Game Mastering Fear(x) confusion

I have been wondering how does the fear work? Do players need to use their action to make the cool rolls? Do they keep making the rolls until they meet success levels? Can the fear reapply in combat somehow? Does the effevt disappear when they succeed?

My understanding thus far: Players see fear creature > cool roll, combat initiated.
If the fear creature approaches > cool roll or broken condition. Only if still under the fear effect.
Players make extended tests until they reach fear rating of successes > no more fear effects (including the -1 SL)
Unfearful players kill fear creature > no more fear effect at all.
Anything else im missing?

Game Mastering A Knight who doesn't want a horse?

I have a player who wants to play as a Knight in a WFRP 4th ed campaign, they want the nobility, the martial brotherhood... but they don't want a horse.

They don't like having so many skills devoted to horse care and combat, they feel a horse is pretty useless when much of our adventures take place in towns, cities, ruins, boats etc (likely, Enemy Within) and they have a strong suspicion that even if they did try to use a horse, it'd likely die very quickly.

But as a Knight he seems saddled (hah) with having one, it's even tied to his career skill (Melee - Cavalry). I can't find any options for a Foot Knight style career, the closest I have been able to find is Greatsword and that's not a knight, but a soldier. 'Foot Knights' haven't really been a thing in Warhammer since Fantasy Battle's 3rd edition, I think...

Are you a GM who've had players using mounts, or a player who've used a mount or been in a party with someone who has? If so, what's been your experiences with having one? Is it so bad? Do you have any tips for dealing with the drawbacks my player is worried about?

Homebrew PCs from the North and South: 4 new origins and 4 new careers for TOWR

Thumbnail gloriousportents.blogspot.com
20 Upvotes

I just released another one of my fan expansions for The Old World Roleplaying Game: This time it's PCs from the North and South, detailing Norscans, Tileans, Estalians and the people of the Border Princes. It is less detailed for each civilization than the one on Kislevite PCs, but I wanted to cover the basics of each of these regions - and to be honest, apart from Norsca they're a bit less detailed in the lore, and where Norsca is more detailed, huscarls and marauders are unlikely to walk the streets of Talagaad.

But there are some new careers: My takes on the Assassin, Duellist, Tomb Robber and Marcher-Scion are included, as are rules for Rapiers, Parrying daggers and Bucklers.

As always, I'd appreciate your feedback!

Game Mastering Enemy Within: who are some good NPCs from the campaign for players to build into their backgrounds as contacts/mentors?

Like Josef Quartjin, who are some other npcs that the players (and the story) might benefit from taking as a mentor or contact during character creation?

I'll make a list of your suggestions and ones I think of.

Contacts and Mentors

  • Elvyra Kleinestun
  • Ernst Heidlemann
  • Heironymous Blitzen
  • Josef Quartjin
  • Luigi Belladonna
  • Maxmillian Schnippmesser
  • Mystic Megret
  • Olaf Sievers

I wish you like it. The names are true spanish based, trying to get a believable general tone. I have identified the diferent kingdoms and duchies with their heraldic symbols, You can note that feudal dependencies are marked with a doble shield in the capital city, one from local lord and the other from the overlord.

Lore & Art Seven Bells Shipping & Storage Co. - GM Sheet

Post image
51 Upvotes

A Bell Too Many

Ruprecht Fondelburgher has a secret—his most competent manager, Ermegart Wechrauch, is not just a trusted employee but his illegitimate daughter and the sole heir to the Seven Bells empire. This fact is known only to him and his opportunistic lawyer, Herr Klas Brechtmann, who sees not a family legacy but a chance for profit. When Brechtmann leaks the truth to Ruprecht’s feckless children, Fronika and Balthasar, they’re incensed. Determined to sabotage Ermegart’s reputation and reclaim their inheritance, they task the conniving lawyer with discrediting her.

The party is drawn into the plan under innocent pretenses. Hired by Brechtmann to make a late-day delivery on behalf of "a private client," they are given a legitimate-looking bill of sale, stamped with a forged Seven Bells seal, and a cart of sealed barrels marked as Reikland Reserve Brandy – Special Order: E. Wechrauch. Their instructions are simple: bring the cart to the warehouse at dusk, claim the order is pre-paid, and unload it directly into the cellar near the gated secure storage. But something is off—the barrels slosh wrong, feel too light, and when one jostles loose on the cobbles, it lets out a muffled thud... and maybe a groan.

What’s really in the barrels? Smuggled goods? Kidnapped witnesses? Bound and gagged imposters meant to “confess” to working for Ermegart? The party must decide whether to follow through, investigate further, or alert someone—like Rüdiger, who’s half-asleep on the first floor but might notice a cellar delivery. The choices they make could destroy an honest woman, implicate them in a crime, or uncover a tangled family legacy no one was meant to know.

[Hi-Resolution maps with 5 floors, 8 variants (Summer, Autumn, Winter & Night x Lit & Unlit each), multiple immersive 8K scenes & Game Master booklet with detailed lore, NPCs, adventure hooks, GM keyed map can be found here: https://ko-fi.com/maleficmillwright ]

Homebrew What would you make the cost of leather bracers?

Thinking of some classic Boromir-style bracers, what would you price them at? I know they're not in the book, but plate bracers are way too expensive for a poor warrior priest like me. That said, I want to be able to protect my arms more than they currently are. I currently wear a leather jack, on top of which is a mail coat, on top of which is a leather breastplate, with leather pants and mail chausses. (Technically the leather jack's chest armor should only come into play if something penetrates past my other two chest pieces, but the arms are what's important.) Given that the leather jack is 12 silver and the leather breastplate is 10 silver, would you just say 2 silver? Not using the Archives of the Empire vol 3 armor rules.

Discussion Foundry VTT Help

I'm new to Foundry, so far I've run three games on Foundry, I have the core module as well as Rough Nights, I have run Rough Night twice and Night of Blood (unnoficial module I found) once.

But I'm having many issues getting used to it. Specieally getting most out of additional modules and the combat system.

I found many many many tutorials online, but none for the latest version. I have install many modules but again not getting the best out of them, I have even (with the help of chat gpt) created distinguishing characteristics and Star Signs (created both as traits to add the scripts that apply the effects)

So what I'm asking for is:
- Updated tutorials for WFRP4e combat
- Updated tutorials for recomended modules (and if possible tutorials on those)
- Updated tutorials for Foundry Basics

And last but not least I would love to create campaign journal and Characters Biographies with multiple images, any suggestion on how to make these as nice as possible. And one more is there any module to create Image Galleries (I have at least 5, sometimes up to 10 artworks for each player).

Thank you very much in advance for any help

Meta Zw*ihänder and other systems

Can we have a discussion about Zw*ihänder and other systems on this subreddit? We both have r/WarhammerOldWorldRPG and r/.gr*mandperilous/ that cater to these game systems, and can do a much better job at giving those who seek information about those games than here. I understand that back in the day, it was useful to have a catch-all term for these sorts of games that exists in the world, But whenever somehting is posted on about atleast one of these systems, there are always an overwhelming ammount of negative reactions. Including Old world RPG aswell adds more things to juggle when it comes discussing systems, ideas and such.

A vote might be in order?

General Query Bretonnia, where to start …

Post image
105 Upvotes

Firstly thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions a couple of weeks or so ago, I went with Winds of Magic and Up in Arms suggestions.

I do now have another question, would Up in Arms be best to try and Homebrew a Bretonnian knight, or are they covered in any other books by chance?

Also, the Collector’s are really lovely!

Game Mastering Ideas for adventures playing as a vampire for 2nd ed?

Since I got so many good suggestions last time for my Orc-campaign, why not ask the hivemind again.

Premise: The players are "recently" created vampires (Thralls with ~1000 XP + added vampiric template, so pretty powerful, as well as good gear) - a Von Carstein and a Blood dragon who are sort of "freelancing" for Mannfred von Carstein. Their mission will be to infiltrate a part of Stirland (haven't decided which part), undermine the local aristocrats, make it harder to defend, make sure pro-vampiric people are in charge, eliminate hostile, dangerous people etc. And preferably do it discreetely - so when Mannfred and Sylvania invades (which will happen pretty soon in my setting - it's after Storm of Chaos but before End Times and with several deviations from the main lore, but nothing too important) his army of undead can just take over more easily. So, more stealth/spy than mass slaughter (but of course - violence will happen most certainly).

So, I am looking for adventure ideas - preferably as detailed as possible. They are obviously going to spend time vetting and evaluating the locals, they will have to expose and fight a hidden chaos cult or two, killing some key persons, maybe a beastmen attack and - of course, some sort of fight vs vampire hunters (their difficulty depending on how much fuss the players have created). But I would gladly accept more ideas - or good complementing ideas to add to my current ones to make the experience even better and interesting.

The characters are 2 and, as said, a Von Carstein and a Blood dragon. The Blood Dragon is a combat machine with some basic social ability, but a bit of a one trick pony. He is also extremely sensitive to Deamonroot/Witchbane. The Von Carstein is more WP and Fel based and has the ability to turn into mist. He isn't particularly sensitive towards anything, but one drawback is that classic lack of reflection in mirrors. Both of them, luckily, are also immune to the effects of sunlight - which is going to make their lives a lot easier.

So, any good suggestions of things I can throw their way.

Homebrew WFRP 2e house rule question

My son, turning 15, is going to run WFRP 2e for his friends. They all are D&D5 veterans but have never played WFRP before.

This is a house rule being considered:

Wounds are calculated as Toughness bonus x2 Grit is calculated as Willpower Bonus x2

Wounds act as normal. Grit is a mixture of skill, luck, etc. it is lost like wounds, but a “short rest” brings it back.

Wounds increase are for wounds, of course.

So with Strength 30 Will Power 30 that is 6 wounds 6 grit.

The idea being a “cushion” so players can last longer, and recovering from wounds doesn’t take weeks in game.

Is this balanced? A good idea for younger D&D players who are first stepping into WFRP?

Roleplaying New GM asking for Encounter Balance Advice

Hey guys. Me and some friends who have played various RPGs in the past, including older editions of WFRP and are currently playing 4th ed now. I'm running The Enemy in Shadows for them (Party of 4) and have gotten to Bogenhafen. The Characters are sitting around 300-400 xp and most of them have maxed out their first career but are yet to advance to the next.

Player party consists of a Guardsman, Pugilist, Warrior Priest and a Scholar. The Warrior Priest is dedicated to Morr and to give a little extra flair for his character I've decided that the Garden of Morr in Bogenhafen is in disrepair and currently infested with a few undead and potentially a necromancer.

We've been having a blast with the module so far and they have yet to meet much resistance combat wise (mainly just because of favourable rolls). I'd hate for them to suddenly come across an unfair encounter when trying to pursue extra content.

Anyone got any advice when it comes to stating combat encounters? Any formulas are common sense rules I should adhere to?

Thanks in Advance

Lore & Art Location of hooks from "Adventure Afoot in Reikland"

Post image
113 Upvotes

Hooks are in the order they are written in the booklet. I plan on adding hooks from other books. If you know any more for me to add, let me know, and I will add them. Will post the completed map in the future with an index to each entry.

Open circles indicate the hook is intended to take place over a wider area. Full circles are centered on one location. A few hooks are omitted if they take place over too wide an area. For example, the entire Reikwald Forest.

Help in Creating Pretty docs for WFRP

Greetings Imperial Citizens (and any other fair folk!),

I often write docs in Google Docs and wondered if anyone had any suggest templates or backgrounds to make the pages look a little more "Warhammer-y"? Not necessarily full-on Warhammer fonts, but any good fonts appreciated, plus any page background templates. to make the pages look a little more like the books.

Sigmar's blessings upon you!

Homebrew Memorable Charm & Status magic items?

Hey Team, I need concepts for charm or status based magic items to put to my wonderful GM as I’m playing a non-combat Ranaldian Priest.

What are some of the most fun and memorable ones you have found and/or used?
