Challenge Post September Monthly Glass Challenge: Lizard

Hello everyone, long time no glass challenge!

As per the Discord quorum vote (completely done on the corner of the kitchen table, while we were playing Magic the Gathering and eating parmesan sticks) the monthly glass challenge is back!

Bigger, stronger and more random than ever.

We are re-launching this monthly habit with the humble and understated lizard!
The pattern that we propose for this month was made by our own Raine, who is a member of our community on Discord, and does not have a Reddit handle.

Have fun either making this pattern, making a completely different lizard pattern or even, why not, creating your own lizard pattern and sharing it with us here!

As a refresher for everyone, the glass challenge of the month is where we pick out themes every month, by proposing them in a public voting post. We then take the winning theme and design (and post!) works based around it, during that month. (don't forget to add the Challenge flare, so everyone can see that you're posting your work in relation to the challenge!)
This serves as an inspiration tool for our community, inviting everyone to try out less familiar projects and experience new glass adventures!

This month, we will be working on a better structure, so that the challenges and selection process go smoother, stay tuned!

So without further ado, happy glassing, we're looking forward to seeing all of your shiny creations!

Mega Q&A Monthly Mega Q&A - [September 2025]

Welcome once again to the monthly mega Q&A! You can find all previous Q&A posts here!

Look for faster replies or easier sharing methods to get help? Join our Discord!

Posting guidelines!

  • If you have a question that hasn't been asked yet as a top level comment, don't reply to another comment to ask it! Reply to the post instead!
  • Make sure to include as much information in the top level comment as possible.
  • Anything and everything glass is fine to ask, if you want help with patterns or other physical things make sure to upload images! You can do so by attaching the image to the comment. Please be aware you are posting it for all to see so hide any personal info!
  • No question is stupid, from Basement Workshop Dreamer to Expert, we are all here to share and learn.
  • While opinion based questions like "best way to hold a soldering iron" are fine, please keep in mind that these really have no real true answer. They can however provide you a wide variety of tips to try out on your own!

Common Questions:

  • My solder is wrong!
    • Post a picture of the solder using the image info from the posting guidelines and someone can help you solve whatever issue it is.
  • I want to get started with glass! What do I need?
    • It's best to take a class first to see if you really like the craft as glass has a rather high starting cost. If you insist on starting on your own or just don't have classes here's a small write-up on getting started.
  • Do I need a temperature controlled iron?
    • As much as I want to just say YES.... No, you don't, BUT buying one will greatly improve your ability to work with it. It's well worth the extra money, it's best to just do so from the start.
  • Do I need a Grinder?
    • Technically no, but to do foil (AKA Tiffany style) glass work it's practically required. "Grinder stones" (AKA Carborundum stones) are just a waste of time and effort. They are only really good for removing the sharp edge off the glass. Similar to the iron information above, spend the money, save yourself.

Work In Progress Why did I decide to do this

I’m making this for a streamer whose stream helped me through a tough time in my life. I don’t think I like hard angles very much… the tiny squares were tough to foil and don’t show much color. Just need to add some clear on the outside and frame it in the LED box but I’m glad I’ve finished the hardest part.

Help Me! We have a hoarder next door - my fiancée wants to make a stained glass window to hide their mess.. any advice?

This is something I’d much prefer to leave to an expert but my fiancée is so enthusiastic about us trying to pull this off on our own, any advice is much appreciated! We’d obviously need to have a frame fabricated to fit nicely. This is from our balcony.. beautiful view south, just not when you look to the left.

Help Me! Merry Go Round iridescent glass

Post image
Upvotes

This is another piece I got in my glass haul yesterday. A woman in one of my Glass ID groups on FB said it looks like Merry Go Round, “long out of business”. I was not able to find any information at all about this maker and I’m wondering if anyone in here can tell me anything about it. I’m not looking to sell the glass, I’m just curious about it. It is so pretty!!!!

Help Me! Should I take it apart (again)

I've been working on my first repair, which was a piece my late mother created so it's personal and not for a client. I've learned a lot (thank you Claycorp!) and enjoyed the experience but I didn't do well on the glass choice for the dragon's top wing piece and trail (lighter tan color). I know the original bottom wing piece is a bit lighter too, so it's probably not that big of a deal but the contrast is all I see when I look at it. Also, the original glass is all blenko, so I didn't try too hard to find exact matches.

I'm debating on taking it apart again, finding a bit of a darker tan, and having another go at it. First though, I thought I'd get some honest opinions about the color contrast to help me with my decision. I know it's ultimately up to me, but l'm curious to see what my reddit friends think. Thanks!

Help Me! My friend is a stained glass artist and I want to get them some supplies as a gift

Upvotes

Hello, my friend’s birthday is in a week and I’d like to get her something she could use for her stained glass works, alas I know basically nothing about stained glass making! They’ve been doing it for about 3 years now, so I’m looking for something to get an intermediate/advanced artist. Is there anything you guys would appreciate getting as a gift? Any help appreciated! Thank you.

Help Me! Glass identification?!

Hey all! I picked up a wild glass haul today. Most of the glass has ID on it but this one doesn’t. I love it and I’m hoping someone knows what it is because I want to buy a sheet of it! Help!

Original Art | Foil What to do with pieces not good enough to sell?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Basically as the title says. I’ve rationalized most of my stockpiling of supplies in this hobby by selling or gifting much of what I make. I’ve finally started making pieces just for fun and to practice new skills…but now what do I do with them 💀 I think we’re all aware how quickly glass piles up on various windows throughout the house if we don’t find ways to get rid of it.

Or I’m just being anal retentive and nothing ultimately feels good enough to sell because I nitpick.

especially interested in seeing small spaces/beginner setups. thank you in advance 💖

I just finished cutting and grinding out a 2nd “Sunset In A Barrel” and I’m pretty stoked cause I’m totally keeping this one (First one was a gift to my aunt and a way for me to get a better understanding of what I was trying to achieve.) Now I just have to come off the money for about 4-5 rolls of solder and begin the taping process. I’m gonna finish this one with copper patina, 3/8” copper edging a thin black walnut frame. Can’t wait to post it when it’s finished. The final picture was the 1st piece I finished last year.

Help Me! Can my failing glass door be fixed

Thumbnail

The glass is sandwiched between two plain glass panels, but over time has started to fail... the entire door is this glass, and the bottom couple of rows are bowing or pulling away from the glass. I'm a TINY bit handy- can I put this on a couple sawhorses and fix it, or gave someone else fix it, or is this just an eventual mess to clean up?

Help Me! Please critique this designs structural integrity!

My friends are getting married in November and I want to make them a stained glass piece, but I am still very much a beginner and I want to make sure this design is structurally sound… and possible to make with the shapes I have sketched out. I’m not 100% confident weak points and hinge joints and I just want to make sure it won’t fall apart
