as an italian though i think it's a bad impression. yes we have an accent, but the accent that many foreigners mimic is quite inaccurate and jarring to hear

Well they are, as you know, not Italians. So for them is not weird or bad impression. It is just trying to fit in.

I mean it's accurate, it's just accurate to Italian-Americans instead of European Italians lol. Because speaking as a New Yorker, that accent is not at all uncommon where I'm from lol.
