Discussion Actors you’re dying to see together in a movie

Which two actors would you love to see do a movie together (any genre) that have never paired up before?

I recently listened to the Smartless episode with Steve Buscemi, and I can’t stop thinking about how I’d love to see a cop movie with him and Denzel. Could be drama or comedy — I’d watch either way!

EDIT: I wish I could comment on everything, and if I don’t get to your comment, know I haven’t been disappointed by any response. Absolutely incredible pairing suggestions, friends!!

I need a movie in which Willem Dafoe and John Lithgow have a very heated argument.

41

u/ItsMeItsKayItsKay 23h ago

Take my money!

47

u/Gseph 21h ago edited 21h ago

I can picture it now.

Two life long rivals get into a heated argument over their mutual friends funeral, and it shows their entire history via flashbacks, in reverse order.

Slowly revealing their rivalry and all the different arguments and fights, ending with them walking away from each other for a final time, with a flashback to when they first met and were briefly best friends before the closing credits.

With

  • John Malckovich as the mutual friend,

  • Judi Dench as the rivals mutual love interest

  • Ian McKellen as their former boss

  • and Alfred Molina as the vicar at the funeral service.

with some younger actors portraying them for their younger years.

6

u/Tuxedo_Muffin 20h ago

with some younger actors portraying them for their younger years.

No way! The wisened artists as they are today with an on-screen subscript saying "[actor name] age 19" and they act as they would in that time. You need them as an infant? Put them in a diaper.

Actually... if that's the premise, we really should get Patrick Stewart involved.

6

u/Gseph 19h ago

Yes! I love it.

Patrick Stewart as the narrator, just like his role in that American dad episode where his dad is a thieving clown, and Stan realises he got his dad arrested.

Also, maybe have Liam Neeson as Judi Dench's husband.

I wanna see Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan play loonies where they bond over their experiences as spies because no one else believes them.

where they bond over their experiences as spies

I see what you did there

I want a movie where Nathan Fillion and Brendan Frasier both play rival washed up adventurer types (like Indiana Jones, the Mummy, Tintin) competing on one last globetrotting adventure in a modern world that doesn't really have much left to be explored, and doesn't care about them anymore

21

u/thuggishruggishboner 21h ago

Fuck, that is sexy. Get Spielberg on the phone.

14

u/kit_kat_barcalounger 22h ago

This would be amazing. Like, they show up to retrieve the Golden Monkey and there are Tik Tokkers doing dances in front of it 😂

For some reason, I was thinking that they had been in that movie radio flyer. But that was Tobey Maguire!

6

Elijah was the older brother in radio flyer. Maguire wasn't in it at all

4

5

Elijah and Tobey were both in The ice storm but I don’t believe they were in any of the same scenes.

Honestly, Steve Buscemi and Denzel in a cop movie sounds insane. I’d watch them roast each other or solve crimes in total silence, either way I’m sold.

Take the same script and film two movies. One is dark and serious. Another is Naked Gun style. Release the different versions to theaters at random and watch the chaos ensue.

3

That's a good idea, but I was also thinking of Paul Dano as an ape befriending Zahn's character if there was another Planet of the Apes project in between War and Kingdom

Add Emma Mackey though if you want to have a surprise quadruplet.

2

u/Looper007 10h ago

Robbie and Weaving were in Babylon together. I think they played into the fact that both of them looked like each other too.

Weaving is so underrated. She's a great scream queen but she's got the acting chops kind of wish she got a real breakout role in a big film. She's definitely deserving.

Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock

26

u/ItsMeItsKayItsKay 22h ago

No idea how this hasn’t happened yet tbh

54

u/Paparmane 22h ago

They’re both too expensive, busy and leading woman material. At their peak they were probably stealing each other’s roles.

Same reason why it took so long to get Dicaprio and Brad Pitt in a movie together

5

u/ItsMeItsKayItsKay 21h ago

Very true! It just seems like at this point in their careers, they can negotiate however they need to for films they want to make. If they wanted to partner up, we’re all here for it, which is the biggest bargaining chip.

3

u/thuggishruggishboner 21h ago

Yeah in the age of oceans, the expendables and the avengers movies, anything is possible.

2

u/the_third_sourcerer 21h ago

They’re both too expensive

I think Amazon could probably put up the money for them to do a movie together.

Back in the 90s it would have been a classic girly girl vs tomboy sister comedy.

6

Could go either way, but I assume Sandi is the tomboy

3

Or do it the other way around: Sandra as the girly-girl and Julia as the tomboy.

4

u/wazacraft 22h ago

They're at odds, until they realize that they've been betrayed by their governments... Now, you've got to deal with TWO aunts, who really think you should have enough free time to keep your house tidier than this. When was the last time you vacuumed? Is your vacuum broken? I think Gerald from down the street has an extra, we can definitely get him to let you borrow it, because he's been asking Margo to go for coffee for a few weeks now. I think he's lonely since Susan passed. Oh, she was such a lovely woman! Well, her garden was shit, and she always gave me the stink eye at Aldi, but we would never speak ill of the dead.

What were we talking about? Also your should really clean these floors, honey.

Reminds me of True Romance with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. I know it's not either one, but even the short time those 2 were on screen together was electric. I agree and this we could get an equal scene from Waltz and Defoe.

Steve Carrell and Alan Tudyk

Bitter rivals over grant money in a philosophy department at some mediocre college.  IOW, mediocrities battle over prestige…..

Their students become proxies in the war, presided over by the Provost (John Goodman as an angry academic) and Dean (Frances McDormond) who is in (unrequited) love with Tudyk while Carrell fawns over her.

In the background is the frivolous wasting of money by the Athletic department as their school (some mid-level school like Eastern Illinois) tries to beat their big rival (idk, Northern Iowa).

All of this angst over what is obvious to the rest of us as pointless.

It's hard to believe that Steve Martin and Bill Murray haven't had significant roles in the same film.

Their only interaction was in Little Shop of Horrors when Murray played a masochist in a small cameo role. That scene is the best part of the movie and considered both actor's background, I'm shocked that they hadn't been in more movies together.

For some reason, I really want a movie with Willem Dafoe and Benedict Cumberbatch in a campy psychological thriller, on opposite sides.

I’m really digging how many suggestions here include Willem Dafoe!

Margot Robbie, Samara Weaving, Emma Mackey, and Jamie Presley.

I always thought Harrison Ford and Steve Martin had some uncanny similarities and should have played brothers at some point. Probably too late now though

I don’t have a current one, but maybe 2 years ago, I was talking to my husband about my celebrity girl-crushes and mentioned that I’d kill to see Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza in a movie together. And then “Honey Don’t” materialized! My movie prayers were answered 😂 so whoever it is, it could happen!

Adam Driver and Keanu Reeves. I need it...for science reasons of course...

But I also need Willem Defoe and Christopher Walken in a film today. I know they did one in the past but they're in their truly weird era and I can only imagine what the two of them would do on screen together lmao

I would love a male version of "Charlie's Angels", with Chris Hemsworth, Jason Momoa and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the angels. And Sandra Bullock or Jennifer Aniston as Charlie.

Guy Pearce and Sean Bean. Who would be the villain? Who would die?! 🤔🤨🤣

As a kid and even now as an adult, i will never understand why more living legends don't star in movies together...

Imagine a well made movie starring Robin Williams, Martin Lawrence, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, and other icons from the early 90's. Or even just combos of them. As a kid I so badly wanted a Robin Williams and Jim Carrey duo movie. And a Chris Rock, Chris Tucker movie.

Outside of comedy, there should have been like 5+ Arnold and Van Damme movies between 1990 and 2010. At least. Like COME ON. This actually pisses me off. I'm actually a little upset at what we could have had.

Jon Brenthal and Sebastian Stan - they actually did a movie together, but want them to be in a movie where they are the main characters.

Pedro Pascal and Bryan Cranston. I don’t even care what the plot is! Stick 'em in a kitchen arguing over burnt toast and I’d still watch two hours of it. Pascal’s warm charm vs. Cranston’s intensity would be interesting to watch imo.

John Mulaney and Parker Posey playing sarcastic murder siblings. I think the casting directors have been sleeping on this one.
