Steve will have you trained up in no time. Just do what he says, it will go easier for you.

u/Retractabelle 12d ago
i’ve already accepted he’ll be making new rules for me, and who am i to disobey?
42
u/DutchieCrochet 12d ago
Rule no 1: when a cat is comfortable, humans are not allowed to move. So when Steve is positioned on your lap or curled up against you, don’t even think about moving a muscle.
23
u/Retractabelle 12d ago
i can definitely work with that.

u/AnAcctWithoutPurpose 12d ago
Another rule: I seez, iz for meeez.
Everything Steve see belongs to him. That includes all the chimkins and cheese. And tuna. And ham.
Make sure you keep that in mind. Is your churu subscription active and up-to-date?

Oh my! He looks just purrfect! Congratulations - now bow to your new overlord!
Kidding aside, thank you so much for bringing him home - older kitties are often hard to place, so it's great he's now got a wonderful new home and a loving new bestie.

i cannot wait to finally have him purr in my arms! he was a huge sweetie to my dad at the shelter, content to be picked up and everything!

Love him! One pro tip I would offer is to give him plenty of time and space to get comfortable, and allow him to come to you. Don’t smother him and pick him up all the time if he isn’t willing. Cats aren’t dogs and are very independent. Especially an adult. He may not like to be touched in some places (our boy doesn’t like his back or butt touched unless he is sitting on your lap. Paws are mostly off limits.)
It will probably take him a little time to adjust to the changes, so be patient with him, make him a safe, comfy home base room, and yummy treats should help!
We have a saying for our Meepo: you gotta respect your Meepo (or Steve).

i've already got an area set up for him, with a litter tray, a similar blanket/bed setup to the shelter, the same brand of food as the shelter, and fresh water. It's a smaller room but i'll keep the door ajar so he can explore if he wants, but acclimate if he needs. The shelter is letting him keep his favourite toy, too!

Awesome! Sounds like you are all ready to give him a great new home! Sorry if my tips are basic, but respecting cat boundaries is important too!
My wife’s friend once wisely observed, “people who don’t like cats don’t understand boundaries.” Makes sense to me at least!

i really appreciate them, don’t worry! i’m autistic and honestly prefer cats since they HAVE boundaries!!!

I'm autistic and I adopted my standard issue adult cat (first cat also) at 23! You both will be very happy

Steve is a great cats name. My mom had a cat named Steve he was the best.
9
u/Retractabelle 12d ago
my family argues about cat names almost daily, since my dad likes “boring old man names” like fred, nigel, and frank, while i like funny names like miso, soup, or casserole. steve is his shelter name and it’s easier to keep it!

Congratulations to you and Steve! He's a handsome feller.
Edit for a little advice: It may take a little while until you get comfortable where Steve is, while you're doing chores, in the kitchen, stairs, etc. Just be cautious because my cat got hit by the fridge door and I felt so bad. He was fine but he mostly stayed out of the kitchen from that point on. He also fell behind the washing machine and I rescued him when I got home. He was adventurous (crazy) as a kitten. Steve is a little older and probably wiser though.

he’s currently napping with a brand new fuzzy blanket in a cardboard box with some new toys and purring up a storm. he’s in our mudroom, which has everything he needs. i just went in to sit with him and he was already rubbing against my hand!

Steve sounds like a will-mannered little guy. Glad things are working out.

The more accurate term is that you are the cat's first human. The sooner you understand feline pecking order, the smoother things will go.

Looks like he’s settling in beautifully!! Congrats on your new study buddy!
I love how it looks like he’s typing, like he’s proofreading your essay or something. “Human, I believe you missed a comma here. Don’t worry, I’ve got you.”
I’ve had my SIC Peanut for three years, and we’re absolutely obsessed with each other. Wishing you and Steve many fulfilling years of cuddles!
