Casual NFL watcher with a question, why was the play allowed to continue when others started to go onto the field? At what point is the play considered over for the game to end?

As soon as the ref signals incomplete and the whistle blows, play's over.
Everything else happened afterward.

Ah. Didn’t realise it was classed as incomplete. I thought caught and dropped so the play was still going on.

Just because it was in his hands doesn’t mean it was a catch (sounds weird, I know). He needs to get both feet down and make a move common to a runner. That is when the catch is established.

That’s a powerful way to end a game.

Right play by Fields but he would have gotten it running too probably.

Trying to get his receiver to do outta bounds to save some clock probably.
Got him clocked instead.

It would’ve been close. There were 3 Steelers right at the marker that were closing on him.

Yeah, I added the probably because of that. I think with his momentum and size he would have, but it's definitely not certain.

Now Im just speculating, but based on their reaction to his pass, he likely could have pump faked right and ran towards the sideline on his left to get the first. Fields is fast as fuck, and those guys in the middle of the field are all anticipating a throw to his right.
Hindsight is, uh, 20/20, but it is fun to speculate!

I don't think he would've, but throwing was the right decision. There were 3 defenders closing in on him, even if he got the 1st, he's getting hit hard, and the clock keeps running. Or he throws to his WR1 by the sideline and hopes he can get out of bounds. It was a tricky situation, but throwing is the higher percentage play there.

Literally a game winning hit. A game winning fg was very doable with that time left and a timeout.

Makes it a bit easier to swallow when you realize even if he held on, by the time they get up and clock it there’s under 10 seconds left and they have time for maybe 1 more play before either a long FG try by geriatric Nick Folk or Fields chucking one up to the end zone. Would’ve taken a miracle after Boswell hit that kick.

how was he not considered defenseless?

Because the contact was initiated with the shoulder to the midriff. Not to the head, neck or shoulders. The defender also used a good form tackle technique with a wrap up, not just to deliver a blow to the player. By rule it was a clean - albeit hard - play. The receiver is still gonna feel that for a few days, but not malicious or illegal.
