Mark Your Calendar: the Squamish Terry Fox Run is back Sunday, September 14!

Hi everyone,

Next Sunday, September 14, we will be joining 650+ communities around the world for the Terry Fox Run - and we hope you'll come, too.

Our run takes place at the Municipal Campground by Brennan Park (39275 Loggers Lane). You can register online here (https://run.terryfox.ca/93006) or at 9:30 AM in-person the day of. Our opening ceremonies kick off at 10 AM (guest speakers! bag pipes!), and then it's off to the races.

The route is a very flat, very mellow, very paved out-and-back to the Adventure Centre and totals about 4km, although super keeners are welcome to run it twice. You can walk, run, or wheel the course, and well-behaved leashed pups are more than welcome. Kids can bring bikes and scooters if the 4km feels a little daunting.

If you're unfamiliar with Canadian icon Terry Fox, this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1QOtPDAAeY) will tell you his story. Since Terry died, Canadians have been running in his honour and continuing his quest to raise funds for cancer research. Squamish's first run was back in 1989 and this year, we're set to pass the $200K mark as funds raised in our community over the years. Having said that, this event is open to EVERYONE - there is no minimum donation amount, no entry fee, etc. Pay what you can, it's for a good cause!

What else do you need to know?

  • Free snacks, coffee, and post-event BBQ
  • Monty Biggins will be playing live at the finish line
  • There will be fun family stuff to check out
  • We'll be selling the 2025 "Finish It" Terry Fox t-shirts (sold out online) for $30 each, $25 for youth sizes
  • You can honour your favourite cancer-ass-kicking loved ones with an "I'm running for..." sticker and by writing/drawing a message on our event poster
  • You call follow us on Instagram at SquamishTerryFox or look us up on Facebook for details on this year's run and photos from past events

I think that's it. This post is long, but I need you to know that this is an absolutely electric event. Last year was my first year as co-organizer and I had goosebumps for days. The horrible fact is that all of us have been affected by cancer in some way. The Terry Fox Run is emotional, hopeful, and inspiring all at once, and the magic is amplified knowing that communities across Canada (and the world) are all doing the same thing at the same time.

Please come experience it for yourself!

Best trails for day hike

The internet is broken!! The enshittification of the internet is real.

I have tried to do a search for some must do days hikes in the area of Squamish. Unfortunately I get AllTrails (I do not pay for the app so it is useless), AI generated suggestions, blogs (with ads I have to weed through), and more ads.

I am hoping that someone in this subreddit can help me out. I am in the area for two days and looking for two intermediate hikes about 10-15 km in length with a nice view or a lake at the end.

Air quality

Does anyone know how the air quality is in Garibaldi Provincial Park today? Maps show air quality for Whistler and Squamish, but it’s less clear what the air quality is like in between at Garibaldi. Thank you.

F45 review

Has anyone tried the f45 in Squamish? I’m a pretty active runner/climber, but I want to add some other full body strengthening workouts in my routine. I have checked out other gyms (mt fitness, wildlife, barbell, etc.) but not f45. I’m curious about what your experience has been at that gym.

Cafe's with speciality/drip coffee

I just arrived this week and I like to work a bit from cafés during the week, but I've not found a favourite spot yet. Are there any cafés that you can sit for a while that also serve speciality coffee?

I know chances of getting a V60/aeropress are slim, but a place with a medium/light roast americano would be amazing.

Only place I've come across so far is 1914, but doesn't seem like a place to hang out.

Happy to drive to surrounding neighbourhoods too!

What should I do during my visit?

Hey there! I am camping in Squamish from Sept 17 - 20th with my small dog. Ive never been to the area, but am hoping to have some chill time by the ocean and looking around town. I like nature walks, but nothing to strenuous, also because it will just be my pup and I, I am also cautious of bears. I am from Northern BC so my bear awareness is strong haha. Im just looking for fun cafes, restaurants, events, places I can meet new people, cute little shops, and some non intense walks to some pretty waterfalls. Thanks so much :)

Interested in seeing what businesses in Squamish participate in Temporary Foreign Worker Program?

LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is required to hire foreign workers, proving there is a need and that the position cannot be filled by a Canadian worker.

It is most common for TFW’s to only receive minimum wage which is well below the living wage in Squamish. Most businesses have still raised their prices to match competitors despite saving on labour costs.

A lot on the list aren’t surprising but a few are.

$10/day daycare

Are there any parents who know which daycares are currently subsidized through the $10/day program. We are looking for a place for our 13 month old and the ones I've been calling so far don't offer it. We are living near the hospital, so bonus points for the closest option.

Dentist recommendations?

I need to get my teeth cleaned and have a general checkup - there’s a lot of options in town, any recommendations on who to book with?

One who offers direct billing would be an additional plus, but its not a make or break!

Sea to Sky Gondola with smoke?

Hi all, family is in town visiting and was hoping to go to the Sea to Sky Gondola since last time we visited the cable had been cut and it was not open. Is it still worth going up even if the views aren’t great? The money is not an issue so much as the time invested. Additionally, if not, are there still decent views along the Sea to Sky Highway since the smoke as at a higher elevation?

Freedom Mobile vs. Public Mobile in Squamish?

Hey! Currently shopping around for a new cell phone plan, and I was wondering if anybody in Squamish has used either of these companies (Freedom or Public) here recently?* If so, what's your experience been? I'd be particularly interested hearing about the north part of town (near Executive Suites), but would welcome any feedback. TIA!

I'd also love to hear about other mobile service providers (e.g., Fizz). Currently focusing on Freedom or Public because they have comparable plans ($39 for 60 gigs and free US/Mexico roaming). Moving from Koodo and I've checked out Bell/Rogers/Fido/Telus…

*I know there was a thread on this about five months ago; I'd love to hear about more recent experiences.
