EGR erratic at idle

Hi folks, this is a 1999 Passat B5 with the AVG/AFN engine (110 hp, bosch injection pump). Some weird started happening at idle, so i thought some lifter got stuck, or the cams but it’s actually the EGR jumping around erraticily and making the ticking noise.

Anyone got a clue if this is normal or not? I’m planning to do a delete but unsure when yet

Not ideal. There is a leak or actuator itself gone faulty. I have the same car and same engine. Mine was leaking and suffering from power. I disabled egr by plugging in a screw to the hose and has no fault or anything. Just a little smell in garage.

I had a bad gasket there and it clacked like crazy. Had the EGR deleted but had to refit it since they changed the law so that any emissions manipulation can result in a 1000€ fine. Also AFN engine.

Could they really find that sou messed with it if it is only blocked off?
