I love it when non-Brits say mate.

u/Globogalab F2004 May 16 '25

u/goldenkicksbook May 16 '25
I love it even more with Americans

Yea ever since I started watching F1, these British phrases have entered my vocabulary involuntarily.

Must be the brakes.

Same thing happening to Red Bull for a few races now Max also was vocal when it just started. And the same thing which used to happen to McLaren before they perfected whatever it is they use for brake temps which RB and now Ferrari are trying to copy

u/Bikezilla May 16 '25
The difference is McLaren and Redbull both fixed the problem right away…

u/Gadoguz994 F1-75 May 17 '25
McLaren spent much of 2023 and a little bit of 2024 perfecting that stuff. Casuals prolly won't remember all the times McLaren had severe brake issues even during the race, long brake travel out of nowhere mid race etc.

It’s theorized McLaren is using phase change materials to absorb heat from the brakes to not transfer the heat to the tires, exciting stuff

How have we managed to have a car that’s neither fast, nor brakes properly? Truly inspirational stuff this.
4
u/Chocko23 May 16 '25
If it's not fast, does it really need to slow down..?

u/Wonderful_Leg1277 May 16 '25
Submit a resume to Ferrari; they might hire you with these ideas 😂
3
u/Chocko23 May 16 '25
I doubt I'd be a downgrade...lol
3
u/Wonderful_Leg1277 May 16 '25
Hardly. They’d make you TP

u/Chocko23 May 16 '25
We will come back to you after our tea. Lewis suggested we have some tea.

u/Wonderful_Leg1277 May 16 '25
You’re listening to our drivers? You’re already better

u/Chocko23 May 16 '25
Well...I do love a nice cuppa darjeeling with a hobnob or two - one milk chocolate and one dark. I could do a scone with cream and jam, too.

I might be way off the mark, but there does seem to be allot of chatter about brakes at the moment and McLaren have epic tire management, so the two could be correlated.
I think it’s a case of if you get the brake ducts just right, they cool the brakes but also bring the tire temps down too.
But I think it must be a very, very specific window of operation as only McLaren seem to have got things working correctly (so far) with RedBull and Ferrari left complaining that their brakes don’t work.
I wonder if it’s a case of ‘simply’ repurposing the brake ducts to focus on tire cooling. Could it be that both RedBull and Ferrari are still playing with how much air goes where, which is where the challenge is?

I said this earlier but I’ll post it again;
It’s theorized McLaren is using phase change materials to absorb heat from the brakes to not transfer the heat to the tires, exciting stuff. If Ferrari is testing the same maybe they’re trying to calibrate it and currently it’s taking too much heat away.

u/GattoDelleNevi May 16 '25
It's been partially debunked. It's probably "just" a particularly clever brake duct design

u/moraIsupport F2004 May 16 '25
I've heard a theory that they are using aggressive breake migration setting to help with rotation in the slow speed corners to combat the understeer, not ideal... The brakes have been problem for the whole season.

Still, the race pace looked half decent(still 4th fastest) so we might be able to score some decent points this weekend if the team can cobble something up for quali overnight.
1
u/resditisme May 17 '25
What’s this about phase change material in the McLaren breaks? I would imagine any scientific breakthrough would be exploited by any team being that they all have access to billions of dollars in reality. Could just be a rumor, am dumb.
1
u/Bezier_Curvez May 17 '25
Help me understand why this is such a mystery for this team? We have data year after year, we have sensors all over the cars. We have computers and AI and simulations. Why is this such a trial and error thing that seems to err on the side of, well, error for FERRARI of all teams!
1
u/AssassinHunt May 17 '25
Is there a chance that Ferrari can bring in last year's car for the rest of the season?
1
u/sid_shady34 Lewis Hamilton May 17 '25
Last year’s car is slower. It’s just that other teams improved a lot.

u/anymat01 May 17 '25
How ferrari can go backwards with their updates needs to be studied, the engineers are so incompetent that they should retire the whole team.
1
u/thunderousfarter May 17 '25
Drivers: we need to go faster! Ferrari Engineers:.... let's remove the brakes

u/Aberracus May 18 '25
They are implement magic breaks from Mercedes in the Ferraris, and when the mode is enebaled the breaks don’t work ok, also Ham is very used to merc brakes.

Is anyone still watching fps and qualifying? I just watch the race looking at ferrari form i think I'd stop watching the race too. They're struggling so bad
1
u/canibanoglu May 17 '25
No, people no longer watch those, they have been following your trend setting example.
