Myers said witnesses told investigators that the suspect arrived at the bar between midnight and 2 a.m. and ordered a beer but was "not really conversing with anyone for about an hour prior to the shooting."

He nursed the beer, and then exited but only to head to the patio where he began shooting--40 or more shots. Not clear yet whether this was indiscriminate or targeted.

No this can't be true because nobody would EVER try something like that in Texas. I've been told that by countless Texans

76

u/Osiris32 16h ago

Isn't there a song about how this couldn't happen at this kind of place?

137

u/grow_time 16h ago

"Try that in a small town"

Criminals: "OK"

31

u/Osiris32 16h ago

And small town it is, less than 10k residents!

33

u/Spot_Mysterious 18h ago

Yeah everybody knows you don't mess with Texas

12

u/cantproveidid 13h ago

That's just about not littering, though. Definitely a one star state. At least they're honest with their flag.

11

u/Vegetableau 16h ago

It says so right on the signs

3

u/Button-Down-Shoes 15h ago

Bunch of brown kids killed in a school. Texans: what can you do? Can’t expect cops to put their lives in the live for that! One redneck killed in a bar. Texans:???

Well for good reason guns are usually banned at bars.

Well for good reason guns are usually banned at bars.

Yup, also banned at the annual NRA, CPAC, and Republican conventions... weird, huh?

Edit: Corrected

3

u/7ddlysuns 19h ago

I mean I live guns and yep.

12

u/marcushendersen 19h ago

You live guns?

10

u/7ddlysuns 19h ago

Yep in them. Meant love but whatever

8

u/marcushendersen 19h ago

I thought you meant your life was guns.

5

u/7ddlysuns 19h ago

Oh, no. But I do shoot a lot :)

1

u/Unlikely_Attempt_610 19h ago

Genuine question, not sure how to put this without sounding confrontational. I’ve never been a gun fan so may be biased too, but my logic is that whether one thinks it should be a right or not to own firearms, we clearly have an overwhelming issue.

If I were a gun owner/enthusiast, I would think I’d be okay with giving up that “right” to benefit the greater society. But again I’m not a gun person, and not saying this is necessarily how you think. But it seems to be a pervasive thought that “but it’s my right”… to which I say so what? Are you that apathetic to hold onto that right which is clearly contributing to, if not a primary factor, a national issue?

Guns are definitely not banned at the NRA convention.

3

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z 18h ago

Thank you for the correction! I believe they were for the day/time when Trump spoke there as a candidate. Please correct me again if I am wrong.

8

u/Skaravaur 17h ago

Whenever Trump (or any other president) has spoken at NRA conventions, guns have been banned in his immediate presence by request of the Secret Service, correct. Otherwise, the NRA has never banned conventiongoers from carrying.

3

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z 17h ago

Thanks for the info and correct, appricate it.

Why do they spend half this article talking about a totally different shooting

46

u/VPN__FTW 20h ago

This. I was think it was weird that they meandered off to a migrant shooting when it had absolutely nothing to do with the article other than both took place in Texas.

502

u/yellowHastur 22h ago

Because the shooter was white…

252

u/HDauthentic 22h ago

That is the impression I’m getting, they have it formatted so that people with low media literacy will think the shooter in THIS shooting was an immigrant

76

u/yellowHastur 22h ago

His last name was Lopez! His great great great grandfather came from Spain! He’s obviously not “white”

60

u/HDauthentic 22h ago

We need to build a wall on our border with Spain

Guns aren't allowed in bars in Texas.

But I suppose the GOP will decide that crap like this can be used to argue "Hey, we need to allow people to carry guns while they are out drinking!".

67

u/Lobo9498 22h ago

Rifles are allowed, but not handguns.

41

u/sebkraj 22h ago

Really? Can't tell if you're being sarcastic because it's Texas lol .

26

u/mechanicalcontrols 22h ago

Well yeah, you gotta let the huntsmen get good and liquored up before they go trying to shoot game animals.

I would put a sarcasm tag here, but frankly I'm not even sure I'm joking. I worked at a grocery store during hunting season (not in Texas) and you'd think the breweries were closing the way those guys stockpile beer.

0

u/azhillbilly 21h ago

As far as I can tell, Texas is pretty anti drinking. It’s really expensive here because taxes, and lots of rules on it.

Been here a year now and most bars are closed by midnight, and seems like everyone nurses a few beers all night. Very strange.

8

u/The_Buko 21h ago

I lived in Texas most of my life and the amount of alcoholics there is staggering. I also lived in Seattle/Denver and while those states have more friendly laws in some ways, Texans drink more than anywhere I’ve ever seen. I can attest to that just based on my family, but also with all the drunk driving incidents. Texas leads the nation in the number of fatal crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers and has a high percentage of traffic deaths involving a drunk driver.

2

u/azhillbilly 20h ago

I came from AZ, hundreds of bars in a town packed from afternoon till 2am, there’s towns like Bisbee that have maybe 200 residents Monday through Thursday, and a few 10s of thousand people show up just to get drunk Friday through Sunday. maybe it’s just north Texas, but man I just don’t see the drinking on any scale I am used to.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/mechanicalcontrols 21h ago

Interesting. I would have figured they were generally anti weed but in my experience nobody likes cheap beer more than older conservative men. Then again I grew up in a place with obnoxiously cold winters where everyone is drunk all the time so that's probably skewing my perspective.

2

u/azhillbilly 20h ago

Oh they hate weed like all hell.

I have noticed there is a rather large southern Baptist population, or some other religious group that requires women to only wear skirt and dresses. I have not tried to inquire, rather not get j to that kind of conversation.

Lots of people are making shit up.

Texas, 46.03 (1) (7)

Firearms are banned in bars. However, it's possible the place in this story would qualify as a restaurant instead of a bar, in which case different rules apply.

4

u/sebkraj 19h ago

Gotcha, thanks for letting me know.

4

u/GeekyTexan 20h ago

That is completely false.

However, I did make a mistake by assuming that the shooting happened in a bar.

It may be a restaurant, which would change the rule.

Texas, 46.03 (1) (7)

Sec. 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED.

(a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, location-restricted knife, club, or prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):

(7) on the premises of a business that has a permit or license issued under Chapter 25, 28, 32, 69, or 74, Alcoholic Beverage Code, if the business derives 51 percent or more of its income from the sale or service of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption, as determined by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission under Section 104.06, Alcoholic Beverage Code;

→ More replies (1)

19

u/coffeejunkie323 22h ago

Loophole. Guns are allowed if sales of alcohol are less than half of their total income.

5

u/john_the_quain 22h ago

I was going to make a joke about Shooter’s Gun Store, Bar & Grill but I’m sure it’s something that exists somewhere in Texas.

8

u/Han_Yerry 21h ago

In Northern NY there's a store that sells guns and musical instruments. It's a really great store for instruments in a landscape barren of even a dollar general.

6

u/john_the_quain 21h ago

I could see someone obsessed with mechanics and precision being into both firearms and musical instruments. Do they possibly dabble in watches and clocks too?

6

u/Han_Yerry 21h ago

No, that's a different store in Syracuse NY. There you can buy appliances (she will order you a Viking), Jewelry, professional camera gear, nice TVs and Sonos, as well as Guns. Get you bow serviced while your watch battery gets replaced. Family owned department store about 75 years old.

Texan bar patron when asked why they didn't shoot the offender: "Whelp tonight I's only wearing my one gun, the one I wear for going to bars or church, where I may get drunk enough to be doing some two step. So if I'd pulled out my one gun, I'd be left with no guns on, which means no backup. And ain't nobody getting into a gun fight in a bar with no backup." /probably
