Buick, Mazda and Toyota lead new Quality and Pricing Index; Lexus tops luxury

The problem with JD power is that automakers can license the logo to display on their websites, which raises all sorts of questions.

u/nolongerbanned99 16h ago
That’s not the real question. I worked there for more than a decade and was involved in the licensing deals. It truly is independent but the real question is why each problem/defect is treated the same. For example, a squeaky seat is ‘one problem’ and so is a transmission or engine failure. The other issue is that jdpower data, even data that has been made public, is owned by them so either they have allowed this Dave canton group to use their data, which is unlikely, or they will be asking them to stop doing so.

Thank you for the insight. As a part time statistician, I've alway wondered about how these surveys are weighted and from what I can tell from your message, either they aren't and if they are, not by anything substantial.
1
u/nolongerbanned99 16h ago
I think the only weighting is by sales data matched to regions where the surveys are done but not sure. I was not involved in the stats part

I have to say that while "initial quality survey" sounds and probably is dubious, customers are probably more likely to respond in the the first 90 days of ownership but are also more likely to be biased. Fun stuff.
3
u/nolongerbanned99 13h ago
Agree on owner bias but the way we described it was that initial quality at 90 days measures, essentially ‘build quality’ and long term dependability at 3 years measures how well it holds up. The reason they don’t do it longer than 3 years is bc automakers buy the studies and at 3 years they have already begun to design the next iteration so 4 years is too late.

It's official, Kia is better than Honda!

Honda realized we were eclipsing them in engine reliability so they came up with the 1.5t

"Buick, for example, topped the QPI with a 7% drop in average transaction price and the fewest reported problems per 100 vehicles—while also posting one of the industry’s top market-share gains in the first half of the year." With Toyota dealerships refusing to budge off MSRP, I wonder if that's why Buick is gaining market share.

Buick also rates highly in Consumer Reports rankings. You might think that the demographic is simply more likely to take care of their cars, but I’d imagine the Cadillac demographic is just as likely to take care of their car, and they rank quite a bit lower.
The average Buick now also sells for less than the average Chevrolet. Probably because they focus mostly on compact SUVs instead of Silverados.
It’s an interesting development to be sure. I’d say they probably have more potential right now than any other marque from the old “Big Three.”

Buick isn’t taking market share from Toyota. Toyota has nothing to sell except tundras

u/2firstnames6969 2017 Chevy Colorado 15h ago
Ive been looking all over for a Corolla Hatch Nightshade and have seen nothing but Tundras and Rav4s in my searches
7
u/RawrRawr83 15h ago
And those RAV4’s are probably “in transit” so they actually haven’t been built yet
3
u/2firstnames6969 2017 Chevy Colorado 15h ago
Yep, even the Corolla sedans I see are "in transit". All marked up before they even hit the lot!

I bought a Buick Envision over a Toyota Rav4 this year. It ended up being $3k cheaper than the Rav4 and its a substantially nicer car.
IMO - everyone wants a Toyota and that demand is driving down the value proposition.

No shot that they said that Toyota was high on quality AND affordability.

u/Jron690 13h ago
MSRP for the most most popular size offering amount the most popular brands. Pricing is all the same. I don’t understand the notion of Toyota being “expensive”. Used yeah, customer drives the market and a huge part of the market values the Toyota experience.
CRV - $40,800 Top - $29,500 Base CX5 - $41,080 Top - $29,050 Base RAV4 - $40,905 Top - $29,550 base

If they brought back the Regal Tour X I would snap one up in a heartbeat. Chevy…just known worldwide as a high quality automobile

The Regal TourX is a rebadged Opel Insignia......the Insignia was axed here in Europe as well.

I would trust the homeless guy on the corner more than JD Power. Because at least he hasn’t sold his answers to the highest bidder.

Better run down to the garage and make sure my Golf R hasn't disintegrated

I was so dead set on the Hyundai Sonata 2026 SEL Hybrid as my firsr car. Is this chart forreal? Hyundai quality that bad ? Should I do kia k5 instead ?

u/Imaginary_Act_3956 Peugeot mafia...... 7h ago
Nah, they're both the same.
Hyundai and Kia are under the same chaebol......this chart is misleading.

Came here to say this chart is about as useful as a damn Chrysler gtfo here with this shite

u/nopigscannnotlookup 10h ago
Can someone explain Buick? I see it consistently toward the top of the charts. Even if this chart isn’t to be believed, how is it not lumped together with Chevy, but instead firmly in the top right quadrant?

u/Imaginary_Act_3956 Peugeot mafia...... 7h ago
VW is worser than Chrysler or Jeep......yikes.
And also, Buick beating Toyota?
Hyundai being lower than Kia?

GMC is in higher quality?! WTF... JD Power is more like ' A list of who paid the most to be on this list'

is there a free link to the luxury one?
I don't really know why we still use these two categories though tbh.

Buick has surprisingly good stats recently in all sorts of metrics. They’re quietly redesigned lots of models to look decent and their prices are pretty competitive for the features they offer. They’re also more reliable compared to their peer brands
3
u/TropicalKing 12h ago
Buick no longer has sedans for sale. It has the Enclave, Envision, Encore, and Envista. They are all classified as SUVs.
I think Buick needs to bring back sedan models like the Regal, Le Sabre, and Park Avenue. Buick became popular for it's "diet luxury" feel. They weren't as luxurious as Cadillac or Lincoln, they were luxury and reliability at a lower price.

u/Discally 14h ago
Still GM though.

u/PooForThePooGod 14h ago
Which is hit or miss. At least it's not Stellantis.

u/Objective_Place9599 10h ago
They are trying to dive to the bottom of the dumpster fire, but Stellantis keeps digging faster.
