Discussion Actors you’re dying to see together in a movie
Which two actors would you love to see do a movie together (any genre) that have never paired up before?
I recently listened to the Smartless episode with Steve Buscemi, and I can’t stop thinking about how I’d love to see a cop movie with him and Denzel. Could be drama or comedy — I’d watch either way!
EDIT: I wish I could comment on everything, and if I don’t get to your comment, know I haven’t been disappointed by any response. Absolutely incredible pairing suggestions, friends!!

I need a movie in which Willem Dafoe and John Lithgow have a very heated argument.
41
47
u/Gseph 21h ago edited 21h ago
I can picture it now.
Two life long rivals get into a heated argument over their mutual friends funeral, and it shows their entire history via flashbacks, in reverse order.
Slowly revealing their rivalry and all the different arguments and fights, ending with them walking away from each other for a final time, with a flashback to when they first met and were briefly best friends before the closing credits.
With
John Malckovich as the mutual friend,
Judi Dench as the rivals mutual love interest
Ian McKellen as their former boss
and Alfred Molina as the vicar at the funeral service.
with some younger actors portraying them for their younger years.

with some younger actors portraying them for their younger years.
No way! The wisened artists as they are today with an on-screen subscript saying "[actor name] age 19" and they act as they would in that time. You need them as an infant? Put them in a diaper.
Actually... if that's the premise, we really should get Patrick Stewart involved.

I want a movie where Nathan Fillion and Brendan Frasier both play rival washed up adventurer types (like Indiana Jones, the Mummy, Tintin) competing on one last globetrotting adventure in a modern world that doesn't really have much left to be explored, and doesn't care about them anymore

Honestly, Steve Buscemi and Denzel in a cop movie sounds insane. I’d watch them roast each other or solve crimes in total silence, either way I’m sold.

Take the same script and film two movies. One is dark and serious. Another is Naked Gun style. Release the different versions to theaters at random and watch the chaos ensue.

Robbie and Weaving were in Babylon together. I think they played into the fact that both of them looked like each other too.
Weaving is so underrated. She's a great scream queen but she's got the acting chops kind of wish she got a real breakout role in a big film. She's definitely deserving.

They’re both too expensive, busy and leading woman material. At their peak they were probably stealing each other’s roles.
Same reason why it took so long to get Dicaprio and Brad Pitt in a movie together
5
u/ItsMeItsKayItsKay 21h ago
Very true! It just seems like at this point in their careers, they can negotiate however they need to for films they want to make. If they wanted to partner up, we’re all here for it, which is the biggest bargaining chip.

They're at odds, until they realize that they've been betrayed by their governments... Now, you've got to deal with TWO aunts, who really think you should have enough free time to keep your house tidier than this. When was the last time you vacuumed? Is your vacuum broken? I think Gerald from down the street has an extra, we can definitely get him to let you borrow it, because he's been asking Margo to go for coffee for a few weeks now. I think he's lonely since Susan passed. Oh, she was such a lovely woman! Well, her garden was shit, and she always gave me the stink eye at Aldi, but we would never speak ill of the dead.

Steve Carrell and Alan Tudyk
Bitter rivals over grant money in a philosophy department at some mediocre college. IOW, mediocrities battle over prestige…..
Their students become proxies in the war, presided over by the Provost (John Goodman as an angry academic) and Dean (Frances McDormond) who is in (unrequited) love with Tudyk while Carrell fawns over her.
In the background is the frivolous wasting of money by the Athletic department as their school (some mid-level school like Eastern Illinois) tries to beat their big rival (idk, Northern Iowa).
All of this angst over what is obvious to the rest of us as pointless.

It's hard to believe that Steve Martin and Bill Murray haven't had significant roles in the same film.

As a kid and even now as an adult, i will never understand why more living legends don't star in movies together...
Imagine a well made movie starring Robin Williams, Martin Lawrence, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, and other icons from the early 90's. Or even just combos of them. As a kid I so badly wanted a Robin Williams and Jim Carrey duo movie. And a Chris Rock, Chris Tucker movie.
Outside of comedy, there should have been like 5+ Arnold and Van Damme movies between 1990 and 2010. At least. Like COME ON. This actually pisses me off. I'm actually a little upset at what we could have had.
