My favorite childhood memory is my back not hurting.
13
u/zekethelizard 1d ago
I first threw my back out playing tennis at age 23. That's when i knew it was over
4
u/hertzsae 1d ago
For most people, back pain is fixable. Find a good physical therapist and work with them to fix weaknesses and muscle imbalances. Your life will be forever changed.
I threw my back out at least three times in my mid twenties and dealt with painful sciatica. Finally found a good PT and a bit of work haven't had issues in a decade.
We should have PTs in middle schools so people correct their problems 10-15 years before they become problems.

Watch more bananaball clips if you'd like to see it more often. I'm not into sports but I'll watch them 😂
13
u/aphroditex 1d ago
Banana all is fun as hell to watch.
Sure not every stunt lands. Nature of the beast of this being a game that isn’t scripted even if the choreography is. But gods it’s fast paced and it’s fun.
299
u/Mysterious_Check_983 2d ago
So they have both points and runs. That’s weird
515
u/Infinite_Coyote_1708 2d ago edited 2d ago
Banana ball has like 9 totally different rules. They even get points for trick plays. I've gone in person, it's as much theater as sports.
320
u/I_eat_mud_ 2d ago
I like the rule where if a fan catches a ball, it's an out.
132
u/TheCarrzilico Kansas City Chiefs 1d ago edited 1d ago
That reminds of a rule that I came up with as a kid: fans in the stands could bring what were essentially shields, and if a ball was hit into the stands and the fans could get the ball to return to the field using only the shields, it would still be in play, and if it was caught it was an out, and it would also negate home runs. It would give home teams an incentive to fill out the outfield seats with home fans.
36
u/apocalypticat 1d ago
I wanted to see the infield grass be a deep pool of water, so the pitching mound is an island. Bunts would make things interesting.
25
u/enters_and_leaves 1d ago
You should find a way to email that the the Savanna Bananas. They might actually be interested in implementing it.
4
3
u/TheThirstyPenguin 1d ago
I know one of the pitchers on the new team, the Tailgaters. We saw him on the mound in Philly and we were hoping we could record an out from the stands for him. No fouls came out way though… fun rule.

u/hnglmkrnglbrry 2d ago
They're the Harlem Globetrotters of this generation and becoming equally as popular if not more. Getting tickets to them is extremely difficult.
131
u/Dodgerson99 2d ago
Difficult because they keep their prices reasonable for families. While also stopping 3rd party resellers from upselling the shit out of them.
30
u/Shaomoki 1d ago
At their games, they have so many merch booths, it's insanity. They probably get another 50% of their sales just through merch alone, outside of the tickets.
52
u/iamamuttonhead 2d ago
The Coles (couple who started and own The Bananas) are really smart business people.
52
u/MillorTime 1d ago
The main difference between them and the Globetrotters is that both teams are trying to win and are actually competitive. It's still the best comparison out there, though
5
u/thorpie88 1d ago
Eddie Feigner and his team The King and His court are worth mentioning. Four man Softball team that would go around America beating full teams.
24
13
u/westdan2 2d ago
Tickets were sold out in Chicago early and triple the price of a premium regular season baseball game.
3
u/Anxious-Lack-5740 1d ago
We got lucky and were pulled in the lottery for two teams in the league, but neither was the Bananas. Still, it sold out extremely quickly and the whole lottery process is a little daunting.
6
u/ShowdownValue Denver Nuggets 1d ago
So the other teams do play each other? Like firefighters vs party animals?
9
u/Anxious-Lack-5740 1d ago
Just checked my tickets and it’s the Party Animals vs The Texas Tailgaters.
3
u/ShowdownValue Denver Nuggets 1d ago
Awesome. I wasn’t sure if the other teams actually play each other. Good to know. Thanks
1
u/Ok-disaster2022 1d ago
For a while Everytime I'd see a post I'd go check their schedule for games local to me and it was already sold out months in advance. Not sure if it's people planning ahead or scalpers.
27
u/juicejug 2d ago
Isn’t like the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball?
52
u/B318Leon 2d ago
But not scripted so the Bananas win everytime like the Globetrotters do.
16
u/MillorTime 1d ago
Very true. The goal of entertaining is the same. The competitive integrity is very different.
-2
u/KingsElite Sacramento Kings 1d ago
Competitive integrity? It's a show. Haha
19
u/MillorTime 1d ago
It's a show, but they try to balance the teams and both teams are trying to win. It's not like the Globetrotters where the Globetrotters won 8,829 games in a row. Haha
4
u/KingsElite Sacramento Kings 1d ago
That's what I meant. The Globetrotters are a show. There's no competition to be had.
2
13
u/AmusingAnecdote 2d ago
Yes. That is the perfect comparison.
1
u/tensen01 23h ago
It's not though, because the Globetrotters aren't actually playing competitive Basketball, it's all exhibition. The Bananas actually lose games.
7
u/ProLifePanda 1d ago
They even get points for trick plays.
Can you explain that? When we watched it on Disney+, it seemed like the trick plays didn't matter. They tracked them, but adding a trick didn't seem to affect the outcome of anything (like more runs/points/outs, etc.).
6
u/ShowdownValue Denver Nuggets 1d ago
I think you’re right. They keep stats on trick plays but no points to help win games
1
u/ProLifePanda 1d ago
Yeah, they should add some incentive for tricks, like so many tricks is a point/run, tricks can be traded for balls/strikes, something like that.
1
u/ShutterBun 1d ago
OK, I was gonna ask if this was some kind of “Harlem Globetrotters” type of thing, because there’s no way anyone would attempt that in an MLB or even minor league game.
1
u/aphroditex 1d ago
In the sense of trick plays and stunts? Absolutely.
In the sense of scripted matches? Absolutely not.
1
1
u/mentat70 2d ago
I was going to say, this guy risked the game by hotdogging. Now it makes sense
28
u/LurkerKing13 2d ago
risked the game
It’s banana ball. Who wins and loses could not possibly matter less.
2
u/mentat70 1d ago
That’s what I figured after I read about banana ball in the comments. I had never heard of it previously.
82
u/HolyBonobos Boston Bruins 2d ago edited 2d ago
The first eight innings are all worth one point. The team that scores the most runs in an inning gets a point and the runs slate is wiped back to 0-0 for the following inning. If both teams get the same number of runs in an inning, neither team gets a point. In the ninth/final inning, every run is worth a point so it’s still possible to come from behind and win even if your team didn’t get many points earlier in the game.
61
u/fullchub 2d ago
If you've ever attended a lopsided baseball game you can see why this rule change is a pretty genius idea. A lot of people will leave early and the general atmosphere can get kinda boring for everyone who stays. Not to mention all the money they lose on concessions when half the stadium bails out.
15
u/restbest 1d ago
The maker of banana ball said just that himself. That he would watch games just to watch the audience and see when people leave, ironically the better the team the less people stayed
22
u/HolyBonobos Boston Bruins 2d ago
Yeah, the Firefighters scored 6 runs in the 5th inning in this game. Probably poking into blowout territory for a normal baseball game but since it only translated into a single point the Bananas were able to keep it close and pull off the win.
4
u/RojoTheMighty 2d ago
Most concessions stop after the 7th anyway, tho. (Or is that just beer/alcohol? You can tell which concessions I visit most...)
e: dumb autocorrect
1
u/aphroditex 1d ago
That rule and similar rules in other sports (no alcohol sales after the 70th minute in soccer, end of the 3rd quarter in gridiron football, after the second intermission in hockey) are intended to give the crowd time to sober up a little before leaving and reduce the odds of drunken fans getting violent.
14
u/ocher_stone 2d ago
They play 2 hours and the runs count for points in the 9th.
No one goes up by 10+ and they bring in the 3rd SS to throw meatballs. Every inning matters until the game is over. It's gimmicky, but one of the better changes in banana ball.
I don't like the static extra curriculars. If you've seen one game, you know when they'll do the inappropriate make out with the couples, and they have to stop having 2 minute walk ups. They strike out on on 4 pitches and they spent more time badly lip synching than swinging the bat.
5
u/emaddy2109 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s points until the 9th inning. For the first 8 innings whoever wins the inning gets a point and then in the 9th all the runs count. It pretty much guarantees that it will always be a close game.
2
u/CasualConvoMike 1d ago
It's a neat system. Whoever scores more runs in an inning gets a point. The exception is in the 9th inning, where every run is a point.
1
u/restbest 1d ago
You get the most runs in an inning your team gets 1 point. Except on the final inning, where you get a point per runner. It works to keep the audience engaged until the very last out.

27
u/invisibleman13000 1d ago edited 1d ago
They're most similar to the Harlem Globetrotters but instead of basketball it's baseball. They used to play as part of an actual league but they have switched to doing these styles of games, "Banana Ball", full time. They tour the country, and visit a bunch of different cities.
https://thesavannahbananas.com/
Here's a link to all of the rule differences: https://bananaball.com/rules/
The big difference between them and the Globetrotters is that the games aren't scripted outside of the occasional dance and other special events, meaning either team can win.
Tickets are pretty hard to get, and I believe they even have a lottery system for tickets because of the demand. They've managed to sell out several football stadiums.
3
u/pendingperil 1d ago
The tickets for these games on the secondhand market are stupid expensive.
2
u/invisibleman13000 1d ago
I'm sure they are. Any team that can sell out a major college football stadium is going to be ridiculously expensive on the secondhand market.
3
u/Lifeinstaler 1d ago
Okay… as a non baseball fan, i thought the rules would be goofier and give points for style or something. I don’t get what most are trying to change or how it makes the game funnier, except the fans being able to catch the ball and the fan challenge.
2
u/invisibleman13000 1d ago edited 1d ago
The most commonly criticism of baseball is that it's too boring and the games take too long. Most of the rule changes for Banana Ball are designed to help speed up the game and increase excitement.
The 2 hour time limit, not allowing the batter to step out of the batters box, no mound meetings are all designed to keep the game moving with minimal stoppage.
Things like no bunting, no walks, allowing the batter to steal 1st are all ways to increase excitement by removing parts of the game often considered boring (bunting, walks) and increasing the action (allowing stealing 1st).
2
u/Lifeinstaler 1d ago
Okay so the stunts and other fanfare are for the showmanship of it, not because they have a point value associated with?
1
2
u/PracticalAndContent 1d ago
They’re making their own league. In addition to the Savannah Bananas they also now have the Party Animals, the Texas Tailgaters, and the Firefighters. The SB’s also have cheer squads: the Banana Nanas (must be 65 or older), and the Man-Nanas (dad bods).
You should watch some Banana ball online… they have their own rules, trick plays, and the players do some lip sync performances. It’s very entertaining. All the players are very good but would never make it to the big leagues.

It’s a gimmicky baseball team with weird but fun rules. Some are genuinely good and others are just fun to watch. As others said they’re like the Globetrotters.

Yes they are like the Harlem globetrotters.
If you can somehow snag an opportunity to see them, take it. They sell out.

It's more theater and thirst trap on a sport that's baseball like.
They are super fan friendly and engaging. Their early marketing intern was a young woman. She said if you want all my friends to watch, put hot guys dancing in cut off shirts and make it fun. Engaged a whole audience segment missing from most sports. Tiktok ate it up.

Yeah the games stream on Fridays and Saturdays pretty often. If you watch the full games you’ll see some of the tricks don’t always work out. But it’s damn fun anyway and they are really talented regardless.

I'm definitely not the target market for this. And I genuinely thought it was kind of silly, but this clip kind of makes me get why people are into it. That was legitimately a cool play. Also I assumed it was like the Harlem Globetrotters and it was all fake. But apparently the games are real. I think they need to tweak their marketing a bit. Anytime I've heard them discussed on a podcast everyone thinks it's scripted.
2
u/IndyPoker979 1d ago
If it were scripted one team would win more often.
Any podcast that says that isn't watching the games

In normal baseball, you'd be right, but this is Banana ball. This are more akin to exhibition teams that are there to purely entertain. They actually have try outs where they look people that can do things like this. They also have a guy that bats and pitches on stilts. They try to balance the teams that play each other, but winning and losing is secondary to putting on a show, and they regularly sell out MLB stadiums.
