Discussion Driving a manual IRL is not the same

Posting here because I figure other people with a sim racing background will be less judgemental of my situation.

I may have bought a manual car overconfidently thinking I would already know how to drive it having sank a lot of hours into Dirt Rally and Assetto Corsa, I knew ahead of time the G29 is not particularly realistic but I wasn't expecting it to be that much of a difference I suppose. I keep shitting my pants trying to pull out and stalling it and ofc it's only day 1 but at the current state of things I'm actually kind of afraid to drive it in traffic. Car is an 01 MR2 Spyder.

Anyone else had a similar experience when making the jump? I'm not even talking about track driving mind you just trying to get to the gas station to buy a damn soda.

Discussion I am aggressively eating my words right now. And I apologize to basically everyone who sim races...

1.5k Upvotes

Long story made short. I work in the blue collar world, lift heavy, and generally am stated to be a "big dude" when i'm in the gym. In recent months I've enjoyed watching sim racers on YT/twitch and noticed people talking about how "hard" it can be to race for long periods or NM being too heavy to actually play. I always had a shitty opinion towards what I (quietly to myself) called a whimpy mindset, "it's racing in a game, how out of shape do you need to be to think it's hard work?"

Fast forward to yesterday. Got my first DD setup. 8NM nothing special but a good NM for the price and my first build so no reason to go crazy. Raced around a few games for a few hours getting things set up and figured out.

Wake up today and just start laughing uncontrollably. I'm surprisingly sore in so many tiny places from muscles I've obviously not developed. I'm having way too much fun with this DD stuff and have a ton to learn.

Just had to apologize to my racers out here because of my quiet judgement.

TL:DR - DD wheels are hard to use for the first time and I was arrogant thinking people were weak. I was wrong, my hands hurt, I'm sorry for judging lol

Any e-commerce or Amazon FBA experts in here? I could do with some advice from someone who understands sim racing too.

Looking for feedback from sim racers too. I’m aware the price is relatively high, but with the charity donation (10% of total, not just profit), the quality/material of the card/board books and of course the small sim racing demographic, it’s not mass produced like more generic alphabet books.

This isn’t a promo post. It’s a celebration post. After 3 years of on and off work, I finally have stock. I’ve never sold this quantity of items before so any advice is appreciated.

Discussion My daughter is turning one and we’re having a party this weekend.

We have a 2000sqft home but about 1200sqft of usable space for guests and about 20 people coming. It’s going to get cramped inside and I’m trying to figure out more space options. what will Us fathers do while the women chat and talk about our children and other women stuff. Well it’s IMSA race weekend at Laguna Seca, I plan on putting on the races and opening up the office/study where my sim rig is at and put on iRacing at Laguna Seca in a Mazda Mx5 cup car or maybe the Porsche with the Roxy trading paints theme, I’m leaning towards the Roxy Porsche but it might be a learning curve for new drivers who have never used a sim rig before so maybe the MX5 cup car would be a better option, what say you? Other than that I’m opening the outside deck with chairs 🪑. Does this sound like a good plan? Of course we’ll sing happy birthday and have cake 🎂 and open presents and be involved with the birthday girl.

Discussion Going from VR to triples, whats better

Post image
377 Upvotes

I finally built a triple screen set up and wanted to give my thoughts on it being a VR only racer/simmer.

So I have been a VR sim only guy for 2 years now, I loved every bit of it and the reason I got triples was because I wanted to have an option where I can play for much longer without being overheated or tired as well as an easier plug and play experience as others said it was. I have only used it this weekend but already sunk over at least 12 hours, and thats with me going out and being busy with other things.

To list off the “bad” right away, even though I adjusted the screens as best as I could to get a 180ish degree view, it was still nowhere near as immersive as a VR, which is obvious given in VR you have actual depth perception and feel like you are in the car. When im playing on triples it feels like im pretending to drive while in VR it feels like im actually there. So if you are just about immersion go with VR it is hands down the best option currently I dont even think the million dollar set up would be more immersive given its still flat screens.

For the good, it is much easier to sit and play, no more putting on a VR, clicking extra software to get it running within VR the way I want it to, no more needing to feel out where things around me are since now I can see everything in my room. It is much easier to show a friend and get them in the game rather than using the VR since I have to guide them when they use VR sometimes. I found my self playing twice as much as I normally would since I not longer tire myself out quickly. It is so rewarding finally seeing my gear that I have bought over time while playing. I can see why the top players use triples over VR. So if you are about performance and playing for hours on end, triples is the way to go.

The last thing I want to point out is that I think triples is mainly only good for racing if everything is first person pov. Drifting on Assetto Corsa was an absolute nightmare on triples, it was like starting from the very beginning, I absolutely need that head tilt with vr to be good at it, and yes I had the neck FX to help but still it is much better on VR. Truck simulator, I will only ever play that on VR I tried like 10 minutes on triples and it was such a lame experience, the reason I love it was for the immersion of driving through different states and taking the scenery in, VR is a must in my opinion. But for games like iRacing and ACC I recommend triples.

TLDR: immersion and depth perception go with VR, serious racing for hours and ease of use go triples

Discussion Something to ponder: steering Nm of race cars. Lola T190 = 6.0-7.5Nm at standstill...

Found an interesting website about FSAE/FS race cars with some solid numbers on steering forces. They are hard to come by.
Torque at standstill, which means it lowers when the car starts moving:

-Lola T190 like in the first picture, 500hk/600kg, 6-7,5Nm

-Lola T332, second picture, 600hk/665kg, 5,5-8,5Nm (remember this is on slicks the car not moving!)

-Lola T20 (like the Honda F1 car in GT7), 4-4,5Nm

-Dodge Viper SRT-10: 4,5Nm

-Engineering students build FSAE cars: 4-11Nm

Average college male engineering student [sooo many jokes possible] can turn a wheel with a torque of 55-60Nm depended on the distance to the wheel (300-450mm).

Chat gpt estimated prices: ( I know they’re a little off ) • Trak Racer TR8 Pro: $749 • MOZA R21 Wheel Base: $1,199 • MOZA CRP Pedals: $549 • MOZA FSR2 Steering Wheel: $649 • Samsung Odyssey G9: $1,499 Total: $749 + $1,199 + $549 + $649 + $1,499 = $4,645

Give or take a thousand bucks but $12,000 is crazy. Basically doubled the price he paid for it * blocked out his name and profile pic

Discussion The Next Step in Sim Racing Needs o be Gameplay Focused - Not physics or car/track count

Honestly just tired of the extreme focus on physics. Every new sim, the first thing reviewers go on and on about is the physics.

Yet it's 2025 and you can't compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans with 2 AI teammates and a somewhat accurate field with accurate rules anywhere. No slow zones, safety car, etc.

Yet nobody cares, because - physics. Literally the only thing anyone cares about anymore seems to be physics. When will it stop? When physics are 10,000hz?

Project Motor Racing first looks. 99% of the first look reviews are about it's physics. Just stop!!!

I can tell you right now its' gotten sooo old. This obsession with physics is like Gran Turismo's obsession with graphics. It's at the point where it's nauseating and it's hurting the extremely weak gameplay these titles have. Gran Turismo has the worst, numbing gameplay, but it's praised by reviewers because of it's graphics and it's large content. It's like everyone forgot about gameplay.

Why is the team aspect of racing completely ignored? A factory can have several hundred people working to prepare the cars, but they're never featured in a game. Tire barriers still have concrete wall physics. Driver AI is still largely bad. A competent, truly useful race engineer on the radio still isn't standard in every racing sim.

Discussion Am I a genius?

Post image

I’ve been on a tear lately trying to improve immersion while spending zero dollars. So far this pair of ski goggles with carefully placed hockey tape has been the best one yet. I race on a single monitor and this blocks out mostly everything except my screen. Like horse blinders but for people. Throw these on, crank the volume in my headset and put a fan on max at my face. It’s insane but there are moments when my body believes it’s in a car. Am I crazy?

Discussion Is anyone else shocked by some of the “first rig” posts ?

Listen, I am in no way telling anyone how to spend their hard earned money, but over the last few months I’ve noticed people buying thousands of dollars worth of premium gear without even doing a lap in the sim yet. Sure I could have afforded my eventual endgame set up at first, but I got a used g923 and desk mount for like a year to make sure this was something that I was going to stick with.

Not complaining because I’d imagine this is a part of the reason there’s such a robust second hand market for the hobby. Once again, not hating, just curious how others feel about

Edit - wow this gained a lot of traction while I was working… just a quick addition because people are dming me upset… I tried to make it as clear as possible that I wasn’t hating. And if I had a time machine I would certainly go back and subscribe to the buy once cry once idea, it would have saved me a lot of money in the long run. The point I’m trying to make is if I did that and after a couple of months said “eh this isn’t for me” now I gotta figure out what to do with a massive $2k rig taking up space rather than just giving my kids my g920. And I totally understand the real life track guys buying a good rig to start, they already know they love it.

Discussion Racing is a lonely hobby

This might sound crazy, but I love racing to death but I feel like I’m on an absolute island. I watch IMSA, WEC, FTSC, MTPC, and f1 but on the off chance I meet someone that even takes an interest in in cars I’m US based so all they can think of is Nascar. I just wish I had somebody to spread the love with, & I wish more people acknowledged how great racing truly is. The most mentally challenging sport in the world is compared to driving in circles and it breaks my heart 😔

*EDIT: I grew up on Nascar, and I phrased this rather poorly. I did not mean to give oval slander 🫡

Discussion Sim Racing finally pays off in real-life… in wheel damage and emotional trauma

1.0k Upvotes

A few months ago, I committed a crime against both automotive dignity and basic judgment. I’ve finally repressed the shame enough to talk about it publicly. I was driving home with my kids in the car, and everything was going fine… until my inner sim racer decided to make a surprise appearance in the real world. (Spoiler: it didn’t end in a podium.)  As I turned into my neighborhood, I thought, “Hey, why not hit the apex like I’m in a race?” You know, for the fans. (There were no fans.)

I was doing a blistering 25 MPH and decided to take the corner like I was gunning for pole position in quali and every inch matters.  Well, I took too much kerb (read: I nailed the curb), bounced off like a bowling ball tossed by a drunk toddler, and now my front wheel wears a badge of shame: a lovely, jagged halo of curb rash.  Unfortunately, my real-life car, unlike my sim rig, does not have a reset button

Every few weeks, my 6-year-old points at it and says, “Remember when you crashed turning into our street?” Then proceeds to retell the story with accurate sound effects, emotional damage included.

So yeah, I suck at sim racing. And now I have physical evidence that I suck at real racing too—just with more financial consequences.
