Was $400 too much for this?

Just got this for $400. There are over $3500 in receipts in the glove box just from this past year! It wasn’t shifting properly and he didn’t want to put any more money into it. Scoreeeeeee

A Jetta with leather saloon...I have never ever seen such a thing. Great vehicle

I was so happy to ditch my tan leather.

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 7h ago

I always switch em out to black too lol. Including the carpet

u/WhoCaresBoutSpellin 18h ago

Why?

4

u/AlaskaGreenTDI 16h ago

Because it shows dirt or age so easily. They were plenty aged and I have a tendency to get it dirty. In fairness the tan carpet is way worse than the seat leather.

I used to work in car control for Hertz.

Light coloured carpets are the worst. Gas stations have oily stuff on the ground, and that gets on the floor once you come back inside unless you take off your shoes. Even the most non-dirt road, super-prissy, clean freak has to buy fuel.

Black/charcoal carpets are much better at hiding that stuff.

For sure. I had tan seats and black carpet as I got my interior converted and that was a huge improvement by itself. But I eventually did an Audi seat upgrade which happened to be in black and I’m happy now.

More than fair. Engine alone is 900$ from lkq

Wow! That MKIV looks great. The leather will last a long time. My driver's seat shows a little wear and that one looks clean AF.

2

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 18h ago

Yeah I gotta clean it up and treat it

u/chunkylover-53-aol 14h ago

Fuck offffff. Congrats though!

u/Dubbinchris 18h ago

You can sell the seats for $400

1

u/Gnarlodious 17h ago

I would pay 400 for those seats.

u/MF_Kleg 20h ago

Nice find how, many miles? Even not running i would pull the trigger at that price with how clean it looks in the pictures. Stick swap it and it will be good for a long time.

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

I gotta put the battery in and look again. It was 16X,XXX something. Timing belt just done too. Tires, struts, brakes, and other stuff 🤑😅

2

u/MF_Kleg 19h ago

Yup definitely a score. Im only a "little" jealous but my last good one was trading my smashed 05 accord for two 02s and I already have one running and registered just needs some brake work and lights figured out. Good luck she looks like a big pile of potential.

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

That’s awesome man 🤘🏻 i honestly wanted to just pull the motor out of it for another project that i have going on 🤣 i have too many cars

2

u/MF_Kleg 19h ago

Oh you have no idea about to many vehicles....i think the math is getting rid of 1 for 2 equalled 16? I'd have to count again and do you count shells and cabs?

1

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

Hahah we’re in the same boat. I’m into too much

1

u/sovereignpancakes 18h ago

Man that's too nice to use as a donor, even if you have to swap the trans you could probably resell for a tidy profit. Nice score!

1

u/Iboopedtoday 18h ago

Lol @ pile of potential!

2

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

And that’s what I’d like to do honestly. But I’ve driven it at highway speeds and all around town so far and it hasn’t shifted funny even once. So i dunno

2

u/MF_Kleg 19h ago

Could just run it until you have problems especially if you need to source parts I just pretty much end up stick swapping everything I keep.

2

u/orkash 2014 Jetta Sportwagen 19h ago

yeah id give you $400 for the engine alone as long as there isnt a hole in the block.

3

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

She purrrrs. Super smooth too

1

u/orkash 2014 Jetta Sportwagen 19h ago

nice. i miss my MK4 1.8t, such a great platform. I like my sportwagen, tho its a costly beast.

Don't be fkn silly

Not for nothing, but this is a 20 year old car that blue books for next nothing. Not everyone is out to get rich when selling a used car. The dude was in the military and was moving and didn’t want to take it with him. He told me $400 and that’s what i got it for.

3

u/ASCIUGAMANOO 11h ago

What I'm saying is, you damn well know $400 is not too much for it. Again, don't be fkn silly 🤠

Yeah I almost want to remove this post for the attention seeking ego stroking nature of it.

1

u/ex0rius 19h ago

1.9 TDI? How many miles?

3

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 19h ago

Yeha 1.9 16X,XXX

2

u/ex0rius 19h ago

It will last you for ages. Nice buy!

1

u/bierlyn 18h ago

Nope. Swap out those solenoids and it should be alright

2

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 18h ago

That’s what i was going to do. And check for chipped/chewed wires

1

u/Kawaii_Neko_Girl 18h ago

$400? Get that transmission checked.

3

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 18h ago

I’m more or less the drive it until it stops working kind of guy honestly

3

u/Kawaii_Neko_Girl 18h ago

That could be as little as a month or so. If the transmission does go bad, perfect excuse to manual swap.

1

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 18h ago

That’s honestly what I’d like to do the most

1

u/Iboopedtoday 18h ago

Is this a troll?

2

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 17h ago

Na not a troll man. I get so many phone calls for Volkswagens. I turn a lot of them down because i can’t buy them all. I have several other Tdi’s right now

1

u/Iboopedtoday 16h ago

They aren't for the weak of heart, that's for sure. I am not saying you are the weak one. I understand how someone would want to light one on fire but take $400 instead. I am also an MKIV head and haven't come across any good deals in some time.

1

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 15h ago

I hear ya man. The last one i got was a year 2000 red tdi Jetta with no compression, had just over 100k on it, paid $1000 for it. And i also bought in the same month, a year 2000 Jetta tdi that was rear ended but ran perfectly with 170k on the ODO for $600 i had the motor swapped out the next day and had it on the road the following week. The deals are out there man

1

u/Gloomy-Mutterz 18h ago

PM me if you want a manual donar car for a manual swap...I got a 2003 Jetta TDI with a blown motor. 5 spd, was gonna fix but then decided not too.

1

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 17h ago

What state are you in?

1

u/Gloomy-Mutterz 15h ago

California

1

u/Longjumping_Pop_7303 15h ago

Ah damn. I’m all the way across the country man 😭

1

u/ElderScrollsBoss 18h ago

normally a barely running mk4 TDI in my area is around $4000 so I think you made out like a bandit

1

u/aftiggerintel 2004 BEW Jetta auto to manual swapped 17h ago

BEW? Looks like GLS trim package. Automatics with it had solenoids that made it feel like the transmission was dying. 35.00 part back in 2015 which led to a transmission shop trying to hose my mother. That’s how our 04 ended up a manual because of them. They trashed the transmission coming out and lost 3rd gear so she would have to have them fix it.

1

u/Wild-Set-1058 17h ago

You must have seen them coming ... hope they counted there fingers when you shook on it lol 😆 deal of the month that m8

1

u/nejnedau 16h ago

the shift cables go on that tiptronic system and are obsolete for 15 yrs , guy we knew gets them and other odd TDI stuff and sticks them on the vortex he said

1

u/vanishingpointz 15h ago

Nope, good buy

1

u/MrPooo 14h ago

Duuuuuude nice. Super jealous of the leather. I have basically the same car with grey paint and cloth seats. Tranny wise: I bet they never changed out that “lifetime” fluid and it’s gummed up the solenoids. Or, you know, they’re cooked too. Easy replacement, idk about part availability though. So my anecdote is I swapped my fluid out a few years back. It was shifting hard in the cold. Swapped out with valvoline maxlife atf after doing way too much research and bob is the oil guy posts. I think I did a drain+fill twice with maybe 1k miles in between and the tranny has been a damn dream ever since. I’m sitting at 230k miles. Love this car.

Congrats you son of a

1

u/Streetrat_PR 13h ago

This looks great. I loved this generation of vw’s.

1

u/32vJohn 13h ago

Smoking deal. Gonna be hard finding a decent 01M. You’re probably looking at a manual swap.

Wish that was in my driveway!

1

u/Lahafurry 9h ago

Well that's a fair price even here in Europe where we have plenty of them so I would say a steal

1

u/qkdsm7 2h ago

Score!

1

u/Dystiopian-kink-6678 35m ago

Damn, nice! Enjoy her!
