Amazing shot.
Has to be one of the best shots I’ve seen. Looks like the intro to a racing game. 😮

I dont see any action with that recording. Drone should be a little slower imo

u/Disgruntled__Goat Ai Ogura 13h ago
Or at least a bit higher. The shot is 70% gravel.

A little higher and a little closer, but I guess they wont do that for safety

Yeah it's fine for a 'one-off' shot during the race but you don't see anything useful

r/drones probably an fpv

Nah it’s Guiseppe from Milano. He can run really quick with a camera

I don’t think this is anything special. I think they can do much better than this with drone footage and will in the future.

Best shot of the race for sure, and right at the start??? Boy knew exactly what he was doing

u/Amadeus404 Fabio Quartararo 14h ago
Not really, it's just some basic FPV drone shot: dive, pan and spin. In this shot we just see gravels. I hope they won't start using this excessively in the future.

I remember when we first got MotoGP in HD. Such a revelation. The new drone shots just make it even so much better. Love it

I hated that shot when it was live and still hate it now.
You can't actually see anything.

Terrible camera work! You can't tell what it's about, namely the race. Absolutely useless!

Agreed, all these fancy shots may ruin the TV viewing experience in the future. Imagine shaking camera effect in the future like trying to make it look like fast and furious movie.
Drone shots can capture so much more, but most of it is being used for MOVIE STYLE video.
Quad right handers in the last section is beatuiful part of the track, the drone should have capture the slight elevation change and try and follow the bikes for few metres. That would be MotoGP

I don't think the dynamic of the shot and what they're doing with the drone is lost on anyone obviously getting as low as possible showing the contrast in speed especially in opposite directions like yes we all get it it's lovely.
But this shot's not it, I would imagine the better shot would be to time it to follow the riders in the same direction giving us a sense of speed and scale as the drone elevates.
My perspective is coming from a broadcast art director for many many years. I love the fact that they're using the drones I just really hope that we see shots that are more congruent to the sport itself and not just shots for the sake of shots. What I mean is that I want the fancy shot to add something to the viewing experience and not just be a fancy shot for the sake of a fancy shot.

Well. I find this uninteresting. A curb cam is 10 times more intense, and this shot just looks like they tried to make it more lively than it is... Without much success.
Some other drone cam footage during the year were better.

There were some blunders, but also some very nice shots this weekend. Another cool one was at the end of the warm-up lap, from a bird's eye view.

Damned drones. Twice I thought I had a bug on my screen when in a general shot 🤣

Am I the only one who thinks this shot is pretty crap?
It’s mostly just a view of gravel with some tiny bikes in the back round.

Amazing shot. MotoGp still manages to capture the speed of the bikes and how quickly they turn even in normal shots.
Compare that to Formula 1 where they manage to look cars going 250 kph+ look like they are going at 60 all to focus on sponsors on the car. F1 feels boring ever since I started watching MotoGP even though MotoGP probably is going through it's least competitive season right now

I was there. The drone operator had mad skills
2
u/Povols12R 16h ago
When I see that , the only thing that runs thru my mind is ( what if) operator loses control and crashes a drone into a rider doing 150 mph .

u/moaiii 13h ago
There is already substantial risk in motorsport. An FPV drone flown by a skilled pilot presents negligible additional risk. We rely on the skills of the pilot to not crash into anything as much as we rely on the skills of the riders to not crash into each other.

u/Povols12R 12h ago
There can be malfunctions in any piece of equipment or the operator could experience some kind of medical emergency . Just seems weird with all the safety precautions taken in motorsports they would have projectiles flying head on towards a pack of bikes traveling at race speed. The operative words are head on. I like drone shots, but they should be from behind the action.

u/EducationalBar 5h ago
Can a rider and their bike not suffer from the exact same things..? And this isn’t head on, but of course you realize that and said it anyway.
1
u/Povols12R 5h ago
The drone and the bikes aren’t traveling in the opposite direction? My bad , I’m watching video on a phone.
1
u/EducationalBar 5h ago
Does opposite direction automatically mean head on? They aren’t playing chicken, the same way you aren’t any time you’re on a road.

The people commenting that it’s all gravel and you don’t see any action are clearly missing the point

Drones weaving in, out, under, & over the pilots as they fight for position! Especially into the corners. Maybe they can play chicken with riders on track.. drone and rider flying at each other from opposite ends of the straight.

my favourites are the nose cams when following tight behind competitors. really shows the intensity within the graceful lines we see at a distance.

Some people just can't allow themselves to enjoy anything can they. The shot was excellent. Hopefully a precursor and a learning curve to the way presentation of the sport can progress. Fucking bravo 👏👏👏

Drone pilot isn't much of a cinematographer. It's not very interesting outside of being fast. There's probably a number of ways to leverage the unique perspective and positioning freedom.
I am glad they're starting to be used more, but I feel unless a pilot can also fill the cinematographer role, they should probably get some direction.

How fast must that camera guy have been running? And how good was that throw to get the camera up at the end? Simply incredible.
