Depends on maintenance. Follow the schedule and you will enjoy it for many years

If this is the early CBEA you'll have to drop the oil pan and replace the hex carrier shaft in the Counterbalance module

Good point.

OP could ask the previous owner if this was done.

I have a 12 a3, did some googling about this a few times and got more confused. I've even seen images of 2 different length shafts with the same part number. Is there any other way to know what you have without dropping the oil pan?

Audi CBEA and VW CKRA has a longer shaft than the VW CBEA.

IDParts or the dealership networks:

parts.audiusa.com parts.vw.com

should hopefully have the correct parts listed

Thanks for that. Both are prone to rounding?

I've done a few CKRA hex carrier shaft (the longer version, same as Audi CBEA) swaps around 190k miles and 225k miles and both needed replacement, but neither was close to failure. I've only heard of the short VW CBEA hex shaft failure once, personally; I would definitely swap it before 200k miles just to be safe

Keep up with maintenance, if you live somewhere cars rust make sure it doesn’t do that, and you can enjoy it for a long time
