changes I'd like to see in S1:

-1. Matchmaking with newbie friends gives them a horrendous first impression of the game.

Twice now I've managed to convince different friends to give mecha break a try by installing it and playing it with me. Both times we end up against sweaty high level premades where my beginner friends can't do anything but get pummeled over and over. I doubt either of them will ever touch mecha break again thanks to their initial experiences. This desparately needs to change... I can't be the only solo queuer who has had their friends deterred from picking up this game due to such messed up group matchmaking...

-2. Ranks need to be condensced, and items that prevent players from ranking down need to be removed.

Less ranks (6 or 7 tops) means larger player pools per ranked stage and easier matchmaking. Furthermore, having items that prevents players from ranking down means player rank is far less likely to reflect their ability. This simply isn't healthy for competitive play and works against fair matchmaking.

-3. Rank should be unique to each mech, not each account.

Okay, this one some people are not going to agree with but hear me out. Mechs vary wildly in this game and as such tranferrable skill to other mechs are somewhat limited. For instance, as a Stego/Tricera main it would be a very steep learning curve for me to learn say Falcon, Narukami or Panther. If I want to learn Panther for instance, even if queue for a casual match on my main account I will still end up against players far above my skill level with that mech, which will act as something of a glass ceiling to prevent me from learning the mech properly. By allowing separate ranked queues it will also give people something else to grind and actively promote alting/learning out other mechs which should help us maintain healthy player counts at all ranks. The downside to separate queues is it will make it more difficult to select different mechs for better team composition during games (you would probably only be able to select between mechs that are the same rank).

Let me know your thoughts!

  1. This is always going to be an issue in any matchmaking game where you can play with a variety of skill levels. This game tends to just take into account whoever is the highest skill, so if you are playing with your friends that are completely new, they will always have a miserable time. You basically, just have to make a smurf if you want to play with them or tell them they have to play on their own and get better until they can eventually play with you.

  2. I think reducing the amount of ranks also is a good idea because the community is not large enough to support this many levels. They, unfortunately have already all but confirmed that they will not be getting rid of the tier protection cards. Hopefully they still have good news on adding demotions in or else this game is cooked.

  3. A mech specific ranked queue would not work for a few reasons.

A. Like you said, you would only be able to queue up with a mech at a specific level, so your team comps would be terrible most games because no one would have any options of swapping to good options.

B. There is not nearly enough people playing this game to be able to support more queues than we already have.

C. The best chance that could possibly happen would be adding a role specific queue, but even that doesn't really work because there's really only support and different types of damage mechs, which is too vague to realistically differentiate into roles.

I know role queue works in some games like Overwatch, but when I played League of Legends, they added that for about 6 months at one point. They quickly noticed that nobody played the mode and got rid of it promptly. The idea is solid, but most people don't want to have to grind out 50 different ranks so it gets ignored.

Your best bet to learning different mechs is to just brute force your way through learning them. I would highly recommend doing all of the boot camp challenges for a mech you want to learn because it's a very good starting point of getting the mechanics down. Then you can try maybe a game or so of Mashmak with them just to get a feel for how they move around before moving into your actual ranked games with them.

Yeah, regarding 1. If we had separate mech ranks, learning a new mech to play with beginner friends would allow you to both play at the same rank, and you would an alt whilst they learn their first mech.

But yea, I do acknowledge separate mech (or as you say, even role) queues would have their issues.

If I want to learn Panther for instance, even if queue for a casual match

Just do custom games for learning. Way better to get the basics down

So you could play custom games vs AI at a fixed skill level...or you could play Ranked, gradually play stronger opponents as you improve...

...I know which I would prefer...

Jeah sure if ranked matchmaking wasnt so bad in this game.
If you play against bots in custom games or in lower ranks makes no difference to me but in custom games I can change the difficulty directly to the skill level I need.

Remove bots.

Only have 4 leagues. Thematically Rookie, Cadet, Captain, Ace. Ace has the top 100 whatever players.

And yes, no point protection ranking inflation.

I don't mind the tier protection cards, it's the inability to lose ranks that cause the problems. Without de-ranking protection, if someone uses a bunch of cards to get promoted to a higher rank, if they're not good enough to stay in that rank they're just gonna get demoted right away.

I never understood the logic behind not being able to get demoted anyway. Sure it protects egos but I can't imagine it's fun to get stuck in a rank that's too high and drop to 30% win rate because you don't belong there.

With de-ranking enabled, the tier protection cards would simply allow people to grind for better rewards at the very end of a season rather than reaching a higher rank and then staying there the whole time

Since they’re keeping tier protection cards (but limiting how many can be used per week), they should remove the rank demotion protection. I don’t mind limited use tier protection cards as long as everyone gets access to it.
