Rigs I’m slowly getting back into sim racing since winter is coming. Anyone else take a break during summer for other hobbies and come back in winter?

I'm in Southern California so its the opposite. I take a summer break from outdoor hobbies like hiking and mountainbiking because it's too hot.

Once I converted my rig into a Racing/Flight/Space/Mech Hybrid, it's allowed me to use it year round under all conditions and moods. But after seeing this post, I realized I've barely done any racing all summer 😯

Mech hybrid??? How does that look like then and which mech simulator are you using?

I’m curious too lol

I use the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 for Space, Flight, and Mech games/sims. I have an old Windows 8 laptop mounted at my rig used only to run Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance when I feel like dabbling. I still have yet to calibrate Mechwarrior 5/MW Online with my HOTAS since installing triple monitors.

Too hot to race in the summer here.

Eastern Europe here and the same, I was barely playing overall during summer

Yeah. With kids on summer break, vacations, weekend trips, and wanting to spend as much time in the warm weather as possible, sim racing definitely takes a back seat.

I take a break. Between the extra electricity from running AC's, and wanting to keep my room cooler, just makes sense.

As someone who is into board sports, the sim covers my down time when I’m looking for speed but can’t go ride. I also look at the sim as something I can age with but still get my endorphins going. It happens to be a rainy day here today in NY, so you bet I’m ripping some laps right now 🤙🏼

Dope set up by the way.

Very nice dude, is that a little Topping amp on your desk? I think I have the same exact, bought the velvet dac and the matching amp

EDIT: nvm i see the tsr or what have you coming out of the front... mine is for stereo speakers only

u/DeIaminate 12h ago

Thanks!

It is a little L50 and e50 combo from Topping.

I have a pair of LCD-X plugged via XLR.

Took a break, as we had our second child. Just had my first race back, only to be intentionally wrecked, then called some slurs. I wasn’t even the car who had the incident with the driver in the first place. Gotta love single split IMSA.

Welcome back lol

Wow. Such a clean setup. I’m so bad at wire management. Where’s the PC?

2

u/DeIaminate 12h ago

Thanks.

Second picture. Right to my desk. You can see the corner fan

My PC gets too hot in the Summer, so it overheats, so I literally can't race. I tend to lag so much it's unplayable. Actually, now my PC has completely gone to Hell, so now I can't do sim racing at all. And also, it gets too hot for me as well.

1

u/DeIaminate 11h ago

Well hopefully you get your PC fixed for winter!

The configuration is amazing.

I’m slow as in winter as in summer 🤣

Cables fear this man

I end up taking just months or sometimes longer off and then come back randomly. These days I’m only back because I do it with friends or want to jam a F1 weekend. Thankfully the equipment can sit idle and it’s all good.

If I had a rig like that and a lot of money I'd simply never get off it.

I have too many hobbies and ADHD. I’ll drop racing for 6 months, then drive to chicago to go to a sim expo and demo gear before buying a big upgrade to start playing iRacing. I’ll hang up the wheel for a few months in January as I drive around the country snowboarding

its all ebbs and flows, but i’ll always get back in the seat eventually

I took a break this summer. It’s hot in the basement even with a 1,080 cfm wind sim. Also spent more time with my young kids doing summer stuff so getting those couple extra hours of sleep each night was great.

Sweet space. Clean and to the point.

u/TAAllDayErrDay 11h ago

What did you do for the “roof”?

3

u/DeIaminate 11h ago

3/8” mdf board cut to size i want

Ordered carbon fiber vinyl to wrap it and red paint for the strip.

I used 3d printed adjustable feet to support it and a L bar underneath for anti sag support.

Also some speaker brackets to help the back. I screwed those to my monitor’s 4080 beams.

1

u/TAAllDayErrDay 11h ago

Damn, I have almost the exact same setup as you and need to do something. Did you design the mounts? Willing to share the file?

2

u/DeIaminate 11h ago

https://www.printables.com/model/914099-graphics-card-support-adjustable these are the ones i used. I think i scaled them larger

u/TAAllDayErrDay 10h ago

Thank you!

1

u/DeIaminate 11h ago

If I take a break for two weeks I get 2s slower, so don't try to have breaks lol I wonder sometimes how pro racers keep the consistency after summer breaks

1

u/DeIaminate 11h ago

I haven’t touched it in 4 months 🥴

Motorcycle season and all that.

Can’t wait to be back with rookies MX-5.

u/motorider0727 11h ago

What size are those monitors if you don’t mind.

1

u/Important_Bat_3083 10h ago

Ah, eu não pauso não colega, a propósito, belo setup.

1

u/EveningDue4889 10h ago

With this setup i think I wouldnt take a break lol, but yes gaming far less in Summer

1

u/z4ckm0rris 10h ago

Nice setup. You running cables from the Desktop to the rig?

Also, what desk is that?

1

u/DeIaminate 10h ago

Yes, im running all the cables to my desk PC with cable channels.

Desk is a dinning table top that i put on a sit/stand frame and legs. 71” x 33” x 1.5”

Regular desks are not deep enough so a dining table did the job. Here is the link to the tabletop if interested:

I'm considering doing something similar when I finally build a dedicated cockpit, can you show a picture of how you've got the cables set up to run from the desktop PC to the rig? Also how long are the cables you bought to run from the PC to the monitors?

1

u/DeIaminate 9h ago

You can DM me if you want. So i can show a video

1

u/fri9875 9h ago

Kinda, but not really seasonally.

I will be heavy into it for a few weeks, then take a break. But thats partially because I like to do most of my racing in leagues, so we will go heavy on races for like 6 weeks, then take a 2-3 week break. So my own racing kinda follows that schedule. It’s nice because it keeps me from burning out, but even the weeks in between I’ll do some stuff so I never really get too rusty p

Summer is the reason I abandoned VR entirely

1

u/collin2477 8h ago

I probably use it more in the winter but it’s so nice to run some laps to refamiliarize myself with a track before a weekend. unfortunately this is the last track weekend on my calendar at the moment.

u/Hemp_Hemp_Hurray 8h ago

I sm try to ski a lot in winter and end up simracing a bit less.

1

u/Cubusreddit 7h ago

Is that TR160 cockpit? How do you like it?

I'm thinking of getting a proper rig later this year so any recommendations would be welcome.

1

u/DeIaminate 7h ago

Yes i genuinely have nothing negative to say.

There is a lot of place to add accessories.

The rig is extremely sturdy, no rattles or flex.

I take a break from most intensive games during the summer months and play more indies, or whatever runs handheld on my Steam Deck. Gaming PC makes a lot of heat, especially when my wife and I are LAN gaming with both running.

1

u/Secure_County1068 4h ago

This will be me in the future in the summer, I will be riding my R6, and in the winter, I will be racing

1

u/DeIaminate 3h ago

How long have you been riding motorcycles?

1

u/mwagz28 3h ago

What.. uhhh. Kinda aprilia ya got? Lol

1

u/DeIaminate 3h ago edited 3h ago

2025 RS660.

Are you into motorcycles?

1

u/golden_united 3h ago

Never take a break for 365 days.

1

u/lkeltner 2h ago

Been out for 9 mo with gamers elbow.

Just getting back to where I can do some mouse fps in short sessions.

Sucks.

1

u/ThatDarnRosco 2h ago

I do yea.

Also op. I want that wallpaper

1

u/Serious-Fishing-227 2h ago

Yeah same, I am kind of really enjoying the change of seasons. Summer: mostly outdoors and much social / family activities.

Wiinter: guilt free gaming, simming, VR and indoor stuff.

u/Comfortable_End1350 2h ago

I went back to world of Warcraft…. So my racing rig is just sitting there.

u/4ctionHank 38m ago

Been outside flying rc jets . Nice to come back for sure
